Midnight Movers

I booked a move with this company during the busy period of early September. The owner spoke with me about my moving needs and scheduling was quick and painless. The quote was reasonable.
The move-​out was uneventful — the movers were very nice, worked hard, and quickly. They called asking if they could arrive several hours after what was scheduled, which was fine with me.
Unfortunately, the move-​in (which took place on a separate day) was full of problems. We scheduled the move for first-​thing-​in-​the morning. I communicated very clearly that I had to leave for work at noon, and I was assured that would be no problem. I waited for them from 7:30 onwards, but they did not show up until just before 11 — an hour before I had to leave. And, they had not gotten parking permits (despite my paying them to do so — although they did not charge me since they never got them) so time was wasted parking and getting the truck settled. There was also a mix of my items and someone else’s items in the truck, and several times they carried other peoples’ belongings into my place. I ended up standing by the door watching what they brought in and saying ‘that’s not mine’. This wasted more time, and the movers were frustrated and apologetic. They were not done when I was supposed to leave for work, I waited an extra half hour, still not done, so I had no choice but to pay them before the job was done and leave them alone to finish the job. I was not totally comfortable with this, but I had no choice.
Arriving home that evening, I walked into a chaotic scene. One of my belongings was sitting out on the sidewalk, it must have been forgotten out there. They had taken a light fixture down to get my couch in, and that was not reinstalled. The legs were taken off my couch, they were not reattached, and their screws were missing (I never found them and had to search for replacements). My desk was broken and the glass on a framed art print was broken. Stacks of boxes sat just inside of the door, all of the room labels and ‘fragile’ labels ignored. Some boxes were crushed under the weight of the tall stacks. And, a couple of my things had not been delivered.
I contacted the owner who assured me they had the missing items, and he delivered them to me a couple of weeks later, and took the broken glass frame to be replaced and brought it back to me. It took a long time and a lot of texts/​emails, but OK, he took care of these things. But the broken desk remains unresolved. The owner asked me to send him links to comparable desks, which I did. He wrote me back saying ‘that seems very expensive for a small desk that was not very strong to begin with’ … just pushback, no proposed solution. At this point, wanting to just move on we settled on a reimbursement amount that was disappointing to me, but better than nothing.
That was 3 months ago and I still have not received the check I was promised. I have sent probably 20 texts and emails in the interim. For a while I got replies (and promises to send the check), but since early December I have not gotten any response. In my opinion, this is unbelievably unprofessional. On top a very stressful move-​in, this company has wasted my time ever since and not followed through on their promises. After this ordeal, there is absolutely no way I would recommend them. MM, are you reading this? Can you please send me the money you owe me?
