Our renovated 1883 country farmhouse rests on an 14 acre orchard of yearly fruits and pecans. Relax on the grand porch, or sit under the huge live oak trees and view the beautiful countryside.

The House of Atreus is located on a quiet, secluded country road just foot steps away from historic Independence, Texas where you will find the Antique Rose Emporium and Old Baylor University Park.

History

Established in 2009.

Atreus McCreery Clay was born in Owensbor, Kentucky March 1844. He married Katherine Pauline Clay (1844) of Friers Point, Mississippi.

House of Atreus was built in 1883 – 1884 by Atreus and Katherine. They raised 7 children in the house, three sons and four daughters: Thomas Thornhill, Nester, Tacitus, Kate, Alice, Leila, and Annabelle Clay.

Mr. Clay, a member of the well-​remembered family of Clays, loved to work in his garden and was known all around for his beautiful flowers.

Atreus and his brother, Captain Thomas C. Clay, were members of «Terry’s Rangers,» the 8th Texas Cavalry of the Confederate States of America. Many descendents of the prominent Clay family reside in the area of Independence, Texas.

Following the death of Mr. Clay, Mrs. Clay moved into town and gave the house to her son Thomas Thornhill and his bride, Dora Gerke. They raised three sons in the house: Atreus McCreery, Thomas Tacitus, and Nester Nash Clay. After the death of Thomas and Dora Clay, Nestoer and his w
