Mamacitas

The portions were small $ 4 for a 4in round taco. We ordered a steak taco it looked like someone scooped out a glob of brown mash. I couldn’t tell if I was eating steak or hamburger their homemade red sauce had a funky taste. Their chili verde had a funny taste as well my recrimination, go to Taco Bell instead.

Well. i went here tonight with my dear hard working wife intending to have a pleasant and sensual evening and we received the opposite right off the bat. the brown hair bartender was ruder than a toddler in a candy store. She made no eye contact and ive seen better smiles with meth mouth. Further more she had all her teeny bop friends hanging around the bar and completely ignored our requests for anything. we got one fucking napkin each! where is that place?1938 ussr? The margaritas she made tasted like cough medicine and urine and she woudnt change the channel on the tv, which kept showing amputees of famous athletes, really what the fuck? Anyway. The tacos were great and i feel bad for the cooks who have to work with such fucking stupid service workers. i will never go there again but encourage the taco cooks to open their own restaurant sans the horrible bartender.

It was so expensive, the waitress took FOREVER to do everything, and it didn’t taste that great. Worst Mexican food experience ever. Don’t waste your money here

THE dankest fried Oreos. Hands down. 100 times better than Fat Shack! 3 Oreos for $ 2 !
Fajitas are pretty good too… steak!

Awful! Worst Mexican food I’ve had in ages! I ordered the Chicken Mole and got Chicken Verde. The chicken was BOILED and served in chunks on a plate with tasteless verde sauce dumped on top. It tasted so funky that I didn’t eat much of it. The black beans were out of a can and dry and the rice was bad too. My companion ordered a slice of key lime pie that didn’t even remotely resemble any key lime pie either of us had ever had… it had chocolate sauce poured on the plate and the pie on top. No key lime flavor anywhere. She complained and it was taken off our bill.
The initial service was quick but having the waiter adjust our bill sans the pie took forever as did the wait on the actual order of the heinous pie.
I enjoyed my glass of water. That was it.
NEVER. GOING. BACK!

I write a lot of reviews and this is the first time that I have wanted to give a place less than one star. Oh my god is this place bad, I could go into the details but it appears that everyone else already has. The owners of this establishment should hang their heads in shame. They should hire a new waitress too.

Came in because if groupon and was pleasantly surprise street tacos and chicken burrito was fabulous. Margs were great! Definitely a place to go on university hill. Too cold in dining area

Oooh Mamacitas. I will never ditch you guys because I love the damn enchiladas too much, but for heaven’s sakes, PLEASE get my enchilada sauce right! I have literally asked for GREEN sauce, no meat, and received instead, RED sauce with loads of meat. Huh?! Your cooks trippin?
Other than that, the staff is always very friendly and polite.
Atmosphere? Ok. The music has always been waaaaay too loud and blaring for my tastes, and it is always difficult to hear the person you are with, as well as the staff.

There seems to be a pretty across-​the-​board standard for the size of corn tortillas. I’ve ordered corn tacos from countless Mexican restaurants, bought different brands of corn tacos from the grocery store and even made my own and they all fall within the range of 6 – 8 inches in diameter. So call me crazy, but I assumed that Mamacita’s, a self-​proclaimed «authentic» Mexican restaurant, would serve this standard, authentic size of corn tortillas.
Wrong. I almost needed a magnifying glass to detect the sad little tacos placed before my hungry eyes. The only stomach I could ever imagine those pathetic little tacos filling would be that of a leprechaun who just had his stomach stapled.
My list of complaints does not even come close to ending there. I wish I had read some of these reviews before daring to venture into this college town establishment– every negative comment I read, some expressing bewilderment that the place is still in business, others wondering how they managed to mess up even the most basic of dishes, is completely accurate. I was blinded by the fact that the menu offered gluten and dairy-​free foods, and thus I ignored my primal instinct to look up the Unilocal reviews first. Never again.
The best way to rant my list of complaints may be to do so chronologically. First, as many other reviewers have mentioned, no free chips and salsa welcome you to your dining experience as they do at other restaurants. Second, our waitress completely forgot to bring our order to the kitchen for about 20 minutes and so we had to wait far too long than is reasonable to get our food. If the entrees we were brought were actually what we ordered and tasted amazing I could forgive the marathon wait time, but in no way was that the case. My boyfriend ordered enchiladas with green chili and received red enchilada sauce; a sauce that tasted mediocre at best. The generic brand of enchilada sauce from Target seems like it was hand crafted from a recipe passed down generation to generation in a Mexican family in comparison.
I ordered a sweet potato taco, the menu item that attracted me to Mamcacita’s in the first place, and a chicken taco and received a chicken taco and a steak taco (I don’t eat red meat). I informed the waitress of this mistake and she said she would bring me the sweet potato taco. However, she continued to bash down my sweet potato taco dreams when she returned with the horrible news that they were out. So I caved and said I’d accept a pathetic little shrimp taco the size of my thumb instead.
Their «happy hour» is nothing to be happy about. It seems so at first– a $ 3 margarita always sounds promising. There was so little alcohol in this teeny tiny margarita that it was not even remotely worth it. Once again, maybe it would make the aforementioned leprechaun with the stapled stomach tipsy. To top off this disappointing experience, there were no apologies and no discounts on the outrageously-​high bill. Sorry, but a chicken taco with hardly any chicken served on ¼ of a corn tortilla never needs to cost $ 3.00.

Stopped in for a very quick drink before a show next door. The service was quick enough but the drinks were SO tiny! The atmosphere was super casual. The sign on the door said under new management but I don’t know what the previous management was like so I’m sure that doesn’t help too much. Sorry. That’s all I got.

So close! Hill residents starved for good Mexican gave this another shot with family. Great remake very attentive owner there checking on us — tied dog up and they brought water and treat. Just a few suggestions and it’ll be perfect.
Great all day happy hour Sunday — good margs and food overall. Some underdone crunchy rice, chicken on street tacos underdone pink, guac could be better, chips looked like the small broken remnants out of a bag — staff was great but I’d not let them sit and smoke right in front of your patio seating.
Just a little quality control and it’ll be a favorite nearby.

If your Mexican food taste buds were calibrated by something the elementary school lunch lady slopped onto your tray on de Mayo while you were growing up in North Dakota, you might like this place.
However, If you’ve routinely eaten mexican food within 1000 miles of the border, this place will prove completely baffling. More baffling is that mamcita’s still exists. The only thing authentic is the name.

They have new owners and new management. The place has been transformed. I got lunch there yesterday afternoon and it was good. I got the El Pollo burrito with red sauce and it tasted good. The service was good too. All in all I paid $ 8.50 after tip for my lunch, pretty comparable to chipotle for a burrito, but the quality was better. This place is much better than its predecessor.

The rumors of Mamacitas grand NEW-​opening have been flying high for about a month now. New owners, management, chef, and staff and a new dedication to fresh, healthy food convinced me I should give this place a new try.
The new place is definitely an improvement, no denying that. Being that the students were gone for the summer, we were able to enjoy a lovely dinner out on the small but nice patio. The new staff were all friendly and helpful and the food was all nice and fresh.
We had some guacamole to start. It was not the best I have had but was clearly fresh and very tasty. The chips were also very good. For dinner, I had the chile relleno burrito smothered in green chile. I greatly appreciated that both the red and green chile were vegetarian. The burrito was good, although I wish the green chile was slightly more spicy or flavorful. I was able to help this, however, with the homemade hot sauces at the table.
It was nice that the menu specifies the inclusion of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. My study of the menu proved this to be true. The one thing to watch out for is that the refried beans have bacon in them (I am not sure why this is necessary but its the way it is). The black beans are safe and good though and the staff seems to be aware that veggy things need to be served with black instead of refried. Kudos for that!

I just dropped by here last week and it was just great. They are under new management and have a completely new menu. I would give em 5 stars but i’ll have to go back and try a margarita before I go all the way on the rating. I had the pelon which is a delicious hybrid of a relleno burrito and carnitas. The meat was so tender it melted in my mouth. I will definitely go back!

I recently ate at Mamacitas and was amazed at the quality and taste of the food. The restaurant has recently closed after 20 something years and re-​opened under a new management. The sauces were amazing. They had cilantro jalapeño and habenero that we ate on the chips and used as dipping sauce for the other menu items. The atmosphere is fun and the service was great. They have a Happy Hour with food and drink deals Monday-​Saturday 3−6pm and 10 – 12 am nightly and all day Sunday!!!

Wow. I guess I’m in the minority, but I think Mamacitas is a cool little spot. We hit it for a quick bite before a show at the Fox, and it fit the bill perfectly. Chips and salsa were nothing to write home about, but enchiladas were good and the poblano mole was even a step better than that; really tasty!
Service was fine, and we marked it down as a place we’d go back to if we wanted a quick beer and a bite on The Hill.

Overpriced ($ 11 – 12 for a plain chicken burrito), flavorless… horrible.
We were famished and sat down before looking at our neighbors’ plates or the menu. If you’re reading this, you don’t have an excuse so stay away!

Started surfing Unilocal after we’d sat down, to my dismay. We stayed, despite, wondering if the locals were somewhat spoiled, entitled college students. I think that’s probably 50% of the problem.
The food was lacking a bit in terms of flavor, but then again was on the healthier side and reminded me of some of the food we’ve gotten in Mexico over many trips.
Patio was small but fun. Inside, chairs were plenty comfortable. The wooden benches looked a little spartan, but come’on… this is REALLY splitting hairs.
Chips & salsa were complimentary. Guac was fresh but a bit bland, with huge chunks of avacado.
We had the fajitas — piping hot, tortillas were served hot and not store-​bought, from what I could tell. At least, they were pretty decent. Overall, I thought it was pretty ok.
Not going to blow you away, but calling it «inedible» is a flagrant use of artistic license. Granted, I wasn’t there that day, but from what I thought, things looked fine. I’d go again without a problem, and I’m generally a pretty picky bastard. :)

I was excited to eat Mexican on their patio (featured on their website.) Unfortunately the patio was quite small and being on the hill, in the midst of college intoxication.
Food– average. It seems to be healthier, but lacks flavor. I ordered Chicken enchiladas and thought the rice was a bit suspicious tasting (thank goodness I felt fine the following day.)
The customer service was fine but when I eat Mexican, it’s all about the food. It just didn’t do the job.
