USS Turner Joy

This is a cool old destroyer from the Vietnam era you can explore. They are still doing work on the boat, it has a way to go as far as displays but it is still cool. Explore on your own or join one of the several tours they have. Ok if you are military go in uniform, the it is free. If not you can get in for half off. If not military you are going to need some cash or credit card. Good luck parking, there is parking close but it is quite confusing on how to pay for you spot and it’s unclear if it costs on Saturdays… So I might have wasted $ 3.
The staff doesn’t seem to like working at the historical Turner Joy. Maybe it’s boring working on a boat that doesn’t go anywhere… Either way if you are in the area, you should check it out.

This is a 50 year old retired USNaval destroyer in fairly good condition. Very interesting and educational to see how our navy boys live and work in such cramped quarters. The bridge and sonar room are great for the kids and they have 2 working powerful binoculars

It is so much fun to walk through and get a little glimpse of the life of a sailor.

went here with my 4 sons ages 5 to 13! we all loved it!!! we stayed for 2 hours, ate lunch and went back for another hour! most of the destroyer ship is available to explore and we liked that it was self guided so we could explore at our own pace. my kids liked trying to figure out if we’d «been here before» as we climbed up and down and in and out of rooms. there are helpful plaques and other information available through out the ship as well as a number of staff members who were around and happy to answer questions. my boys especially loved climbing in the gun turrets! the staff at the gift shop were friendly and helpful!

Very informative! You can take the ferry and walk a couple blocks too it. Great weekend trip! Very well ran!

I brought my disabled veteran father here, along with my mother, sister, and fiancé. The ship itself was alright. Some of the informational displays didn’t work, but it wasn’t a big deal. What upset me is that the lady at the counter where we bought tickets became very rude when we asked if there was a disabled veteran discount (I haven’t been to a military museum that didn’t offer one). Well, there is not a discount. They do offer a discount for active military though. This place also offers a discount for those who have a AAA membership, but not those who risked their lives for our country in the past. A bit ridiculous if you ask me. Upon leaving, I grabbed a visitor brochure for the Seattle area only to find a $ 1 off coupon for the museum! It really burns my cookies for the lack of respect towards retired military and the rude staff. If you do go here, be sure to grab one of the travel brochures and save a dollar.

The Turner Joy is visible from the ferry as you arrive in Bremerton. This place is pretty awesome. The admission is a fair price. The ship is well maintained and really clean. It’s cleaner that an active Navy ship. In the Nave I wasnt on a ‘Tin-​Can’ but I was impresed. The access that they grant you is definately the best. They have opened up main control, boiler room, CIC, berthings, mess decks, bridge, even the deck guns. They definately brought back some good memories from my days in the Navy.
Once you are done here walk over to the Navy Museum on the other side of the marina. It’s free.

I love this place! We wanted to check out Bremerton, took the ferry here and this is one of the place we stopped by.
It’s very easy to find. When you exit the terminal at Bremerton. Just follow the pier to the right. You can’t miss it.
This was last year, so I can’t remember the price. It’s not bad. But you would spend some time in here. You can get to almost everywhere on the ship. It’s a great tour when you visiting Bremerton. I would strongly recommended.

The USS Turner Joy is a part of Bremerton’s proud Naval history. As a ship that fought in the Vietnam War, it is a reminder of what our boys (and now girls) have to deal with when protecting our nation.
You can explore about 90% of the ship. From the bridge to the boiler room and everywhere in between is open to see and touch. We (my boys and I) checked out the inside of the cannons, sat in the Captain’s chair on the bridge and well, went up and down every ladder they could find.
It is a great self-​guided tour but many of the Sailors that served on the Turner Joy and live locally act as volunteer guides. They are a great source of information and truly seemed to enjoy talking about the Turner Joy.

I’ve lived in the Seattle area for a long time, but I hadn’t been to Bremerton in at least 15 years. While I was looking for an interesting day trip for out-​of-​towners I stumbled across the USS Turner Joy. We hopped on the ferry from Seattle (a big hit with the visitors) and spent a nice afternoon on the other side of the water.
The USS Turner Joy was a lot of fun to explore. My wife and I had our 3 year old son in tow, and he was thrilled with being able to explore so many nooks and crannies of this large vessel. The stairs are basically ladders (and there are several), but it’s a fascinating look into history. Entrance isn’t cheap ($ 12) and I wish I had planned more time to explore. Budget yourself a good 2 hours.
We had a nice lunch at Fritz right near the marina. If you’re looking for fish and chips (and chips and chips and chips) and burgers that’s where to go. It’s very low key. If you want something fancier head over to Anthony’s.

The Turner Joy is a fantastic piece of U.S. history! There is so much to look at and read, you’ll fill your brain long before you’ve explored it all.
Go go go! And have fun imagining what it must’ve been like to live and work on this ship ²⁴⁄₇.

Nice location and good place to visit. Well-​maintained and they also do some local retirements here too. The ship looks like it’s ready to head out to sea and that’s a tribute to the hard work and dedication to the staff’s «deck hands!»

Awesome! You can go almost every place in this ship, which as we came to find out fired the first and last US shots of the Vietnam War. Incredible piece of history, and even if you don’t like history, it is just a cool ship. Lots to see and LOTS of «stairs» to climb. Take the term stairs with a grain of salt because they only stick out about 3 inches from one step to another. Watch out for your shins, and don’t bring anyone with balance problems.
We will probably be back in the warmer months to check it out again.

A museum in every right and we loved it. Not for anyone that’s not in decent shape – as all have said, plenty of stairs and narrow metal ladders to climb throughout. The volunteers on board make it even more interesting with their wealth of info and insights. A great memorial to the fine servicemen of the American Navy and a fun historical experience for an afternoon in Bremerton.

This was a lot of fun. It’s a self guided tour of the USS Turner, a Navy Ship that fought in the Vietnam War. There are guided tours, but with the posted signs and the information paper you get it’s pretty easy to get around and learn about life onboard a Navy Ship. It cost $ 10, but it’s worth the money. A good way to spend a Saturday. It’s located near the ferry terminal, so there is a lot of parking. It’s also walking distance to the ferry for Seattle and walking distance to the Navy Museum, which is free admission.

It is a fun day trip to go over and see this ship. Walk on to the Bremerton Ferry and it will take you right there. You can see the Turner Joy when the ferry docks. Just walk over, pay your admission ($ 5 or something — very cheap), and you have access to the entire destroyer. Climb up to the bridge, go down to the engine room, check out the captain’s quarters, and every place in between. You don’t get to fire the 5 inch guns, but that is one of the few restrictions. If you go into every space on the ship and read all of the signs you can easily make a day trip put of it. There are also usually veterans volunteering on board the ship so you can ask questions. This is a real Navy ship so one has to climb ladders or steep stairs to get to some places. It is not wheel chair or stroller accessible. Kids should be able to get up and down a ladder or else you are going to be pretty worn out by the end of the day. Combined with the ferry ride, this makes a fun thing to go and do.
