ProEx Physical Therapy – Back Bay

Great place! They are knowledgeable, detailed and kind. I hurt myself training for the Boston Marathon and they help me me back on my feet and running in time! They are in-​network for many insurances companies, but beware if you need a referral, my doctor’s office told me they were not «in-​network» as it was not in their kickback network. Worth the call to your insurance hands down.

Stephanie and Hannah developed a program for me that not only strengthened the muscles related to my knee injury, but also helped to engage and strengthen muscles in my core and back. I work as a professional ballroom dancer and was able to dance with little to no pain after about 6 weeks of visits. They’ve done an excellent job in giving me a program that was catered to my needs. Matt runs an excellent team, all the therapists, assistants, and even the receptionist have great pride in their work and patients are always welcomed with genuine kindness.

I was really disappointed. I have been to PT at multiple places over the years. This was not a good experience. Nice people, new facility, poor execution and experience. I had an assistant go through the motions each time. No expertise excerpt the first evaluation. Even after u made it clear I would do warmup and simple, unassisted exercises by coming early, or on the way in my gym around the corner, they still didn’t do any more work that requires assistance. They didn’t follow up on emails. My physician gave me a lot is other facilities and I’ve been very happy and improving once I switched over.

The entire staff here are so very friendly, competent and helpful thru the entire process from scheduling the first appointment to showing you how to do the excercises properly. I highly reccomend this PT practice.

Matt, and all of his staff were so incredibly helpful with my recovery after I injured my foot running and was on crutched this past summer. The first day I got there I was in terrible pain, I didn’t want to do anything, and everything hurt. But by the second week in, I was looking forward to my appointments and getting all of the help to get back to normal.
The way everyone is so nice to each other and all of the young people who work there are so smart and listen and modified things based on what worked for me. Kelsey was the greatest, and I hope she ends up working there full time after she graduates!
I would consistently call ProEx to talk to Matt if I ever had a problem or pain, before calling the doctor because he was so easy to get ahold of and would give good advice and help me know the difference between discomfort and pain. I learned a lot about how to do so many things differently, that didn’t even have to do with my injury.
I highly recommend Matt and his team to anyone with any problem, as they are really the best. They are the most flexible with timing you’ll find in Boston and the location is prime, right next to the t station. I will always send my friends and family to Matt! Keep up the great work ProEx!

Short of setting up a ProEx shrine, lighting daily incense, and conjuring up some physical therapy chant, I’m a big fan: D.
Months of living in my unsupportive Sorel winter boots (and not realizing they were wreaking havoc on my feet) had led to my left foot hurting constantly after standing for more than 15 minutes, or walking even half a mile. I’d throw on my sad face and beg people for their seats at bars, wince at the thought of having to walk for more than 10 minutes at a time, and wonder why my foot hurt even in those super unfashionable, but unbelievably supportive sneakers.
This led me to three months with a podiatrist who had recommended custom made orthotics, generic orthotics, and had put me in a walking boot/​AirCast, which ended up causing pain /​Posterior Tibial Tendonitis in my right foot. Follow that with a useless visit with an orthopedic doctor who dismissed my pain as «it’s probably plantar fasciitis, just stretch it and it’ll go away», and left the room before I even got a chance to respond or ask questions. Three months of pain, and one too many useless visits that culminated in little to no change.
Enter, my Google search and friends who are chiropractors, doctors, physical therapists, and former victims of sprained ankles and other foot problems. The one common piece of advice I got from my friends, and my dearest friend, Google, was simple: GO TO PHYSICAL THERAPY.
I’m glad I listened. My pain was going nowhere fast, and quite frankly, I was starting to look like a mom who wore Saucony’s to every social event, with everyone asking why I always looked like I had just worked out. I was THIS close to putting on mom jeans, getting a mom haircut, driving a minivan, and just tossing any chance of looking cute and put together in my 20’s into the dumpster.
None of my friends seemed to have gone to physical therapists who were still working in Boston, so with no real recommendations, I turned to Unilocal and randomly found ProEx.
I was assigned to Stephanie Novello, who is one of the best physical therapists I’ve ever been to (unfortunately, I’m no newbie to PT, having screwed up several joints in the past). She’s adept at evaluating your injury, understanding where you are in your spectrum of pain, and where you want to get to – back to your favorite physical activities, or just back to being pain-​free. Having been a collegiate athlete who had gone through the trials of PT herself, she’s keenly aware of any patient’s complex frustrations with their injury. It’s usually a long road to a full recovery, but she’s great at providing you with a roadmap to your end goal, and the sound advice and momentum you need to get there.
About 6 weeks of a hip/​calf/​foot stretching and strengthening regimen later, the pain in my foot has become far more manageable (who knew so many parts of the body could be linked to pain manifesting in one place?), with far less frequent flare-​ups of pain. I’m on my way to running again, something that was unimaginable 6 weeks earlier, without me wincing or having to stop frequently and limp back home in pain.
I have to thank Steph for all her help in getting me far down the road to recovery, and the whole ProEx team (Shaneka, MK, Sarah) for being the cast of upbeat cheerleaders needed for the weeks of seemingly mundane exercises that are needed to strengthen the parts of your body that have weakened due to injury. We had some weekly deep convos about the latest and greatest on Netflix, after all. And big shoutout to my PT twin Jeff B. who not only graduated PT before me, but beat me to Unilocal reviewing ProEx: D.

First class all the way. I walked into ProEx Back Bay after a grade 2 ankle sprain with a weak ankle and poor balance and, after other less-​than-​steller therapy experience, I feared the worst: 2 months of physical therapy that would be «only so helpful» and leave my ankle nowhere close to normal.
Fast forward a month: I’ve «graduated» from ProEx and my ankle is like new.
Stephanie, Sarah, Shanika, and the ProEx team were everything I wanted in a physical therapist. They were knowledgeable about my injury and anatomy, challenged me in an encouraging way, and generally were a blast to be around. I’ll miss my Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons there as much for the training as for the fun times and conversations. They made me feel comfortable and confident from day one, and, most important, they helped me get results.
If you need a physical therapist in Boston, look no further. These are the guys to go to.

At ProEx physical therapy, the staff gives you the time, attention, and education that you need to start feeling better. My initial impression was that PT was simply a middle step on the road to seeing an orthopedic, and I thought why not just skip this part. But I’m so glad that I did not, because at ProEx I was educated on what my pain was, where it was coming from and how it could be fixed. It was so comforting knowing that the therapists here had the time to spend focusing on my issue and how to resolve it long term, but also the knowledge to discuss next steps if necessary. On top of that, the staff are extremely attentive and helpful and had my best interest in mind. I not only started to feel better, but I when I finished my time there, I left knowing how I was going to stay feeling my best.

After an over-​zealous attempt at the splits during a yoga class, I heard a 3-​pop clicking sound in my right glute/​upper hamstring area. After trying to work through it and self diagnose myself, I seemed to be getting nowhere. I booked an appointment with Matt McManus PT and he was just wonderful. After a couple of questions and quick stretches, he was able to diagnose me with sciatica and proceeded to answer all the questions I had about it– and this was only during our initial consultation. Matt was very empathetic and his attitude gave me hope that I would be able to recover from this. He was a (legitimate) source of much needed motivation, to say the least. I wish I could continue attending this location but unfortunately it is too far from where I live. So all in all, lovely staff, extremely clean equipment and studio and from what I saw during my time there– proven results.

The staff are all amazing. They stand for getting to know you as a person and not just a patient — and keep true to their words. They remember you immediately by your first name, constantly show that they care deeply about your conditions and context, know what they are talking about (important!), and truly work with you (not just on you) to help make you better. Seriously — if you’re looking for a PT — look no further. These guys are as awesome as it gets.

I tried this place based on Unilocal reviews, so I figured I should pay it forward and leave a review myself. I have been very pleased with my experience here. I have primarily worked with Stephanie, who is excellent. I have a few stubborn issues with my lower back and legs and she has done a great job of explaining what she is doing (both stretching and stretching). She is clearly very knowledgable, professional and personable. I can actually say that about all of the staff at Proex back bay and would highly recommend them.

I got a staff infection after a meniscus transplant, resulting in 6 knee surgeries over a short 3-​month time. Matt and the team went above and beyond to help me get back on my feet.
As a former collegiate athlete and a banged up body, I’ve had a lot of physical therapists, and can honestly say these guys are second to none! My program was tailored to my needs.

Matt and the team at ProEx were great to work with while recovering from cycling repetitive injury issue. They were totally professional at all times and were focused on what I needed to get out of my time with them.
They started with a quick, easy evaluation of my injury. They put me on a stretching and strengthening regimen and after 6 visits I was feeling much better. After my visits I am able to manage the issue by continuing the exercises I learned at ProEx.

As a corrective exercise specialist, I am extremely picky in who I go to for professional work to be done on my body. Immediately I was impressed with Matt McMannus. He takes the thinking out of billing by working with my insurance agency.
Many physical therapists with start you off with some heat, then take off for 15 minutes and give you a cookie cutter program for you to perform on your own. This is of no value to me nor anyone else. ProEx practices manual therapy, which in my experience is much more effective in immediate pain relief, plus you feel you’re getting more «bang» for your buck.

ProEx was a great experience from the moment I met Shaneka at the front desk, to my evaluation and therapy plan with Stephanie, to my workout rehab with their Technician (Kelsey was the best).
Stephanie Novello, DPT quickly diagnosed the cause of my tendonitis in my ankle (it was tightness in my calf — go figure), and put a plan in place for rehab and assured me I would be running in 1 month. I did not think that was possible with the pain I was experiencing, but 1 month later… there I was running again.
You will be in good hands with Stephanie at ProEx.

Throwing my back out was agony. Not only the pain, but the dissapointment that I couldn’t continue running to train for all the 5K’s that I am signed up for. My doctor suggested physical therapy. I chose ProEx Physical Therepy because it was the closest one to my office that took my insurance. I am so glad I ended up here. I have not had any experience with physical therapy so I can’t really compare them to anyone else. But now I can say that I LOVE physical therapy based on my experience at ProEx! Shaneka answered the phone and took all my info and found a convenient time for me to come in. When I came in she thoroughly explained all the paperwork and how the insurance process would work. She took care of all of that for me. I sat down with Matt and explained everything about my injury. He really listened to me and I got the impression right away that he really knows his stuff. He and Kelsey have been helping me go through all the exercises that Matt lined up for me. Kelsey is great at teaching the correct form for each one and helping you make small adjustments as you go. The facility is super clean, bright and modern. There is a great view of Copley Square. There is definitely a welcoming, comfortable, friendly relaxed vibe at this place. They were not only concerned with getting my back healed but also gave me lots of tips to use for avoiding injury and being a better runner. After a few weeks at ProEx I am back to my regular running schedule and think I am in good shape to hit my goal at my 1^st 5k of the season despite the set back of my injury. I hope I don’t have any more injuries anytime soon, but if I do, I will definitely go see my new friends at ProEx.

Matt is great, all the Physical Therapists are very good. Great atmosphere and good support. Matt was not able to resolve my back issue as it is structural and will require surgery. That being said he got my core muscles in good shape prior to the surgery. I come back and let you know how the post surgery PT went.

I have had a great experience with Matt and the team at ProEx Back Bay. I am recovering from surgery and during my recent move to the area I seriously aggravated my injury. ProEx got me in and quickly put me on a program to get me in much better place physically. I never wait to start a therapy session, the staff is friendly and professional and I feel a million times better than I did when I started.
Matt explained to me in detail what was wrong and how we were going to fix it, taking detailed notes about my symptoms and continuously reevaluating my progress. I actually look forward to my sessions, not only because I can feel myself getting stronger, but because I enjoy the friendly environment that ProEx offers its clients.
