History

Established in 1998.

What we are today– a unique clothing store with shoes and accessories and fun employees who love their job– isn’t too different from how we started. Back in 1991, our owner Debra Mazur decided to take advantage of her intuitive take on fashion and savvy business sense to start her own store: Clothes Encounters of the Second Kind.

Though she was a big city girl from New York, she chose to open her first store on quaint little Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado. Two and a half years later she opened Counter Evolution just down the block, providing her customers with early vintage in one store and trendy retro in the other.

Finally, in 1999 Deb decided to sell more and more new clothing and found the perfect location just one block off of Pearl Street Mall. It is here we became Common Era, and people loved our unique clothes and incredibly reasonable prices so much that in 2007 we opened up our Denver location on Platte street in the Highlands neighborhood.

Small boutique focusing largely on feminine accessories. Cute costume jewelry for cheap, plus some steampunk-​reminiscent pendants and earrings crafted by local artists for a higher markup. Phone cases for older models, clutches, scarves, shoes, hats, clips, hairbands, etc. Sale rack by the door included some fairly trendy end-​of-​season clothing items like a cropped jacket and a peplum dress in bold orange, and the varying sized umbrellas with adorable patterns like polka dots and hearts tempted me by the register. Both sales associates were friendly in making local suggestions and letting me get a closer look at the items in display cases.

While the style of the apparel is good. I was shocked to find a cardigan on the rack that I know for a fact is from forever 21. It was apparent that the label had been cut out and a new Common Era one was sewn in.
Talk about shady. Not to mention there as zero customer service offered. I won’t be purchasing anything from here.

In my opinion this boutique has such cute, chic stuff that is unlike most places in Boulder. They often have a wide selection earrings, there are racks for $ 5, $ 10, $ 15, to $ 20. Most of them are very trendy and the store has a lot of accent pieces (necklaces, bracelets, purses etc). Other than the $ 5 earrings I think that is about the cheapest anything in that store could get. The clothing is pretty expensive but keep what you’re getting is not mass produced and is often times unique. I have bought a few pairs of earrings, clothes and even a nice clutch as gifts for friends and they have loved everything. The owner is really nice and passionate about everything she sells in the store. If you’re a girl into fashion check this place out for sure.

This is one of the best shops in the Pearl district. I could have spent hours here! I got a really great, classic shoulder bag, a unique wallet, and some really affordable jewelry. I loved their clothes, but because I’m sort of on a budget I couldn’t splurge. They are affordable, though– a dress for $ 30, nice coat for $ 65, etc. I might have to go back before I fly home to LA! The girls who work in the store are really sweet, too. This place is a must if you’re looking for really cute, unique items!

Really? This place is nothing more than a glorified/​overhyped Urban Outfitters with bitchy staff. Your clothes are cheap and so is your hired help.

Wow, a Common Era in Boulder, I didn’t know there were two of these. We came upon this place while shopping down Pearl Street.
I would say that this location is a bit bigger than the one on Platte Street in Denver. Overall they offer the same things, earrings, necklaces, dresses, tops, belts, and other little things to dress a girl up. Often times I find myself looking and not buying, but on occasion I find very cool pieces that I must have. We found a paid of leaf looking earrings that were a must for only $ 10, great deal if you ask me.
Glad to see this store in Boulder and as with the Denver location I will always venture in to take a look if I’m in the area.

The Denver store is great, but the Boulder Common Era is FANTASTIC! I couldn’t even tell you everything that is in this store, but I could try. It’s the big store (as already mentioned, the other smaller store is in Denver).
Everything in the store is reasonably priced. From the trendy clothing, the fantastic accessories, the stylish scarves, etc.
The staff is friendly, and will leave you alone to shop as you please.
I kind of wish Colorado was more of a rainy location so that I could carry one of the pretty umbrellas here. I know, this store is filled with so many great things, and I notice the umbrellas? I’m a bit out of the ordinary.
Quality, girly merchandise. Would come back for sure.

What? Common Era is still here? Congratulations — you’ve passed the Boulder longevity test (as in, I came here often in college and nearly four years later, you’re still here).
I found tons of dresses that I wanted to try on. Only one was a success… but this is still a higher success rate than most. On top of it, it was on sale for $ 36 (and this is seriously an all purpose fancy or casual sort of dress) and I bought a pair of dangly owl earrings to round out the entire ensemble.
The employees consistently checked on me to take my fitting room gatherings into a fitting room.
Definitely worth repeat visits and their stuff is just as cute/​trendy as when I was in college.

Cute shop in a nice location though I was disappointed that no one offered to help me and even when I went to the counter to ask a question both the women working there continued their conversation (which was not about the shop) and I had to wait to ask my question. Cute stuff but ladies — help a girl out when she’s looking for a belt!

I love this store. I haven’t been here in a while because it is admittedly not that cheap, at least in my taste. But, every time I’ve been I’ve found stuff I love, whether I end up buying anything or not. They also have a good balance of women and men”s clothing, accessories, shoes, etc.

Ok so I would give this place 5 stars if they still carried men’s clothing like they once did. What they once had there for the guys were pretty awesome and the prices were not too bad. Good thing I got some clothes there before they got rid of the mens selection. They probably got rid of the guys section because guys that live in Boulder are probably not into the guys clothes they had here unless you are a hipster or gay (What?! There is a difference?) .Too bad.

Common Era boasts some very pretty fare.
Eclectic rings and jewelry, bright accessories, absurdly large purses, unique shoes, dresses and outfits with quality material is the main menu.
Unfortunately, Common Era also specializes in over-​pricing ($ 12 for a hair pin?), lack-​luster customer service, and creating an urge to browse everything in the store and not creating an actual urge to splurge and buy anything at all.

Common Era is a pretty neat place. They have decent prices (especially for a store on Pearl Street) on decent/​stylish clothes, and have some nice accessories. The people who work there could be friendlier (at least the ones I’ve experienced) but whatever. I feel this place would do better as just an accessories place (as in just jewelry & scarves & such) but maybe that’s just because I’ve never really been too keen on many of the clothes they stock. Someone more stylish or hip might think differently ;)! For bargain prices on stylish/​trendy clothes, it’s definitely a place to check out.

This is a large store, with a nice collection of clothing & accessories. I’m not sure yet how I feel about the dress I purchased here… It seemed a little spendy for the apparent quality. I’m hoping it will hold up. The dressing rooms felt tiny and needed to be unlocked first by a salesperson (who was friendly). Overall, seems like an ok place when you’re looking for something unique. Just a note, my receipt tells me that all sales are final, no exchanges, no refunds.

Cute boutique shops are usually too pricey or too cheap. Common Era has the best of both worlds — good quality, decently priced clothes plus most importantly, they are cute!
Since I’m not from the area, I’ve only been here twice but both times I’ve found items I love. The first time, my friend bought a very sexy date dress and I got some cool shades and earrings. This second time, I got this awesome coat for $ 35. It’s a little too trendy for everyday wear but its made out of warm, soft material and is one of my favorite recent purchases.
I plan to make this a regular shopping pit-​stop when I’m in Boulder.

You’ll find a mix of vintage and cutting edge fashion for both men and women at this East Pearl boutique. The funky abounds from jewelry and sunglasses, to hats, wigs and shoes. The quality is often not the highest but the prices aren’t the highest either, so it all works out. CE 2000 is a great place to shop if you’ve had it with seeing the same old styles in every shop you enter. It’s also a great place to shop for costumes, because of the large and eclectic selection.
