Specialties

We are a Front Range skateboard community in Colorado. We specialize in skateboarding lessons, camps and full-day clubs.

We are owned and operated by professional educators as well as sponsored skaters. After all, anyone can learn tricks… we focus on the kids!

History

Established in 2010.

Square State Skate was officially formed in 2010 after operating as Catalyst Skateboard Lessons for several years.

We have decades of skateboarding experience and nearly as much experience working with children and teens.

Meet the Business Owner

Brian B.

Business Owner

Brian Ball is currently an employee of the Boulder Valley School District, working as a paraeducator at the elementary level. Prior to that, he was an Associate Program Director and Director of Summer Programming for the YMCA of Boulder Valley. Brian started skateboarding in 1985 and has appeared in nearly every major skateboard publication, including Thrasher Magazine, SLAP and Lowcard. He has also been in numerous skateboard videos including Thrasher’s King of the Road, Trick Factory’s Off the Couch as well as several videos from Meta Skateshop. Brian, under an alias, had a pro wheel from the biggest skateboard wheel company, Spitfire Wheels. He has been sponsored by All Heart Skateboards, Coffee Skateboards and Meta Skateshop in Boulder. He has been on flow from Independent Trucks, OJ Wheels, Spitfire and Roughneck Hardware.

My son has attended the camps at Square State Skate (SSS) for the past 4 years and will again this summer. He has made great friends, learned some cool tricks and most importantly, has gained confidence in himself. This camp is better than any other summer camp experience. It is fun, because of course, the kids get to spend all day skating at the best parks with their buddies. They also have pizza parties, bbqs, swimming, visits from sponsored/competitive skaters and make a point of supporting locally owned and operated shops. SSS are advocates of health and fitness and manage to steer clear of the some of the more unsavory associations skateboarding might have. SSS is its own community, completely independent of the parents. It gives kids a sense of contributing to something important and of belonging to a tradition, and they own it. There is an ethos of personal responsibility and leadership. The older campers are taught to extend this to the newer ones so the counselors are mentors instead of disciplinarians. What’s more, the counselors always seem to be enjoying themselves as much as the campers. My son once said that what he likes best is that he can just be himself and do his thing at Square State. If he can feel free but still be safe and healthy, that is pretty much the perfect combo.

Square State rocks big time. My two sons have attended Summer Camp at Square State for the past four years and it is always the highlight of their Summer. They can’t get enough.
They love learning new moves from the pros at Square State and they love travelling all over the Boulder and Denver metro area to the area’s best skate parks and shops. Square State skaters have fun and enjoy the easy camaraderie that quickly develops among the campers and counselors.
As a parent, I love the care and attention the Square State team brings to their camp experience. Square State’s leaders have a strong commitment to molding their skaters into ambassadors for skateboarding and promoting its culture of tolerance, inclusion, and fair play. Skateboarding is fun but it also requires real effort and dedication to learn the more «rad» techniques. Overcoming the obstacles on the way to these accomplishments is a major thrill for Square State’s campers. Well trained and caring counselors are there every step of the way reinforcing the resolve of their skaters and delivering the proven techniques that accelerate each Square Stater’s learning curve.
Square State campers are the best. They learn the best skateboard moves AND they learn values of commitment, inclusion, fair play and service. Something for everyone and the most fun my two boys have ever had at a Summer camp. And it’s just as much fun for girls.

Square State Skate has MADE my son’s summer. And now my daughter wants to sign up too. They teach the kids how to skate with great techniques and even greater results. But the best thing about the program is that they also model and teach other skills, like being respectful, keeping track of your own stuff, and helping other kids out. And it works because the coaches are actually COOL, unlike us parents (according to our kids anyway). So the kids really listen to them and are motivated to follow their lead.
They know how to lead and inspire a group of kids, keep them safe and show them a rocking’ good time. The only bad thing I can say is this — if you take your kids to Square State Skate Camp, they won’t like their other camps as much, because this one is by far the best!
We look forward to participating in Square State programs during the winter months too.

We signed up for a one-week summer course. My boys had never tried skateboarding before, and my one son was terrified, but John and Neil worked with them both, and they love it!!! Highly recommend!

Beware! they make the love for skating contagious!
My son (7) wanted to learn to skate, so my husband taught him some, then took him to a Square State Skate Saturday lesson. Before we knew it, Dad «needed» a board for Christmas just like the one he had as a teen, little sister started skating and going to the Saturday drop-ins, and yes, now even mom is skating and loving it.
The instructor (Neil) brings a great balance of solid skate instruction and corny jokes, and we love the drop-in feature as we’re not tied to a set schedule. If we’re in town, we go skate.
