Description

Specialties

West Gate Kung Fu is an academy devoted to the exploration and preservation of rare, intricate, and beautiful martial arts traditions in an open, conscious community. We specialize in evocative and challenging styles of traditional Chinese martial arts that develop both mindful and effective self-defense skills and an appreciation for sophisticated physical art forms. If that calling speaks to you, come join a unique culture where the work is demanding, but friendship is easy. Whether you’re brand-new to martial arts or have decades of experience, there’s a place for you here, and always more to discover. Our programs balance intensity with enjoyment, challenge with growth, and who you are with who you will become. So try us for a few weeks — on the house — and see martial arts in a new light.

History

Established in 2010.

West Gate was established by Sifu Adam Reed, a student of Grandmaster Johnny Kwong Ming Lee and an international gold medalist in traditional northern long-fist kung fu.

Meet the Business Owner

Adam R.

Business Owner

West Gate’s founder and program director has over 25 years of experience in the martial arts. Adam’s martial arts training began in 1989 in the D.C. area with the Thompkins Karate Association, and he’s been in love with the arts ever since. In 1994, he found kung fu at Lee’s White Leopard Kung Fu School under Grandmaster Johnny Kwong Ming Lee (now in Dallas, TX), who is among the world’s most respected traditional Chinese martial arts masters. While Adam’s journey through the martial arts would put him in touch with many great teachers, it was Grandmaster Lee who would be Adam’s sifu and mentor for the next twenty years. He still is today, and Adam visits the Grandmaster regularly to continue his own studies. Thanks to generous introductions from his sifu, Adam has also studied with Grandmaster C.H. Marr, Dr. Ray Luk, Grandmaster Raymond Wong, Master Alex Kwok, Master Patrick Lee, and Master Wang Tak Wing.
