History

Established in 1976.

Western Disposal is a local family-​owned business that started over 35 years ago with one truck and a vision of what customers would value in a trash collection company: dependable, on-​time service from friendly, well-​trained employees. During the 40 years we have been in business, we have evolved into a company with 120 employees, over 70 vehicles on the road each day and 35,000 residential and commercial customers. We attribute this success to our commitment to provide the best service to all our customers every day. Even though we are literally all over town every day, we have one of the best safety records in our industry and we have won the «Pewter Stag» award several times from the Hartford Insurance Company for our safety record and our safety programs. Monthly, we randomly survey our customers concerning their satisfaction with our service. We average over a 50% response rate to our surveys with 96% of respondents reporting they are more than satisfied with our service.

The price keeps going up and up — Now over $ 50 per MONTH for their horrible service. That works out to more than $ 10 per week for about 30 seconds of service.
The service just keeps getting worse. They can not be bothered to get the bill out in the mail before the end of the month, but then they want payment immediately. They claim that their billing system won’t allow them to actually print and send the bills out any earlier (um… BS to that). They rake in the cash and can not even send out a printed schedule — you have to print it from their website. They have no problem printing mountains of other crap to include in the bill, but never anything of any real use. EVERY week they dump bits of trash onto the street and then leave it for me to pickup — after they run over it and spread it around. I hate this company and wish I had another choice. Last week they demolished the cart next door by dropping it and then catching it on the back of the truck and running over it. They just kept on driving leaving chunks of brown plastic everywhere.

Don’t use these people. They are idiots. They constantly miss either the trash pick-​up or one of the other bi-​weekly services: recycling or compost. And even when they «re-​schedule», they still miss the pick-​up, because they say the can wasn’t out there, which is not true. And, they don’t pick up from the driveway, so when they do re-​schedule i have to get up and drag the can out to the alley.
I have my second bill from them in front of me, and I am not paying it. I am not paying any cancellation fees either. I appreciate the person on this board who recommended another company. I hope they are better.
Yes, yes, the customer service people are very nice. But the actual service is bad.

They may be the only game in town BUT: they are always polite and cheerful (except the front desk gal who is probably stunned when someone actually walks into the offices). They clean things up if they fall out of the trash can. The employees seems to be genuinely cheerful. The cost isn’t out of line for trash hauling. I only disagree with their changing their recycling schedule. They used to pick up recycling every week, now it is every other week, which for a recycler like me isn’t enough.

Like others have said, Western Disposal has a near monopoly on trash and recycling pickup in Boulder. You pay thru the nose for weekly services. What pisses me off is that they keep raising their rates. Every year, for the past 5 years, the fees have gone up. First is was due to the high cost of fuel, but now that fuel prices have dropped they still raised their rates again this year (2015). Maybe it’s due to health care costs, or that the guys that work there need a better living wage? I don’t know, but it was too high for me.
I used them for 20 years because my HOA had a deal worked for our neighborhood. However, I began recycling long before Western Disposal offered it. They had given out so many cans, that I just didn’t have room in my garage anymore, and with all the critters around, I didn’t want to leave the case outside in backyard. So, I had them collect all but the trash can. Then I would take my recycling to the free locations. I took my compost to Whole Foods (about once every week), so there was very little trash to put out on a weekly basis. I began calling in vacation status so I got credit for the weeks they didn’t stop at my house. Then I got even smarter.
I produce very little actual trash. I use the large paper lawn and leaf bags that biodegrade as my garbage bags in the garage, and the corn starch BioBags for my indoor cans and compost. It takes a month or more for me to fill 1 of those paper lawn and leaf bags. So instead of having WD come to me, when I’ve got a full bag, I load it in my car, along with my recycling and compost and take it to them. Cost: about $ 5 a month. It’s free to take my recycling and composting to their site. I only pay for the trash bag. I charge it to my credit card and I’m in and out in about 5 minutes or less.

These guys probably never get any props so this morning I wanted to express my gratitude for their reliable service. It’s snowy and below zero here in Louisville and they showed up as usual without missing a beat. Plus, I had a crazy amount of leaves and the truck driver (white hair and grey beard) schlepped all of our bags by hand into his truck without missing a beat… then he relentlessly made sure all the leave stuck and frozen into our brown garbage can were shaken out of it so it would be totally emptied. Anyway, so corny to express my gratitude for him doing his job, but it’s one of the least glamorous jobs on this planet and I simply appreciate the consistent service!

They’re always very polite and helpful on the phone.
Today the driver made my morning. I’d forgotten to put the cans out last night so I rushed out to try to catch him. I got out there as he drove by but after he finished with the neighbor he backed up and grabbed my can. He saved me from two weeks of hearing that the full recycling bin was my fault.

Very expensive, near monopoly on Boulder weekly trash collection. I am one person living in a house, I produce very little trash — like one or two kitchen bags a week — yet their smallest container is many times more than I’ll ever need. Then I left out a lightweight screen door for them to take, thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal and the huge truck will just crush it like everything else. It ended up costing an extra $ 19.50. Maybe it’s because the guys had to actually get out of the truck for a second. While they were not rude on the phone, with a near monopoly presence in Boulder for weekly trash collection they clearly feel no need to be helpful or friendly. Well I’ve had enough and am looking elsewhere. Haven’t found any alternative so far.

Just called in this morning to try to set up recycling for our newly leased commercial space. The woman on the phone was completely unhelpful and refused to give me any information regarding recycling size, cost, scheduled pick up without speaking to the landlord. I wasn’t even trying to «officially» set anything up, I simply was trying to get pricing to let the landlord decide what to do. Very rude experience.

Awful and EXPENSIVE!!! If you have seen the Sopranos and are aware of the «shakedown» in the sanitation business, then sign up with these guys. They are unbelievably expensive, nickle and diming you for everything you throw out, and did I mention the fees???
Surcharges galore will fill your invoice! Boulder city trash tax, recycle surcharge, fuel surcharge, volume surcharge… it never ends!
Well, it ended today. I canceled and went with another disposal company (whose name involves moving in ONE direction or WAY).
Not to mention, when I cancelled, these people were so rude. They even added an extra 2 yards of additional garbage for the final bill. I suggest that you stay away from this racket and find another company.

After my third frustrating phone conversation, I’ve decided to cancel my service and find another waste pickup vendor. A focus on customer service is nonexistent at Western Disposal. Their website goes down for days at a time; their online billing system is bug-​ridden.
