History

Established in 1988.

In 1988 Tampa’s food scene was forever changed when Salem opened the first Salem’s Gyros & Subs on Hillsborough Ave. Run by Salem and his wife, the family-​owned business struggled through the early years with Salem working mostly night shifts to keep the restaurant running. Some days would only net a few hundred dollars in sales and many wrote them off as yet another eatery doomed to die.

Salem’s hard work and dedication (not to mention his delicious family recipes) paid off and the restaurant was able to relocate to a free-​standing building. This original Tampa location is still standing today, serving the best gyros and subs in the bay area! Salem attributes his success to his dedicated staff and most importantly, his customers.
