Joe and I decided to be wild on New Years Eve and… wait for it… drink champagne with actual alcohol in it(while we sat in bed reading comics, watching he-man, and changing the channel to watch the last 15 seconds of the ball drop). Thus I found myself in the tiny L&N Liquor store around 6pm on New Years Eve. The setup is a little annoying to say the least. There is basically a main room, which has no alcohol, and then a U-shaped room(more like hallway) surrounding it. Everything is made out of bulletproof glass. So you walk into the main room, turn right, and find your self in the«U» with all the wine. But like I said, it’s like a hallway, so it gets crowded and annoying fast. Also, note that I said«all the wine,» not all the liquor? Yeah, if you want the hard stuff, you have to go back into the main room and walk toward the other side of the«U.» You can’t go in here, but the employees behind the glass will take your order. This is also where you pay, and that’s where the frustration sets in. There you are, with your credit card and a bottle of $ 8 California«Champagne flavored beverage,» while the person in front of you is basically browsing via employee. «Do you have any big bottles of scotch? Good scotch. How much is that? Oh! That’s too expensive? Do you have good scotch for half that price?» and so on. Equally frustrating: I asked the girl in the wine area if they had smaller bottles of champagne, because seriously, $ 7 of the $ 8 I was spending would probably go down the drain. She said they only had the tiny airplane sizes. But when I got into line, I saw perfect two-person bottles! Of course, by then I had had my share of the crowds and just bought my Korbel and fled the scene. Anyway, the place gets three stars because they were very nice and tried to be helpful. I saw the staff assisting everyone and trying to keep the lines moving efficiently. I’m sure they did the best they could with the layout of the store, and I suppose this is the best way to do it without getting robbed everyday. Happy New Year everyone!
