Description

Specialties

We preserve the historic Vilna Shul and perpetuate an enduring Jewish identity in Boston through education, community partnerships, exhibitions and the celebration of holiday and life-cycle events. We are dedicated to fostering awareness and inspiring historical, cultural and spiritual connections.

History

Established in 1991.

The Vilna Shul is the last remaining immigrant era synagogue in the City of Boston, a place that in the 1930’s had more than 100,000 Jews and fifty synagogues. The Shul is located on the North Slope of Beacon Hill, which in 1920 made it part of the Old West End. The two-story brick building is modeled after medieval European synagogues but has some distinctive features including; the L-shaped sanctuary on the second floor that provided separate seating sections for men and women in keeping with Orthodox tradition, three giant skylights flood the sanctuary with natural light and impart a unique spiritual quality to the space. With a grant from Partners in Preservation, a partnership of American Express and the National Trust for Histoirc Preservation, we recently uncovered the rear wal of the women’s section to expose to incredible murals. You should add this to your itinerary.
