Guapo’s

Shameful, ridiculous prices for what you get. The fact that this place is still in business is an insult to modestly-​living locals. The management should take a look at their Unilocal page, but they are probably too busy raking in money with their 250% profit food-​scam to do the things people who actually cared about providing food with love would do.

Guapos is still good but it is not nearly as good as it used to be. Smothered now means a teaspoon.
I will still go there off season but I have restarted the hunt for the best Mexican on Cape Cod. Fish tacos are still the best thing on the menu.

Great selection of burritos and tacos. I love the picnic tables outside and the cornhole boards. What I didn’t love is the $ 15 margarita. I understand it was a house-​made fresh one, but it was still pricey.

I guess they are trying to have a Cape Cod twist on Mexican, but it isn’t working. I got a fish burrito and it was basically a fried fish sandwich in a wrap. It’s outrageously priced for what you get — two tiny tacos, dry rice, flavorless beans. We were looking for something that wasn’t fried seafood and had hoped this would be more like Mexican, or at least Tex-​Mex, food. It’s not. The fact that it’s been rated #1 Mexican food in Brewster says nothing, there are only 2 Mexican places there and it was by the local paper.

We stopped here for a bite after surfing Coast Guard beach last night. I would actually rate this 3.5 if that were possible, but since that’s not a thing they receive 3.
What’s good…
The food: The food was definitely tasty and quite unique. I got the Costa Rican Burro. One of the ingredients listed was «Mexican Street Corn.» Apparently it is a magical concoction of corn, melted cheese, and sour cream. Uh… Yep. I’m in! Completely delicious.
The ambiance: I dig the casual vibe. This is one of those low-​key, order-​inside-​but-​eat-​wherever places. They’ve got tables out on the deck as well as a few picnic tables off the deck. They’ve got cute strings of lights hanging and a set or two of cornhole in a sand pit for hanging out on a summer night.
The service: super friendly, helpful and seemed genuinely happy to help us. A rarity these days! The food came incredibly fast, too!
The not so good…
Portion size: Maybe I’m just used to every other Mexican place making burritos the size of infants, but I was surprised to see such a small one and it left me a little hungry. My husband ordered 2 tacos and what came would be what I would consider an appetizer. Knowing that it’s Brewster (big tourist area in an upscale-​ish town) I figured the prices would be higher than our typical local Mexican spots. The prices were actually right on par with every other place, but the portions are WAAAAAAAY smaller.
One more downside was cold, pre-​bagged chips! This is that half-​star that would bump my rating up to a full 4 instead of the 3.5 I wanted to give. Disclaimer: I understand that this is 100% a pampered, snobby, first-​world problem and for that I apologize. It’s just that hot chips with salsa is the ultimate starter while you wait for your food or to fill your belly with when you’re still hungry because your burrito was tiny.

I don’t have anything really bad to say about this place, but also nothing really good. The food with average but way too expensive. $ 11 for a burrito with no meat is kind of ridiculous. I’m not sure why they ask you if your food is «for here or to go» when you order, because I said it was for here and my burrito came all wrapped up in foil on a plastic tray. Even a plastic plate would have been ok. I wanted to try the tacos but I refuse to pay over $ 5 for one little taco. I also saw the special for the «Sonoran Dog» but it’s definitely not a real Sonoran dog. I come from Arizona and I know what a real Sonoran dog is. Overall it was just ok.

I used to love going to Guapos, but recently things seem to have changed. I don’t know if it’s just because they opened a second location or what, but the prices are totally crazy unreasonable for the amount of food you’re getting. One small taco is like $ 4.50 (they are really not big) and they completely eliminated a lot of good food on the menu (like nachos… what the heck)! A small guacamole and chips is $ 8.00, which also seems pretty crazy to me. I’m so sad that whatever has changed has made me not want to go back anymore.

It’s average. They kind of throw a lot of things together for their tacos, so flavors just mesh together. At least they use corn tortillas. I cook a lot of Mexican so I am a bit snobby when it comes to it. For the average joe, it’s good!

Not sure which is worse, the very high prices ($ 8 for a small guacamole and chips) or the food (the fact that the guacamole was repackaged from Costco.
Wow! Big, fat, bad WOW!

Average taco joint, portions felt small for the price, but this is cape cod and tourist season. I wouldn’t of minded paying the price about 70 dollars for 2 (no alcohol.) if the food was a little more impressive. Nothing popped and canned tomato over fresh in salsa didn’t go unnoticed. Also pico and other taco garnishes were not fresh, as in old beat up prep. If this place was half the price I could recommend it.

Great burritos and tacos! I ordered the El Spano Loco burrito… basically it was a couple fish tacos rolled into a burrito… it was awesome and easier to eat than the fish tacos! Great casual atmosphere!

Friendly family atmosphere. Fish burrito is always good as is the chicken enchiladas. Rum punch, red sangria, guacamole… It’s all great. Kyle is a great business owner as well!

Fish Tacos and Mexican Corn were very good. Sangria was adequate. (June 2012)
September 2014 update:
I drafted this review two years ago and somehow never posted it. As an update, since that time I have come to realize the fish tacos are far superior than the vast majority of other places east of the Mississippi River. Now I compare fish and even shrimp tacos to Guapos and am often disappointed. I think I need to go back and figure out what the thing is that Guapos has that others are missing.
So chow down on the fish tacos and ask for extra lime and sauce just for good measure

This place was just «meh». I wasn’t super impressed. The wait for alcoholic beverages while waiting for food was a bit long — girl in the window didn’t seem that adept. Food was just «okay». They left the guac off the wife’s taco salad which is annoying cause we got it to-​go. They also ran out of chips for nachos. How does THAT happen? (Last I checked tortilla + fryer = chips).
Anyway, not a lot of Mexican food options on the Cape. This will do, but don’t expect to be blown away. They have another spot in Orleans — maybe that one is better?

The chips are salty and the Pacifico was cold. ++
However…
The shrimp tacos were so bad I thought it was a joke. Shrimp so rubbery that I thought someone put the fake food, from a kids kitchen set, in a tortilla.
I would suggest better quality ingredients and less logo gift shop items

We Had tacos. The place was quite busy. The tacos were good but cold. I sent them back. They must have done absolutely nothing but remake them. They came out cold again. Between us we had 5 tacos and 2 small sodas. $$$ 28 bucks for cold tacos??? Ugh– this place gets great reviews from people on vacation in a good mood to leave a good review. The tables were dirty, the service slow. I wasn’t impressed. Although I did like the Bob Marley music they had playing.
Keep your expectations low– and bring lots of money!!!

When you’re in Cape Cod you have to adjust your food expectations. It’s more expensive and it doesn’t taste as good as (insert your town here). Guapo’s is no exception, but it’s still okay. This location has a great beach vibe. As for the food:
Burritos: NOPE. Too small. Don’t do it. Don’t!
Cowboy Burger: I think the burgers are the best item on their menu. They’re decent, priced right, cooked right.
Wings: Really expensive, but pretty good. They are about 50% of the way there to BonChon (Korean) chicken wings in terms of crispiness. I thinkt he Chipotle BBQ is more spicy than the Honey Habanero.
Crispy Fries: Meaty with a decent flaky crispness to them — not too crispy though.

Went 2x during the week of the 4^th of July. The location was convenient to the place I was renting for the week and the reviews were generally good for the place so I tried it out.
Ordered the shrimp tacos which tasted good but only had 1 shrimp cut into 3 pieces… wtf is up with that? I know that the automatic defense is that «it was one really big shrimp» but nuh uh… not even close
The experience of eating here made me want to stay away from smaller restaurants for fear of getting rippped off. Had a much better total experience in Providencetown

Nothing to me says «authentic Mexican food» like Bob Marley on the stereo, Corona «March Madness» decorations, and tacos served with pale lime-​green iceberg lettuce as their spiciest ingredient. (The «street corn» wasn’t too street, in that I was not afraid to eat it for fear of spoiled queso fresco, but we have been spoiled by decades living in California and the wonderful selection of authentic spicing and delicious e coli available from our street vendors of comida autentico there.) Portions were a bit slim for the price.
Are we clear here on the food? It’s fine — in fact, the Americano burgers were well above average — but only in the average realm. Guapo’s real charm is in the vibe: it’s a Jimmy Buffet zone right off the bike path, a very very fine destination or stop for a libation and a bite if you don’t mind a little tipsy bicycling or you have a designated driver on your tandem. Fine little margaritas ($ 8), the usual suspect selection of beers, easy outdoor seating for the kids (with a chalkboard to distract them), and just generally summery. Service is counter-​order with pickup via pager (and no table service tip necessarily implied) but very prompt.
So: three stars for the food, with some credit for Cape novelty but marks off on their contribution to world cuisine, but a raise to four stars for karma. If you’re just looking for a relaxing change to the usual choice between lines for fried seafood or glacially-​paced table service that is in-​season Cape, well-​recommended.

My favorite fish taco place in Tucson makes your tortillas fresh when you place your order. Yep, warm, soft yellow tortillas. So, I’ll start with a fresh New England slate here because you’ll get commercially made tortillas at Guapo’s and I remember when there wasn’t a single tortilla on Cape Cod, so let’s be happy.
Guapo’s food is flavorful. The street corn portion is huge. I’d like to see them offer grilled ears of corn.
