Karma Yoga Studio -- Newbury

If your thing is to spend your money so that a judgey vegan yoga teacher can have you as a captive audience about veganism, and then go on to audibly sigh directly at your sub-​perfect form… this place is your jam. The teacher’s name was Fiona. I was kind of shocked by that one. I don’t think I’ve ever had a more intrusive class, over four years of yoga at three different cities. She repeatedly told students to move their mats to where she wanted them to be. Just let people be where they choose. Why is it such a big deal? I’m not so sure about telling yogis that all meat based diets are unhealthy and ‘bad’. What people eat is a fundamental thing to their identity, often deeply rooted in their culture and background. To say that you are an example of health as a guide to meat eaters… well, what if someone said: «I’m really black and white about my gender identity, and I think it’s bad to be genderfluid or gay. Follow my example of only having sex with the opposite sex! It’s healthier.» Yep, avoiding this teacher. Lots of control issues here. Not a good vibe.

I like to work yoga into my fitness routine once a week so that my muscles get that extra TLC through various stretching, posing, and deep breathing techniques. My class at Karma was just what my muscles needed after day hunched over my laptop.
My only gripe with the studio is that I originally signed up for a warm vinyasa class where the room would be set to 85 degrees, but I didn’t feel any sort of heat during the class. It might be that because of the huge studio space and the smaller class size the heat was just distributed all over the room but it was definitely not as warm as the class description said it would be.
Also, throughout the duration of class, we could hear the energetic voices and upbeat music of the class Xtend was having right below us. It didn’t bother me so much, but if you do like your yoga on the quieter side consider checking out a non-​evening class instead.

Karma Yoga Studios, Newbury Street is the best. Highly recommend this school and yoga to anyone looking for an exercise program. The staff and teachers are very friendly and genuinely caring. The studio space is spacious and clean. Making new friends and stretching its all good. Joining and attending this studio is, honestly one of the best decision I have ever made, wish I started years ago. I so needed this, soon to be 65 and just finishing 10 years as my dad’s sole caregiver I was as stiff as one could be. Now leaving each class feeling so relaxed, loose and with an overall comforting, peacefull feeling.
New to yoga, the first thing that struck me, is that it’s an incredible workout, way more challenging than anticipated. After 2 months, I started seeing changes for the better, now after 7 months my lower back stiffness and pain are well on the mend with noticable weekly improvements in my posture, balance, strength, feeling younger, etc. Recently opted for the yearly membership and can only image how well I will feel next year.
It’s like having a personal trainer at times, I am very appreciative for the assitance all the instructors provide. The variety of the different types of classes gives one a chance to personalize a routine. Add in the meditation and Saturday’s Reiki session, it just doesnt get any better.

Amazing, amazing yoga studio. I fell in love after a week into my Groupon trial! I loved it so much that I decided to join with their 3 month for $ 250 deal!
The studio offers a variety of yoga styles, like vinyasa, power yoga, jivamukti, yin, and restorative. Even better, the studio has so many great instructors! You definitely know you’ve walked into the right studio when the instructors go up to you and ask you for your name and remember you! What I also love about the studio is that the classes are pretty intimate, with about 10 yogis practicing alongside with you. I’ve gotten so obsessed with practicing here after work that I consider this my happy hour (and a half) and skip out on happy hour drinks with friends, whoops.

I highly recommend Fiona and David’s classes. I always feel so refreshed afterwards!

The studios are really spare, usually there are 6 – 10 people in a class, so you have more than enough space) It’s clean.
Really liked warm yoga by Ali Singer, she is cool and very nice, also she picks great music, you’ll never get bored.
Fiona is a professional, she is paying attention to everyone in a class and helps to get into the pose)))
The only thing that is not cool at all is that-​they don’t have shower.

nice place but inconsistent teachers — some are awesome, some are very young and dont seem to have a lot of yoga knowledge — Id select the teacher and class you take carefully as some are just reciting same old cues — I can follow a video at home for that — if you are an advanced yoga practioner Id ask for recomendations for teachers from the studio — personally I prefer someone with experience over someone who is younger and not mature

Had a great experience here this week and looking forward to coming back thanks to the $ 25 unlimited special! Beautiful, serene space. Very clean and affordable. Really happy I came!

So let me begin this review by saying great space, and great instructors. BUT I enrolled in auto monthly membership and I canceled it because I moved. This business has STILL been withdrawing 125 dollars from my checking account for 3 fucking months. I called their main studio in Harvard and was PROMISED it would be reversed and my account would be refunded and surprise it wasn’t. I check my bank account today to find out that it was just charged another 125 for a membership that I don’t use. I am furious!

Very clean studio with two spacious and well lit rooms. I like this place much more than Back Bay yoga because it’s less busy and classes are far less crowded.
They offer classes on the weekends with live music and they’re so zenful and peaceful!

Beautiful space! Everything about it just feels serene and peaceful. I’ve been to a lot of yoga studios, and Karma Yoga has been my favorite studio since practicing in Bali, Indonesia. There are a good variety of classes at different levels and varying times, which I appreciate. I look forward to coming back.
I would like to see Karma offer community yoga classes. Yoga can get quite expensive, and I would love to be able to bring my budget conscious friend here as well.

I am new to yoga and have only been doing it for about two months. I am in my early fifties and not at all physically fit. I started at Back Bay Karma Yoga Studios at the end of August, taking the Yin Yoga and Gentle Yoga classes and am now totally committed to the practice of yoga! The teachers are thoughtful, helpful, supportive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Suzanne is the studio manager and does an amazing job of making sure everyone feels welcomed and appreciated. She listens to suggestions and straightens out any glitches. Recently I asked her if it would be possible to add a gentle yoga weekend class and she has been working hard to make it happen. The space is enormous, the materials are clean and new and the facilities are always in excellent condition. The walls are painted a warm yellow and there are skylights in the ceiling, so when I am in class I feel as though I am a million miles away from the city, completely relaxed, wrapped in this golden light. I love Karma Yoga Studios and feel very fortunate that my introduction to yoga has been such a wonderful, positive experience.

Been practicing yoga for the last 15 years in Boston. Karma has been the best one yet… good ambiance, open and sun filled space, knowledgeable teachers (love Fiona), excellent customer service (Suzanne the manager and other folks at front desk are always very welcoming). I have been to baptistte, open doors, back back yoga… and they were ok for a variety of reasons. I Highly recommend Karma… love the place.

Fiona’s Jivamukti class is such a pleasure to attend. She is amazing.

I purchased a deal for $ 49 for one month unlimited yoga at this studio and I really enjoyed it. I was only able to use it for 2 weeks since I was out of the country for the other half of the time, but I still thought it was worth it.
The studio is very nice since it’s new. There is one larger room and a smaller room, but both rooms have skylights and lots of windows. It’s located on the third floor of Trident so it’s very easily accessible by T or bus.
The instructors all have their own style and my favorite is the Jivamukti yoga. I love the china gel that they apply bc it’s so tingling and refreshing! Sometimes it can take a while for them to check you in, but I like everyone who’s worked their so far.
There are two bathrooms and the studio supplies blankets, blocks and straps. It’s a very nice studio and I really enjoyed coming here.

First let me say, the majority of the instructors here are amazing. I was a member at the South End studio for over 2 years before it closed, and loved the teachers so much that I moved to Newbury to follow them, despite the hike in my monthly membership. After being a member at the new studio for about 6 months, I decided to cancel my monthly membership for multiple reasons, including the steep monthly price and that I’ll be traveling quite a bit this summer.
Here’s what happened when I tried to cancel my membership, after being a member for over three years. I sent an email at the beginning of May to request the cancellation begin in June. According to their website, email is the best way to bring up account matters, and THEY WILL RESPOND WITHIN 24 hrs. 1 week goes by, and I go to a class at Newbury St. I bring up my cancellation request with the woman who checks me in, and she makes a note of it and says she will ask the manager/​owner to take care of it. Another week goes by, and I hear nothing. I send another email. No response. I go into the studio for another class and speak with the SAME woman, who says, oh yes, I have a note here to talk to the owner tonight about it. Great! I say. Another week goes by, and nothing. I send a third email, and no response. My account is charged for June.
Despite being a yoga studio, this is still a business providing a service for payment, so I expect some sort of customer service. Karma Yoga Studio is EXTREMELY lacking in this area. I expect more from a business to which I’ve been a loyal, paying customer for over three years. I will happily find the other locations where the instructors I respect teach, and continue to practice with them. After receiving my refund (or taking care of this directly through my bank), I will not return to Karma Yoga Studio.

I started off going to Back Bay Yoga when I first moved to Boston last spring, and switched to Karma when one of my vegan friends suggested it back in November. I’m all for the physical benefits of yoga – it is my primary mode of exercise, after all! – but I was tired of hearing yoga teachers casually mentioning their consumption of animal flesh, so Karma is the perfect place for me. The owners are vegan and big supporters of animal rights (they operate an animal shelter out of their own home!), but they’re totally low key about it, so if you’re not a vegetarian no one’s going to look askance on you (and I promise I won’t either!) Maybe I ask a lot of my yoga teachers in this respect, but I want to learn from them, and every teacher at Karma is someone I’d like to emulate.
So on to the yoga itself: I usually go to Jivamukti classes, and all the teachers are warm and genuinely friendly and totally know their stuff, but that goes for every other class and teacher at Karma too. I’ve been to many studios in Boston and elsewhere over the past year, and in terms of knowledge, personality, and style, the teachers at Karma are uniformly excellent, and I can’t actually say that about most other studios.
This is the place to be if you want to practice in big gorgeous airy studios with plenty of space between the mats. Everyone is lovely here, from the desk staff to the teachers to your fellow yogis. I really can’t say enough good things about this place – it’s yoga for yoga’s sake, peace and connection over profit, which is actually why I’m a little bit worried – I want Karma to stay in business! I know they’re still ironing out some kinks since they only opened last fall, but I’m inclined to cut them all the slack they need given the awesome teachers and beautiful space.

I just started going here recently. I’ve been practicing yoga on and off for some time and have experienced many many classes at different places. At Karma Newbury I have taken two amazing classes so far with David Magone. I think he’s an amazing instructor. The classes are challenging and invigorating while also being peaceful and inspiring. I can’t speak for other instructors yet but I plan on trying out other classes as well. As far as the facilities, everything is new and seems nice: two spacious studios, nice large windows, clean bathrooms, friendly staff
