Emack and Bolio’s

Omg. This place is the bees knees! Such good quality ice cream. So much better than jp licks or cold stones. I got the mudslide in a waffle cone (chocolate ice cream with oreo cookies and chocolate chips) and ir was incredible! So creamy and delicious. What could be even better? The ice cream scooper dude was cute and hell and truly loved talking about ice cream. I might just propose to him the next time i see him.

UPDATE: Had a scoop of cookie dough ice cream sans freezer burn – good quality dough and a large scoop, but still not worth $ 4.49!

This is literally the best Ice Cream I have ever had in my life. The cashiers are funny and friendly. Local and all-​time fave for 3 years and counting!

so here;s the update;
Ok, went again tonight for a Hot Fudge Sundae and «lo & behold» same old story,
I order a regular sunday and the regular response;
«WE HAVE NO WHIPPED CREAM TONIGHT»!
Come on manager/​owner, please get your act together and start caring about your customer base. Do you just not give a damn that this is the 6^th time I have been here with no whipped cream? I know the rest of the world, the government is going crazy, but could we just have our whipped cream for our Sundaes?
How hard is it to go to Shaws, a block away, and buy 20 cans of whipped cream to last a couple of weeks. We don’t care if it’s canned, granted we like the fresh cream better but will settle for the canned. A Hot Fudge Sundae is just not a Sundae without Whipped Cream.
OH, AND IT WOULD BEHOOVE YOU TO CLEAN THE PLACE UP ONCE A WEEK,
ESPECIALLY THE TRASH CAN? UGHH!!! DISGUSTING!!!
It is a good thing you have great ice cream & hot fudge, because methinks you’d be closed if not!!!

Ok, honestly, the service was 5 Stars, but the ice cream and dessert was just ok in my humble opinion.
Several of us came in (a group of 7) on a Sunday night. I got the Cosmic Crunch in a cup. The caramel swirl was way too sweet for me. I also got a peanut butter cup. While it was definitely homemade, it wasn’t what I expected either. The peanut butter inside seemed a little dryer than expected and didn’t quite hit the spot.
My friends were very happy with their choices, but maybe I’m being a bit picky since I had Christina’s ice cream earlier in the day. (yes, dessert TWICE in the same day… and no, I’m not defending myself!)
The server was EXCELLENT. He humored us and answered a lot of questions and was even kind enough to take our picture. =)
If I get the chance to come back, I think I’ll try a simpler flavor so I won’t be so overwhelmed.

I went here the other night with my roommates when we were all had a serious hankering for ice cream. I will say that their frozen yogurt is really very delicious, I had the grasshopper something or other and their portions are pretty big and priced fairly well. The only thing about this location that I noticed is the employees are really not the most friendly and they seem to be a little high. They are slow, less than engaging, and barely speak to you or look at you; not the best for customer service, but their froyo is good so I’ll be back for more!

It was 93 degrees when we visited Emack and Bolio’s for the first time. Frankly, it’s pretty hard to complain about any frozen treat on a mercurial afternoon in July. While we were very happy with our cosmic crunch and grashopper pie cones, the service was not fantastic and the place felt kind of dirty. It was a very hot day, but still it’s a little gross when the guy scooping your ice cream wipes the sweat off of his brow with his bare hands and then proceeds to handle your ice cream cone.

I had a root beer float here – the ice cream was a properly-​sized scoop hung off the edge of the cup, which was filled with microbrewed root beer, specifically, E&B’s Rock It Root Beer. A house brand of root beer – how could this not be awesome?
As it turned out, the root beer float hit the spot, and an awesome dessert had capped off an awesome dinner.

Good homemade ice cream, little bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Nice variety of flavors, some specialty flavors also. One of my favorite items is the raspberry lime rickey. They are one of a select few places that still make this delicious and refreshing drink. I will try the Coolidge Corner store soon since its closer to my home.

Holy crap I love this place! I think I’ve had every ice cream on their menu! :D And I practically LIVED on their extra thick frappes during my last breakup. It’s so conveniently located, the price is right, the service is fantastic, the biggest crowd is never more than 10 people, and their hours are great!
PLUS they have all kinds of goodies now! Hot chocolate (which I tried this past February — yum!), candies, and soft serve. They are *in fact* open during the winter too. I’ve certainly been known to grab a cone on the freezing cold days of January and savor it to strange looks as I walk down the street. :)
Great for an after-​dinner snack, family friendly, and a good place to take friends from out of town. I feel like it’s one of Washington Square’s best keep secrets so I hate to divulge, but I REALLY like this place, love the people working there, and totally support it.
And I love their colorful murals inside too. :)

OK, I need an update
Today was my first day back to Emack and Bolio’s since I fully accepted my soy allergy. I passed Emack’s on my way back from the grocery store tonight.
Tonight was also my first grocery store trip with full acceptance of my soy allergy. It took, like, 5 times as long because I had to look at every single label for things that I’ve loved for decades.
I almost cried in the middle of the store. No more chocolate. No more [store-​bought] ice cream (especially the kinds with chocolate in them). I felt like I learned Santa was fake all over again. Ice cream, along with coffee, bourbon, and boys with tattoos, is one of my big vices that make life worth living. I know I could make it myself… but the best kind has little chocolate nibs in it. Sad.
So, as I exited the store absolutely crestfallen and defeated, my passing Emack’s actually lit a lightbulb in my head. Sure, my favorite flavors that I previously reviewed are wrought with crap I cannot eat. However, it won’t be as delicious, but I bet that the sorbet was safe. Upon questioning the young man behind the counter, who actually took the time to check in his binder, my suspicion was confirmed. Lemon sorbet was a-​ok.
Watching him scoop it didn’t fill me with much excitement. I honestly had low expectations for it as a substitute. I feared that it would only mildly fill a large void… like when my college sweetheart broke up with me and I started sleeping with my lab partner from my physics class to, ahem, get by. I feared it would only kinda help.
I was wrong. That lemon sorbet is so light and refreshing. REFRESHING. Dairy products don’t really feel refreshing on a hot day. Sorbets, however, are both filling and quenching. I almost didn’t miss the ice cream. Epic win. Thank goodness too… because if it really did parallel my physics partner, it wouldn’t end well.
So, when I am not forcing myself to make my own ice cream, at least Emack’s sorbets can almost fill a void. It’s also vegan and stuff (if you care).

I love their Dark Purple Cow flavor and their commitment to ‘purity’. I do not love their prices. (Especially their $ 6+ smoothies, which for the most part don’t even have ice cream/​froyo in them. Travesty.)
Emack and Bolio’s is OK, but I like JP Licks better. Although I’m more than willing to give their new (delivery) ice cream pizza a try…

It’s a Meh, but I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt.
We went there after our travesty of American Craft. We got there right before it got slammed. The crime?
I got an extra thick frappé, in the Cosmic Crunch varity. It tasted like cold milk with sugar, and I’m talking about liquid milk, not frozen ice milk.
My girlfriend enjoyed her white pistachio cone.
The reason though I give it 3 stars is that it has a HUGE variety of waffle cones and chocolate. We also got a nuttella cup and a chocolate covered twinkie. That was a travesty too, but that was my fault.
I got the twinkie cause I remember when I lived in New Jersey getting Chocodiles, which are Hostess chocolate covered twinkies. I didn’t eat it right away and put it in the fridge for the next day. The twinkie came out extremely dry. I blame my refridgeration and not Emack and Bolios, cause the same thing happened with my girlfriends Nuttella cup. The dark chocolate I chipped off though was good, a little sweet for dark chocolate, but that could have been from the dried on twinkie too.

You cant go wrong with an ice cream store that has tons of flavors and great customer service, not to mention very generous. I wish i had a bigger freezer to keep more pints. Thanks Emacks.

Dessert heaven. Best (and one of only a few) places to get a proper chocolate malt in Boston.

My roommate and I happened to stumble upon Emack and Bolio’s when we went for a walk just when we didn’t think we could handle the copious amounts of homework that being a grad student entails. I got the seasonal pumpkin ice cream and my roommate had something with peanut butter and chocolate. I may be a it biased because I feel nothing pumpkin can ever be bad but this ice cream is SO good… so creamy. Personally, anything that makes us smiley and giggly despite our homework haze is a-​okay in my book.

I like my ice cream unique. I live to have random flavors, random toppings and sometimes create random messes. This place will def give you your fill of variety. They’re a little pricey compared to other places, but the staff is always friendly and they have a interesting selection of waffle cones and ice cream favors.
Go here and never no bored!

I came here after wolfing down a huge plate of fried seafood. It is amazing how eating unhealthy things makes you want more unhealthy things.
The scooper/​cashier was very nice. It was getting close to closing time and she did not pressure me or the rest of my group at all. I ordered one scoop of the dark purple cow. New England is very into black raspberry ice cream, which is my favorite as well. This version had dark and white chocolate chips as well as some pieces of blueberry mixed in. The quality is very good and it wasn’t too sweet or dense. Also, the portion was perfect for me.

I found their ice-​cream delicious and their selection of pastries looked appetizing as well. I had the classic moose tracks and they were very good although I found it to be very expensive and I do have to say that their ice-​cream was too cold and therefore too hard to eat with a plastic spoon. I broke three of them as I attempted to eat the delicious treat and found that a bit annoying.
The flavors were good though and that’s the bottom line that I’m looking for. The staff member was also very friendly.
They also have great shakes apparently which I have yet to try and their selection of cones is impressive. Great stuff!

I don’t know about the other locations but this one is tiny. If there are other people there then it makes it hard to get a good look at the menu but not get in the way of others. The ice cream was ok… Also the addition of a table or something outside might be nice. Kinda cool décor but just ok.
