Pucker Gallery was established in Boston in 1967. The Gallery exhibits an eclectic and sophisticated collection of contemporary art by over 50 international artists on five floors or our 171 Newbury Street location. The collections include paintings, photography, works on paper, sculptures, Judaica and ceramics.

Business Owner

Bernard H. Pucker is the Founder, Owner and Director of Pucker Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied History and English Literature at Columbia University and received a Master of Arts degree in Modern Jewish History from Brandeis University. Mr. Pucker is a Trustee of Facing History and Ourselves; a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Publication Society; an Advisory Board member of the Terezin Chamber Music Foundation; a member of the Board of Directors of the Boston Center for Jewish Heritage; and a member of the Arts and Letters Council of The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies. Pucker Gallery was founded in 1967 in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood and has exhibited a significant collection of contemporary art for more than four decades.

They have such pretty artwork! Most of the vases and wall art are fine art but pretty enough for home décor. My favorite wall arts are the still lifes by Paul Caponigro and pastels by Mallory Lake. I also love the vases by Ben Owen. They have very important statements to say as artists and in some cases, historians, like Samuel Bak. However, for the everyday buyer, I think Pucker Gallery gets 5 stars for being the best home decorating place. Each artwork will be framed as part of your purchase. Most items cost as much as a used car, though. Just saying.

I bought an etching from Pucker 20 years ago. Although I don’t have much in the way of discretionary funds, their staff is always extremely polite when I come in to browse.
And when I mention a visit to the top floor to look at their Inuit collection (now on exhibit), they are always very helpful. Unlike some of the other galleries on Newbury Street, they never cop an attitude. At the same time, the probably feature the best art in Boston.

Thus is the home gallery of Holocaust survivor Samuel Bak. Tucked into a basement on Newbury street, I often used Bak’s work in graduate school to discuss the meaning of broken symbols after catastrophe. His work is a wonderful testament to healing but more importantly remembering after comprehension seems impossible.
The gallery is laid out on four different levels but the story each painting tells grabs you, if you allow your self to let go.

Tucked underneath a Payless shoe store on Newbury St., this gallery features the incomparable pottery of Brother Thomas who makes such beautifully delicate large Asian-​inspired pieces with crazy glazes that it will change your world view.
Other works by local artist Samuel Bak, Joseph Ablow (my old painting teacher), and Austrian painter Hundertwasser are also on prominent display. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. If you ask nicely they will take you on a tour of all four floors of the place. It’s loaded with African, Native American, and Asian ceramics. You can even browse the backrooms where they work.
I love this gallery the best out of all the Newbury St. galleries because it has so much stuff and the staff really know their art. No attitude about you not buying anything either, they just love art. If I were rich I’d buy from these guys.
