I’ve only been here a few times and don’t know why we don’t come more! The service is always good and the queso with chorizo is amazing(though it is mostly just cheese). The fajitas and tacos are both great!

We had dinner at El Serape last night and once again, it was delicious. We have been dining here since it opened years ago and El Serape remains an amazingly consistent restaurant. Their salsa is excellent as are their margaritas. We started with Queso Asado, a dish of melted cheese and seared chorizo slices, which we pared with Carnitas, meaty bits marinated in chipoltle peppers and orange juice, delicious. Our main course was the famous Mixed Grill which includes chicken breast, steak, chorizo sausage and shrimp in cilantro sauce, served with black beans, rice and guacamole. Superb. Love it. You will too!

I READTHEREVIEWSBEFOREGOINGHEREANDWASDECIEVED! BEINGOFHISPANICDECENT This has got to be the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. I was first disgusted by the rude service of our waiter. Then I thought the overpriced food would make up for the lack of customer service. But that was not the case. The Pollo a la Naranja literally tasted like overcooked grilled chicken doused in Orange juice. FAIRWARNING: I do not recommend this place.

Got to listen to the waitress argue with a customer about the temp of her soup for 5 minutes, employees talking shit about each other in front of the 15+ people waiting to be seated… Oh & the highlight of my experience was the 2 nice & big thick black hairs in my rice… Yum. I’ll stick with La Paloma

Why does this place only have 3.5 stars? I haven’t found a mexican joint that even compares to El Sarape. The food is fresh and consistently delicious, and the drinks are top notch. Try the Enchiladas mole. El Sarape is hands down my favorite restaurant. The outside may be a bit run down, but isn’t that just a sign of authenticity?

Love this place. Awesome food, awesome service. There is one downfall, the bartender spent more time socializing and talking to friends than helping the servers lined up into the kitchen. Servers were very apologetic. Next time order a double, because whenever the blond guy is bar tending you’re drinks may take a while. Kudos to the servers and management, took the time to get the job done and in a timely manner.

I’m only giving this place 2 stars because the sangria was good. The food is so poor quality, when you’ve had real Mexican food, you can tell the difference and this place isn’t good at all. The rice and beans had no flavor at all. The beef soft tacos were super soggy and heavy. Probably won’t be coming back here. Totally not impressed.

El Sarape is one of those gems that is always consistent. Best authentic Mexican anywhere, hands down! We have been coming here for years and I even threw my husband’s 40th birthday party here, as it’s his favorite. To start, we always get the carnitas with cheese. The carne asada is my husband’s go to choice, and the pescado a la crema is mine. The presidente margarita is divine and and the Sarape roll for dessert never disappoints. Love this place!!!

I was first struck with the low quality décor and lack of hygiene, including dirty glasses and dusty everything, but wanted to give the food a shot. Really overpriced for what you got, sorry to say. I wanted to like this place, but will not return. Not authentic and not that tasty. Boring Mexican? Yup. Found it. One of us in the group was additionally awarded with a bout of stomach trouble directly following which I avoided, so it could be unrelated. Wish I could write a better review.

This is one of my favorite restaurants around. Best sangria I have ever had and the enchilada verdes are a must try. This is authentic Mexican food so if your idea of Mexican is Chili’s this may not be the place for you. Don’t let the outside appearance fool you, it really is great.

Went here for my birthday this past April and really enjoyed the food. I loved the size of the portions(not to overwhelming) and the service was very friendly. I went for lunch, so drinking was not on the mind, but the margarita selection was tempting! I am a big fan of the salsa here, just enough kick to be pleasant. I am happy there is somewhere kind of nearby that serves decently yummy authentic Mexican other then a terrible chain that does a half assed job. And umm yeah that caramel sauce they have, ADDICTING. It was so so so good. I am a fan of this place and will be back eventually!

Very happy we took a chance on this place. The outside looks like it is closed and the interior doesn’t shout clean establishment but the food is excellent. My son ordered a meal and to make sure that he would enjoy it they brought out samples of the sauces for him to try. We ordered the queso and was presently surprised by the hot cheese delight that showed up. The chips were good and the guacamole was excellent as well. We will be returning

El Sarape has the best Mexican food on the South Shore. I love their steak fajitas. Call ahead to see when they offer live music. The frozen margaritas are the best. Cons– on street parking is difficult, but plenty of parking out back and you may enter through their back door as you pass the kitchen. The toppings for fajitas are charged separately and not included as part of the meal…(Sour cream, lettuce, tomato). It can also get a bit noisy in the restaurant. However, the food is excellent.

The negatives: 1) 95% of the food we ordered, lacked sufficient seasoning. 2) The Burrito was more like a slice of lasagna. You couldn’t hold it and it was flat. 3) On a Friday night, it took us 30 minutes to get seated. Which isn’t out of the ordinary. But, it took another 20 minutes to actually get a drink from our server. The positives 1) the guacamole was good. 2) Drinks are good 3) The live music was appropriate. If you want authentic Mexican Food, you’re in the wrong place. If you want to stop for drinks on your way to dinner, check it out.

I would give El Sarape 3 ½ Stars… What I liked most about El Sarape is that it feels more authentic than a lot of other Mexican joints around. My husband and I spent a wonderful week in Tulum a couple years ago, and when we went to El Sarape for dinner, we were, just for a moment, transported back via our taste-buds! We started with the guacamole and the queso asado. Both, in our experience, were delicious. The guacamole had an incredibly creamy quality to it — almost like it was whipped. Very good. The queso asado was so good, we were literally taking knives and scraping the sides of the crock to get all the bits of cheese off. I decided to get the Tostados. Crispy tortillas layered with beans and beef, melted cheese and lettuce. It could have been spicier, but the flavors were there. There are two tostados on the plate… but after my appetizers, I could only manage to eat one of them. One of the things we liked best about the menu is the option to mix-n-match. My husband was able to try and couple items(enchiladas and something else, but I can’t remember) and my Mom did the same. Everyone raved about their food. It definitely lacked that super spicy quality I associate with some Mexican food, but I didn’t find anything to be overtly bland… so that was a plus. Finally, dessert. There was this version of what I can only describe as a Mexican cannoli… a sugar shell, rolled and filled with a ricotta cheesecake filling, doused in chocolate and whipped cream… it was absolutely, 100% amazing. I would come back just to eat a couple of those!

Yummy! I will admit this places looks a bit sketchy on the outside but the food is really good. I went with the burrito and my boyfriend had the enchiladas verse and both were delicious! The green sauce is awesome, a little tart a little spicy. Had to do the churro a for desert and you can’t go wrong. Our server was excellent and super friendly!

My fiancé and I are California transplants. From time to time, we get desperate for an authentic Mexican meal. Overall El Sarape had more hype from our New England friends than it could deliver. I am giving it a 2 because it was pricy for what it was. It was, however, one of the more authentic menus I have seen in the greater Boston area. The salsa was mediocre and was like what you get from a lower-end fast food salsa bar. The guacamole was creamy and missing the bite and texture that I expect for a small 6.95 side. The pollo a la naranja was pretty good. This was by far the best item we ordered, but it was way over priced at 16.50. It is served as a thin fillet of chicken in a spicier butter orange sauce and covered in cheese with a side of refried black beans and rice. The poblanos enchiladas were underwhelming. The mole was bland and thick, not what I expect from one of the most complex sauces in the Mexican cuisine. I would stay away from any of the more complex dishes on their menu. We will not be going back. I’d rather cook mexican at home.

The best Mexican food north of the boarder! Yes the awning is worn and old, maybe the inside is dated, but isn’t that what you want in an authentic Mexican restaurant ! Sit at the bar and enjoy the conversation with the regulars or grab a table, the service is always great. The fish and shrimp dishes are fantastic prepared in a variety of ways. The beef tacos are simple and delicious and perfect for a newbie. You won’t get out of here cheap if you eat and drink, but the food and drinks won’t leave you unhappy, trust me I’ve been coming weekly for 26 years! 4 stars because they need an update, but be patient they are waiting to see about the Landing redevelopment.
