History

Established in 1995.

In 1995, Brad and Lisa Pellman founded Pellman’s Automotive in Boulder, Colorado. The goal was to create a successful family-​owned business that pays as much attention to the details of excellent customer service as it does to thorough, precise automotive maintenance and repair.

We started out small — with just two employees (Brad and Lisa!) and one bay. Eventually, through the combination of Brad’s extensive automotive repair experience and Lisa’s business expertise, that original goal was turned into a reality.

Pellman’s now has twelve employees, seven oversized work bays, an alignment bay, state-​of-​the-​art specialty tools and technologies, and a spacious office with a clean, comfortable customer lounge.

The environment is very important to us and we take many steps to reduce our impact including installing 194 solar panels on our roof which provide over 100% of the electricity that we use.

In 2013 we were proud to be named the Top Shop in the Nation by MotorAge Magazine.

Business Owner

Brad Pellman (the husband half of the Pellman’s husband/​wife owner team) has been in the automotive repair business since 1979. He’s an ASE Master Technician and is an Accredited Automotive Manager with the Automotive Management Institute. He also sits on several industry boards including the Automotive Service Association of Colorado (ASA), ASE, MAPS and CCPN.

Brad has lived in the Boulder area since 1974 and loves to play soccer, attend Avalanche games and spend time with his family when he is not at the shop.

As a woman, sometimes (often) you get subpar treatment at a mechanic’s. Here, I felt consistently treated with respect and as an equal. It made me feel really comfortable asking questions and gathering information (I need my cat replaced – an expensive repair that I wanted to find out as much as possible about).
In short, their services aren’t the cheapest (but hey, it’s Boulder), but their service, speed and quality are well worth it :)

I was visiting from Pennsylvania when my headlights went out due to a bum combination switch. I’ve a 22 year old Isuzu Trooper, and the first good sign was seeing another Trooper awaiting repair in the parking lot. Since Isuzu hasn’t made Troopers in a long while, this was a good sign that they had experience dealing with this older vehicle. And, sure enough, they were able to identify the problem and get me on the road with prompt, friendly service.
The owner even went the extra mile to help identify a problem with a burnt out 12v system. (What they used to call a cigarette lighter in the ancient days.) We weren’t able to resolve that problem, which was OK since that was not on the original work order. But the information I got should prove helpful for me to take a crack fixing it myself when I return home.
Though I didn’t take advantage of it, I did see that they were doing a very Boulder thing of having loaner bikes available for customers. As an East Coaster I thought this was brilliant.

After initially being mad and disappointed in Pellmans, I’m happy to say that they made this situation right with us!
We drove our Corvette back up to their shop to have the middle console put back in, and to get the door clips replaced that had been damaged… We sat a spoke with Dan for a very long time. He was apologetic and said that they just wanted to make this right for us. I was really happy that they fixed our car like they promised!
Dan said that they would replace the door clips, and get the console lock installed and coded at no charge to us! And that’s exactly what happened! I appreciate a place that keeps its word! And now I’m honoring my word! Thank you for honoring your word and making us happy customers! I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my vehicle here for services! I think we had a couple of hiccups along the way, but this is a good shop that cares about the customers. They handled this situation perfectly, and I just want to say thank you again!

I had to take my car to Pellman’s twice. The first time they charged me $ 100 (!?!) for an oil change among other repairs. The primary repair was the A/​C system, which they recharged for ~$ 140. Well, a week later it wasn’t working so I brought it back. The unfortunate part was that I was about to take a roadtrip the next day across Nevada so I needed A/​C. This time they told me it was the compressor and would cost $ 640 to fix. When I pressed them about why it wasn’t diagnosed properly the first time they gave me some bullshit about tracer dyes in the recharge fluid, but it just seems like they weren’t very thorough.
I needed my A/​C so I pushed my trip back, and said to fix it. They said it would be done by 12 so I scheduled a ride to them by then. Turns out they didn’t know what was going on because when I called they said it wouldn’t be ready until late in the day. By then I had no way to get my vehicle.
Overall they seemed overpriced, just taking advantage of the fact that most people are from Boulder, and really are poor communicators. I’d save yourself some hassle and some money and go elsewhere.

I’ve been a longtime customer of Pellman’s Automotive and recommend them to my friends as a place you can trust to fix your car. (Now a lot of my friends go there too) I moved to Denver some time ago but still drive to Boulder to have them work on my car. What can I say, when you find a good mechanic, you stick with them. I really appreciate how they give me advice on what needs to be fixed now and what I can wait to do later. One time I did go to one of the big chain stores for an oil change because I was having trouble getting into Boulder and they tried to sell me a whole bunch of work I didn’t need. I’ll never do that again. They also do a great job explaining what is needed in a way that I can understand. I have also called them to ask some questions over the phone regarding my car and they are very helpful providing possible solutions for my problems.
Here are some other things I like about Pellman’s — they have free wifi and a really comfortable waiting room with a table I can work on. I often go to lunch with friends when I drop my car off for work and they do a great job calling or texting me to let me know what work is needed and when it is done. They also have a buy 4 get the 5th free oil change program. My last visit there was free because it was my 5th oil change which is always a great treat. Thanks for making my car service a good experience!

Over the past 20 years of being a car owner, Pellman’s has consistantly given me FIVE STAR SERVICE. I have used multiple car repair services and I know that they are top notch. I have been taking my 2002 Jeep Liberty to them for 3 years, now. Pellman’s is keeping the art of service alive through there attention to detail, follow through, and follow up.
MY MOST RECENT EXPERIENCE:
The last time I was there, it was because my engine needed to be replaced. Being faced with having to replace my engine was overwhelming, especially since we were still recovering from the Colorado Flood which destroyed everything that we owned but the clothes on our backs. They were caring and understanding of our personal circumstances. They really worked thru the process with us.
Since then, they have called to check in on how the car was performing and to schedule my follow up appointment to check over the work.
I would recommend Pellman’s to anyone and will forever be a customer. ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT!

Absolute lifesavers! My car had a major engine block mount issue while I was traveling in Colorado. They were incredibly helpful. They performed an examination of the issue and then let me now the cost of the expected course of action, as well as what the other options were, their cost and what would be any costs should things not go as planned. As expected with a car repair, something didn’t go as planned, but they went above and beyond to fix it… plus, they came right out and told me that extra effort was less work than they initially estimated… and they reduced the price down… Honesty unheard of at an auto repair shop!!! When I decided to sell my car and buy a new one to return to California with… they even gave me pointers! I really wish they were in my area back home… I would never go elsewhere. Never thought it would be an auto shop that would restore my faith in customer service and HUMANITY! Bravo!

Been living in Boulder for 15 years and have finally found an auto repair shop that does what it advertises. Namely maintain and repair my cars as needed. This is family owned business who are active within the community. Their reputation means a lot to them so they tend to err in favor of the customer. I have taken my Pacifica there for 2 years now on regular maintenance issues and one repair problem. Fair price with quality work with outstanding customer support. Bottom line is these folks care about their business and their customers. I recommend them highly.

I had a really bad experience with Pellman’s. Initially they seemed great, but things quickly turned south. They contacted me after my original rather scathing review I wrote a few months after deciding never to return. They wanted to try and amend things and make up for mistakes/​errors made. At least they seem willing to try and make things better for their customers. Maybe they’ll be better in the future.

Have been to Pellman’s several times and overall been very pleased with the service I’ve received. As far as I can tell the employees are honest and concerned with customer service. I did have a issue with service and some charges I didn’t completely understand, but Brad was happy to take some time to review my account, explain everything to me, and ensure that it would be fixed.
Everyone I have encountered there has been friendly and genuine. They understand my expectations and don’t try to sell me things I don’t want. Overall good service and I will be returning.

I have been to Pellman’s twice and was impressed with the customer service both times.
On my first visit, I was trying to get something fixed before heading out on a road trip. They couldn’t schedule me for an appointment before I left, but said they could try to fit me in between appointments, but might not be able to. Since that didn’t work for my time frame, they recommended me to another mechanic and called to make sure I could get in there. Awesome.
The second time, my windshield wiper quit turning and, when I called to schedule an appointment, they said that I could just drive it by and they’d check it out for me righ then because it was probably an easy fix. It took just a minute or two, and they sent me on my way for free.
While I was waiting for my turn, however, I heard them talking to another customer who had a much more difficult problem on his hands. They believed they had found his problem, but couldn’t reproduce it to be sure, despite having driven the car one hundred miles trying to figure it out, and the fix was a pretty expensive part. Before making the pricey repair, they wanted to be sure they knew what was up, so they told the customer what to do if it happened again in order to get the car running so he didn’t have to call for a tow. After all their time and effort that went into finding the problem, they didn’t charge the guy anything. Awesome again.
I totally recommend these guys if you’re looking for a place that won’t rip you off.

I took my car here twice. The first staffer was really nice & made sure I got a ride back to work & they quickly fixed an electrical problem for a reasonable price.
The second time it was stranded in a snow drift with a frozen battery & I went ahead and had it towed. I felt they over-​charged me & were condescending (testing the old battery even though I said I wanted it just taken out & disposed, then charging me – O’Reilly checks it for free). Over-​charged on the oil change. Tried a hard-​sell on the timing belt even though I asked them twice to look at the power steering leak before I budgeted that. (Power steering leak never got diagnosed or fixed because they were hell-​bent on doing the timing belt & didn’t address my immediate concern). They tried to tell me it was ruined when it was approaching time for scheduled maintenance.
All in all they’re fine, clean shop, reasonable quality, fast enough. I didn’t appreciate the extra charges and pushy sales attitude. Still can’t find a good mechanic in Boulder.

Called Pellman’s on my way to work (was referred to them by a trusted friend) and was able to drop the car there by 9:00 am. Was quoted at a reasonable $ 500 for the work that was to be performed and told that (thank God) I’d be able to pick it up by the end of the day. Drove out of there by 4:30 pm for $ 65 less than quote — they had further investigated AFTER having quoted me and were able to locate a better deal on parts.
That I call a trip to a mechanic a pleasant experience makes me wonder if I’m living in the twilight zone — I can now say that I’ve «got» a mechanic.

We’ve been taking our cars to Pellman’s for 10 years and we have had nothing but excellent, reasonably priced service. Dan and Brad are a pleasure to work with, they’re honest and extremely knowledgeable. We have an Xterra with 140k+ miles — it is still going strong under Pellman’s good care. They’ve serviced our Toyotas and now our Subaru. They always give all the information you need to make the best decision for your car and for your pocketbook. We wouldn’t take our cars anywhere else.
