Elmbrook Humane Society

I applied in March 2015 to adopt Jim from Elmbrook Humane Society. Despite that fact that many people applied to adopt him and trainers stepped forward to provide assistance was killed on 3÷28÷2015. The previous adoption did not go well, yet they refused Jim a second chance. Customer relations are terrible, they pick and choose who to reply to and are rude if you succeed in finding a person to talk., IF you choose to adopt from EBHS and it does not work out, do not return the pet as they will kill it.

I love this humane society. The animals get so much love and care and the staff are very helpful. I adopted a kitty in august after I met her through volunteering. I couldn’t ask for a sweeter kitty. I hope more people realize what a great organization EBHS IS!

Do not adopt here. If you do not take their training classes after you adopt, they will discriminate against you ever adopting again. The director Heather I spoke with on the phone was so rude to me to the point where she asked me what I do for a living. She continued to tell me that my opinion does not matter because I do not have years of experience to match theirs. Their trainer for public/​private classes was named Carol. She was very impatient with my dog, Bambino. She would make me go out of the class because my dog barked too much. You could tell she didn’t want to have anything to do with my dog, which is the reason we chose to not pursue private lessons. (Which are also very expensive!) After almost 9 months of me having my Pitbull Bambino, he has made a complete 360, thanks to me and my expertise.

So disappointed in the staff /​policies at this place. They let another family adopt the pet my children fell in love with, after an approved application and an appt. set up next day to sign papers. My daughter got strep throat and I had to reschedule the appt. for the following morning instead. In spite of my pleas, they wouldn’t ‘hold’ her or take my deposit over the phone. Apparently (found out when I called later in the day) after I hung up with Natalie that morning, someone else called and wanted her and they just approved it and gave our pet to them! (What happened to that 24-​wait period before adoption??) Didn’t even call me to warn me or give me a chance. This shelter has broken my children’s hearts, and they have just lost my future donations, and my future business… awful. All they care about is getting the pets out the door, no regard for you. Shame on you. We found another pet at another shelter that day but we still feel like we lost out. My kids bonded with that kitten over 2 visits prior. Never again.

I am still a big fan of Elmbrook. Since I wrote my original review, they’ve started doing some additional fundraiser events such as regularly scheduled nights of lure coursing. If your dog likes to chase things, definitely try the lure course out (my dog is one that doesn’t quite «get it» and wouldn’t chase the lure even when they coated it with peanut butter, but it was still fun to see the other dogs run the course). Other events that they run include «play dates» at doggie daycares and their annual Wagfest event, which I plan to attend in a few days.
Every time I drop off a donation here, I can’t resist going to look at the animals. They always have a good variety of animals here. It seems like they take a lot of animals from MADACC (the animal control facility here that has a high rate of euthanasia) — I’m very happy that Elmbrook is trying to help these animals get a chance at life. The next time I adopt an animal I plan to look here first.

After taking a whole day and driving around to all the local shelters and humane societies to start looking for a puppy/​younger dog to adopt. After another shelter had no puppies and a third just seemed like a business and not caring about the animals, we were so happy to find Elmbrook Humane Society.
Their facility was clean, and seemed genuinely interested in us and finding a good match for the pets they had. The newest addition to our family came to us with up to date vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed. What a cost savings! They even made sure that our existing dog got along with the dog we were going to adopt. They got to play together outside in a grassy area as well as a smaller caged area.
The adoption cost was comparable or less than other places we looked at and I felt better about giving my money to Elmbrook than other locations.
I was very happy with the experience and if we ever were to adopt a pet again, Elmbrook would be the first place I’d look at! I couldn’t imagine our lives without our girl Molly!

We have 3 cats adopted from EHS. All came home healthy and well taken care of — even our Vet had very positive things to say about animals he’s seen from their shelter. They do ask that you not get your kittens/​cats declawed. Also, they will follow up on the adoption after about three months. Very positive experiences.

After a really bad experience with another shelter, My fiancée and I ended up at Elmbrook Humane Society on the advice of a co-​worker. We were still a little hesitant about getting our hopes up after being so let down by the way St. Francis Society Animal Shelter conducted business, (please read my review of them and pass along the info. to others; they were beyond rude and uncaring) but we have been since rewarded for taking another leap of faith in opening our hearts and giving a forever home to a lost little puppy who was shipped up from a kill shelter in Kentucky. The idea that someone would put this sweet and very cute 4 month year old puppy to sleep is very sad to me, but I know this is the way things must work in some places because of budget constraints and overpopulation. Knowing that Elmbrook Humane Society cares enough to find these animals destined to be put to sleep and spends the money and time it takes to save them and match them with a loving family is heartwarming. We love our little Lillie girl very much and she has already brought us many laughs and happy memories. Thank you Elmbrook and the kind people working there who actually care about not only the animals but the people who are willing to take on such a serious responsibility. I would definitely recommend checking out this animal rescue, or if nothing else, donating to thier wonderful cause. We will adopt from here again when we have a bigger house and yard!
