RockyMounts

I gave them 3 tries and they struck out all 3 times. I just don’t understand how this store has stayed in place with the terrible service they dish up. Reading the reviews here shows me it’s either 1 or 5 stars.
Many years ago, I first came here to get a car rooftop storage box, a canoe carrier and a bike rack for my ’97 Subbie Outback wagon, before driving off for a summer of activities. I still had my ski and snowboard rack on top, which I removed while in the parking space out front. I went inside the store and began looking at what was on display. There was no one out front to help me. So I waited. 10 minutes went by and still no one came out. I eventually heard some drilling noises in the back, so I popped my head through the doors to ask if someone could come help me. One of two guys, yelled at me that the area was for employees only and no one could come help me just now. He suggested I come back in an hour. I did, but got the same rude attitude. I left and drove down to REI in Denver, where I got excellent service. The REI in Boulder wasn’t here then.
Fast forward to 2009. Youngest kid was going off for the summer to WWOOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state, before going off to college. She needed a rooftop storage box, for her Jetta sedan, and a bike rack to fit the little tow hitch on the car. No rails already on the Jetta. We came here first, because I wanted to support a local business, and I thought that maybe they had changed employees by now, so I might get good advice and service, but I got the same treatment as before. Lack of service and just outright rudeness when I asked for help. We headed to REI in Boulder and got what we needed at a great price, plus great service and help with installation as well.
In 2011, I bought a used ’02 Outback wagon for my youngest. She wanted a bigger car than the Jetta sedan, one more capable of going off-​road (the Jetta sits very low to the ground), and one that was better in bad weather too. Considering how often college kids move, I suggested a weather-​proof storage box and a bike rack for it too. The old bike rack had gone missing and probably wouldn’t have fit this car anyway, and the old rooftop box was too small and damaged as well (cracked and leaky, broken locks). We first went to RockyMounts, because she wanted to, but we got the same exact holier-​than-​thou attitude and lack of help from all 4 guys working there that day. We waited for about 30 minutes, because they were busy fitting other gear on other cars. Once they were done though, the staff decided to help others who came in after us instead. I tried to point this out to one employee, but all the guys were just indifferent, as though we were invisible, conveniently disappearing into the back and never coming back out. I should have known better to come here, but was willing to give them just one more chance, for my daughter’s sake. Yet, they blew it again. So, we left, and again we went to REI and got excellent service, much better pricing, and free installation to boot.
I just don’t understand the mentality of the empoyees here. You’re a customer-​oriented business, are you not? Why would you EVER piss off potential customers and allow them to walk away, when they are ready to buy? You’ve now lost out on at least a three grand in sales from me.
Now that I’m looking for gear racks again, I’ll be going straight to REI, def not RockyMounts! I HIGHLY recommend REI over RockyMounts for everything. No BS, they back and service what they sell, and they are happy to help you too.

Over the years, I have been to this store for advice but usually made no decision at all about what to do about our unusual sports carrier needs for a variety of vehicles. Or, occasionally, made a choice through a different vendor.
At this point, our ski carrier is very old and useless to us as we usually go to the mountains just as a two-​some, so everything will fit inside of an old Outback. But once a year we take out of town guests/​visiting relatives with us and this inside choice does not work well and the old carrier is too small for the number of ski choices we now take. Or as some in the car say, the inside choice does’t work at all (though we HAVE gotten to our overnight destination with a lot of gear, though not comfortably.)
As I found out on my first internet search for solutions, compact roof top systems have advanced a lot in the last decade. And it is unfortunate that we did not do a box top years ago, but if you live like we do, no garage, no basement, no real alternative options, off season storage is a «fail.» I saw a rack possibility on RockyMounts website and having the luxury to visit the actual store of this nationally known company since it is a Boulder founded business, I did just that. And first thing in the morning, on a weekday when they would not be as busy as I see when I drive by on a weekend. I usually want a lot of advice from staff to find a solution in cases like this.
The salesperson was incredibly helpful and showed me both their branded unit (which was nicely made) that I had looked at online and which might have been sufficient for our size needs, but just barely, but also 2 other options from a major international brand that fit my particular needs even better, for not so much more money. In fact, one option was so superior in so many ways that I bought it and the sales person was kind enough to put it right on the car for me. I am very short and would have needed step ladder and help to mount it myself. My only off street option at my house is in the shade and so still has inches of packed ice on it from the last two snows.
Nice all around deal and I would not hesitate to go there again should the need arise.

I went in with a broken Thule ski carrier. My key broke and was lodged into the core. I had gotten the carriers from rack attack but this place is around my corner. So I stopped in. For $ 10 they were able to fix everything and issue me new keys.
Cody is the man. He was 2 steps ahead of me the entire process. He was able to extract my old key, smile, had two keys ready for me. He embodied the perfect business team member. Polite, professional, and prompt!

This place has great customer service and knowledgable, friendly staff! I stopped by here on a recommendation from a friend, with ski racks for my Subaru that I had purchased secondhand a couple years ago. I had never used them on my car as two of the feet were broken, the other two were dated, and I had also since lost the keychain that held the only key.
The staff who was helping me (younger guy with long hair, I forgot his name) spent almost an hour replacing all four feet on my racks, mounting the crossbars AND racks, and triple checking the work to make sure everything was functional and user friendly. He also made me two keys, and I was out the door for less than $ 50. I will definitely be back and refer all my friends who need ski/​bike rack help!

Awesome product, outstanding customer service. The staff has been helpful available and resourceful (thanks especially to Luis!). I was rear-​ended in a hit and run accident and they repaired my rack in less than 24 hrs and didn’t charge me for labor. Fun shop, too!

Last week i purchased a car bicycle rack and I wasn’t totally satisfied so they exchanged it, no problem.
They credited me fully the difference, no BS return fee or restocking fee.

Very positive experience here. Worked with some guys this weekend on finding a rack for my subaru forester. They were really great on matching prices without a lot of fuss. I brought my car over to see which of the hitch racks would fit best and they were able to put a few of them on. This proved invaluable as I was set on one model and ended up going with another because of some fit issues.

This is regarding their customer service rather than their products. HUGE ‘better-​than-​thou’ attitude! I had to beg to be helped, I was assigned a person to help me, but then he disappeared in the back and I found out instead he was helping out someone that came after me but that they knew. I left. I would love to support local comapnies, but this one is off my list for sure.

Good racks, and when I had an issue with a part, replaced it on the spot — quick and free no questions.

Reputation for grumpiness — well deserved. Too cool is a terrible way to do business. Please may I buy a rack, please? Do me the kind favor of selling me a rack since you must be the only game in town.

Needed to get my bike to Moab and got a great rack at a good price. Will be back.

Amazing customer support and service. They stand by their work and products. Simply the best possible experience. Perhaps a wee bit more expensive than if you bought the gear online but oh so very worth it.

When looking to install a roof rack on my vehicle, this place came recommended through a friend. I went in on a Saturday to inquire and placed an order to install a Thule kit rack. I was told that the order would be placed on Monday and the parts would be there by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. Four and a half weeks later and after me having to follow up with them several times as to the status of the order, I still don’t have a rack. Customer Service is horrible at this place. Never once did they call me with an update, I always called them. Needless to say, I cancelled my order and will not be doing business with them. Horrible, horrible customer service!

Fitted my new jeep with a Kuat roof basket and hitch mounted bike rack from RockyMounts. Great service. They ordered my Kuat roof basket and had it in two days. Helped out with a demo and install of the hitch mounted rack. Great guys… you might find a rack for a few bucks less online but then who’s gonna help you put it together? Buy local!

I think RockyMounts makes some usually decent products, but I discovered the hard way that the company has horrible customer service policies.
I bought two RockyMounts Jawbridge car top bike mounts in spring 2013. I put one on my car and left the other one in the box unopened. I discovered that I didn’t like the way the product worked, figured I was stuck with the one I had on my roof but just four months later tried to exchange the unopened Jawbridge (still in the box) and was told no way! They said they had discontinued the product and wouldn’t accept returns on it, even in exchange for a different RockyMounts product.
The guy working at the Boulder store suggested I put it on eBay. He said ‘You might find someone who wants it.‘
Beware! You’re better off buying products from someone who stands behind what they sell.

Manager has a huge attitude problem. He tried to upsell me new racks that I didn’t need and took an attitude when I declined the offer. He also started blaming me for a potential malfunction in the bike rack cam. Who starts blaming the customer as their first response?
Mediocre product + premium price + poor customer service = buy somewhere else!

Carry stuff on the top of your car? Just bought a canoe and realized it won’t fit inside your Smart car? Go see these guys. They know how to fit bikes, kayaks, skis, and (probably) beer kegs on your roof. Or your spare tire on the back of your Hummer.
Most of the US pro bike racing teams have Rocky Mounts set up their vehicles.
Much of what they sell, they make themselves.

Both times we left the rack/​box keys on the roof of the car and drove off, the guys at the Rocky Mounts shop were super helpful in getting us replacement keys ASAP. Without even mocking us.
