Bronx High School of Science

It is a great school, and my son just graduated there. But here I won’t say the many things that are good about it, because I suppose most people in NYC know why it is a great school. I’d only like to point out a couple of things that disappoint me about this school and make me give it four instead of five stars. First of all, while most teaching staff and administrators are capable, nice and helpful, some service staff members (i.e., those working in the cafeteria and locker rooms, etc.) are rude to students. My son had some bad experience with them and complained about them quite a few times. Secondly, even though the student population is pretty diversified (About 60% are Asians, and there are also some whites, and fewer Hispanics and African Africans), the students mostly hang out with peers from their own ethnic groups, resulting in some sort of segregation in the school. If there is anything I want to see differently about this school, I’d like to see students from different ethnic groups interact more with one another on a daily basis, not only in class, but out of school as well. I think the school should make an effort to encourage a truly diversified environment where students do not identify themselves primarily by race.

I went there and all 3 of my kids went there. A wonderful amazing place. I love Bronx Science and I get a great feeling each time I see the new generation of ‘Sciencites’

Worked my ass off to get in lol. Made great friends whom I will remember forever. You will miss the experience when it’s all over haha. Just be sure to work hard when you get there because it will help you get into tier one colleges over other schools students which is a far greater educational experience. Aim high

If I could give it no or negative stars, I would. Don’t go there. Let your worst enemy go there, though it’ll probably make he/​she/​it/​them worse.

I had my ups and downs attending this school, but looking back, I wouldn’t have gone anywhere else.
My initial goal was to go to Stuyvesant H.S., as it was widely touted the best school in the city. I scored a few points too short to attend, as did many of my friends, so off to good ol’ BxSci I went.
I’m very, very glad I attended this school. Although there were some amazing teachers here, including two who would come to influence my choice in college major and minor, what makes BxSci special is its students. Yes, they were smart. But more importantly, they were driven, ambitious, and resourceful individuals who made me take a good look at my slacker self and want to do better.
There were people like me, who are a little above average in intelligence and merely skated by. But then there were the people who balanced volleyball, Model UN, drama, and 3 AP classes – all while being relentlessly cheerful and friendly. I guess it could’ve given me an inferiority complex, but having them around me pushed me to do more with what I had, and I’m very grateful for that.
Additionally, my experience at Bronx Science was blessedly drama free. There wasn’t a hierarchy of popularity, or clearly defined «cliques», since we were all pretty much nerds. I did notice that the gregarious, go-​getting white students commanded the most attention, while I and my fellow Asians kept our heads down by never speaking up in class, maintaining good grades, and not participating in any extracurricular activities.
I met my closest and best group of friends at Bronx Science, and even now these are the friendships I maintain rather than the brief friendships I made in college.
However, the administration was terrible when I was there. Some teachers loved their subjects and their students, and enriched their classrooms; others were terrible, ancient teachers who hated students and taught us nothing. A lot of awesome teachers were driven out by Reidy and her loyal band of followers.
I never had encounters with the kids at DeWitt Clinton, although I know someone who was accosted.

I graduated from Bronx Science in the 1960s. It was fundamental to most everything good which happened in my life after that. I agree with Maryann — even 50 years ago, the kids from Clinton were hostile to the kids from Science.
I think that there ought to have been greater emphasis on physical fitness to go along with mental fitness. But overall, I had a world class education in all aspects which prepared me for anything and everything that life has thrown at me.

In most aspects, I am grateful for my education at the Bronx High School of Science. I feel very blessed to have enjoyed the benefits of the competitive environment. To this day, the institution’s strong academic reputation is an asset to my resume. The school absolutely prepares you for college because Bronx Science kids are expected to meet incredibly high standards and deal with great demands.
For all future students, take care to pack ONLY the necessities for school because it’s a really long ride up if you don’t live in the Bronx. Also, I recommend investing in a good computer scanner and lots of folders to stay organized for both academic as well as extracurricular ventures. This might be a little extreme, but retain the number of a reliable car service and carry emergency cab money on hand for safety’s sake.
Like the other reviewers, yes be careful of the students from DeWitt Clinton High School. They were never friendly and often acted in a hostile/​threatening fashion whenever they encountered Bronx Science kids. I can’t tell you how many times we had to deal with their racial slurs (because a majority of the student population come from an Asian-​American background) and hatefulness.

«Science» is one of the specialized high schools in NYC which you have to take an entrance exam to get in even though it’s a free public school and the one I went to for 4 years.
Along with its main rival, Stuyvesant, it’s one of the best schools in the nation having produced more than a handful of Nobel Laureates and countless National Merit Finalists.
D-​train up, hours of classes, lunch and frisbee, hours of classes, snack and frisbee and handball, D– or 4-​train down. Rinse. Repeat.

Wow, the Alma Mater. What can be said about this school that has not already been said? Essentially, despite all the nonsense tat takes place — especially if you are looking for it — attending this school AND GRADUATING, is a serious accomplishment that opens up doors for you later on the road. I cant tell you how many people have been incredibly impressed with the fact that I am a Bronx Science graduate, and it has definitely helped me procure college acceptances and employment opportunities. A wonderful name to add to your resume, Bronx Science may have been some of the best years of my life as well, and I am very fortunate to have attended this wonderful school with all the secret issues nobody talks about unless you know the school.

I remember having to pitch to my parents the benefits of coming to school here. My father was like, «why do you want to go to school in the Bronx again?» My nerd powers prevailed and I took the test and got in.
Coming here was an interesting experience because although there were cliques and hierarchies, everyone was pretty smart and pretty focused on what they wanted to do with themselves. The only thing you had to watch out for were the creeps from DeWitt Clinton coming over and making a ruckus.
I also remember Mr. Krutoy miming a worm on his desk, sitting outside in the hallways between classes listening to music with my bff (we lost touch when I left the country), skipping class in the nurses office and my first HS crush.
The reason why this place get’s an AOK was because the student body opted for using additional funds for a mural in the main lobby instead of renovating the gym and possibly getting a pool. Way to go geekwads.

I have to agree that I had many good memories there. I wouldn’t give five stars only because I do believe that there was more pressure at this school to do well than at any other school.
I just hope my kid is smart enough to get into this place and pass that test.

This experience is based on the mid 90’s
Like all schools there are bad kids and good kids. This school academically is very good and it is also a very competitive school to get into. You must take a test that hundreds of thousands of 8^th or 9^th graders will also take.
The school itself is falling apart. It carries over 60 to 70’s décor and numerous leaks and problems are about. Of the 4 specialized high school this is the second worst one — only Brooklyn Tech is worse — condition wise.
Handball walls are cracked, many play handball on a makeshift wall under a mini bridge. They do have 8 walls to play on. There is a large campus like park to play in about the ¾ size of a football field.
If you stick with the right crowd, you’ll do fine in school. Any school has bad people, but Bronx Science has a majority of kids that have plans for the future already. Most of them know what to do.
The majority of the school’s population is white, then asian (including indians, etc.), then hispanic, and black. You can check their statistics on their website.
*Watch out for the kids from nearby DeWitt Clinton High School — they will mug you near the school, walking to school/​train, and at the train station. I remember a group of black youths from Clinton who followed someone all the way home.
