These guys offer fantastic service and have a huge selection of gear to keep you well outfitted for your active lifestyle. They are a big Rab dealer so if you love that brand like I do, go here.
When they didn’t have the style of Rab jacket I wanted they called down to the Outlet in Denver and had them hold it for me.
Another item they offer a wide selection on is coffee mugs. After trying a few coffee travel tumbler mugs I bought one of their Stanley travel tumblers. It’s perfect: spill-​proof, one handed operation, comfortable spout.
Good service and a great selection. You can’t go wrong.

I want to support a local business that has knowledge, customer service and a variety of product that the other store may not be carrying, but Neptune mountaineering is not the place. I purchased a pair of La Sportiva Explorer approach shoe from them and after two weeks of moderate use the eyelets on the shoe have come apart and the tongue has ripped when putting on the shoe. This was quite the disappointment is the shoe quality from a brand that is know for rugged reliable well made shoes but not this model, buyer beware. Upon returning to Neptune to see if I would be able to exchange the shoe I was told that they would have to return to La Sportiva for warranty repair. Hold on these shoes are less than two weeks old, I really should be able to return the shoes, after all don’t you stand by and with the product that you choose to carry in your establishment. Well ok let’s do a warranty request with La Sportiva. Over two weeks later no shoes and no movement with La Sportiva or Neptune. Summer is here and in full swing and out almost $ 130 in what is a premier brand of approach shoes. Neptune stand with your customers and the brand you carry.

Cool place, the staff is very knowledgeable and are happy to chat and give advice. There’s also a lot of climbing books you’re welcome to sit and browse through to plan your next trip. Didn’t purchase anything there but rented crash pads, and had no issues with it.

One of the best climbing and adventuring outfitters I have ever come across. The museum of old climbing gear is worth the trip alone.
Normal prices with a few sale items. But really it is more about supporting an awesome local business that has been supporting climbers since before the days of Amazon Prime.
Amazing selection of items including some rad stuff I have never seen at other stores (I didn’t know there was a line of Stonemasters clothing).

Great store, good selection and service. I picked up an AT setup last December. Basically 25% off the whole thing. They did a great job boot fitting and took care of a warranty issue on my skins.

Not much to add to the other reviews but this is a Boulder classic and leader in the mountaineering field. Bought my first XC gear from them decades ago and my husband just updated his skateXC gear here last year. Gary is retiring and has sold the store but the local community hopes for few changes. My outdoorsy Boulder-​native son has bought much high end specialty gear here too. We have always had good service.

This place is famous even in Southern California. It’s the première gear shop for climbers n mountaineers in Boulder.
Bigger than Socal’s beloved Nomads but hey we don’t get a chance to ice climb much here. Crampons, Ice Axes. Scary looking stuff. Fun though:-) If I lived where the water froze into ice mountains maybe I’d want to conquer it too.
U can rent crash pads at Neptune. $ 15 first day $ 5 additional days. Their technical clothing selection is broad and fashionable.
It’s essential to wear the right clothes n look good while u play outside. Brands matter and when ur in Colorado it’s not about Gucci or Prada it’s the Prana’s and Patagucci (Patagonia) that rules. If u can afford it this is the place to come to get outfitted from head to toe.
If you can’t afford it this is still the place to come as they have a cool used gear area. You can buy someone else’s hand me down’s, save $$ and still look good.

What a great place, and conveniently I can walk there in 10 min! Not so centrally located, but it’s worth it!
As yet another outdoorsy resident of Boulder, I love the selection of gear that this place! Especially interesting is their clothing — local brands, US brands such as Ibex (my friend works there). They don’t have a huge selection of these slightly «alternative» brands, but way more than other stores who don’t carry them at all. Yes, the prices are basically full retail, which hurts, so you’ll have to save your allowance between visits. Or perhaps more likely, break into your piggy bank.
The have pretty much all the mainstay gear which would be in your garage/​closet for mountaineering, backpacking, climbing, skiing (not snowboarding though), etc. THe carry some gear that you won’t see at other shops, so this is a great stop if you are examining the ecosystem before making a purchase. Hopefully you’ll happily visit Neptune before making your more traditional stop at REI. Personally, I visited Neptune (out of stock) then Mont-​Bell and didn’t have to resort to REI. I do love REI as well of course…
Service can be a little slower than you might be used to at Whole Foods and REI where there seems to be 1 – 2 employees loitering in every isle. That certainly is an unreasonably high level of service. I’ve actually never seen anyone standing behind the climbing gear counter in Neptune, and it runs half the length of the store. Check out the clearance table at the center back of the store. INteresting, although somewhat obscure items there. Who knows, you might find a geode! I take a look every time I pass through.
All around the store are historical items from the past decades. Hanging above the newest ultra technical BD daypack are nylon rucksacks from the 70s…

Best climbing store in town.

I’ve been to plenty of uppity shops and I have to say that I appreciate the laid back vibe and lack of pretentious behavior here. No one pushes, no commission for sales, just knowledgeable, honest staff. Cool vibe, good sales and awesome presentation.
Extra kudos to Steffie for her excellent advice on women’s gear.

I admit it, I have a pet peeve about outdoor shops in prime climbing areas that don’t bother to stock mountaineering boots in smaller women’s sizes. REI’s Denver and Boulder (pre-​remodel) locations have both received letters on this topic (to their credit, they have responded). Both Neptune and Boulder Mountaineering are an exception and, consequently, have received many of my hard-​earned dollars for climbing and AT ski gear. In addition, Neptune’s Chuck Bird is a top-​notch boot fitter, so it’s worth paying him a visit before you give up on your $ 300+ boots or better yet, before you buy. Try finding that at REI.

I agree. Neptune’s is the place to be when in Boulder — they are on the way to Eldo! Tune your tellies, get some stove fuel, you name it. Then get the hoppiest beer outside of Boonville next door at the Southern Sun.
A little pricey, but worth investing in the local business. My pals for 15 years.

I love the old photographs, and the museum featuring the «old-​school» of mountaineering… it definitely brought up some fond memories with a smile.
Friendly and knowledgeable staffs willing to assist you in any shape or form.
Though some of the merchandise can be expensive, its definitely worth the price to drive from Denver to Boulder. It’s a MECCA for the hardcore adventures out there… I will definitely return perhaps to attend some of the cool events featured for the month etc etc.
Do check out this place when you can.

These people know their stuff. And they host all sorts of cool events (just saw the Environmental Film Festival there and drank lots of $ 1 beers and learned that prairie dogs don’t suck– who knew!?).
The owner is really active in the community, which I think is really important for a locally owned business.
The Nalgene bottles they sell there have a «mountain Margarita» recipe right on the bottle.
With all the displays of old gear, its like a museum too.

This is a place for serious mountaineering gear. The staff are experts, and friendly. Neptunes is a Boulder institution.
