Grey’s Fabric and Notions

LOVE this store!
I go here sometimes to grab lining fabric and things, but man, for a small fabric store, who knew they would hold so many options from rainwear fabrics to silks! They give you a card that they punch, and when all ten spots are punched, you get $ 10 off. How sweet is that?
I will definitely visit again someday.

As a designer, living around the corner from Grey’s is the best and worst thing I could ask for. At a moment’s notice, I can walk to Grey’s and pick up high quality fabric ranging from the very basics (denim, anyone?) to the most quirky, elaborate prints one could want but never thought of.
My wallet does not appreciate the convenience, but my love for design very much enjoys and needs it. Boston, admittedly, does not have the best selection of fabric stores. They are few and far between and the options you do have are not the best. Grey’s is the diamond in the very, very rough. What they lack in enormous fabric selection they gain in a carefully curated selection of textiles which cater to a number of projects you may be working on, whether it be a funky skirt, a fun apron, vibrant pillows, or a pair of jeans.
Again, the selection is not vast, but it is inspiring, and as a designer, I want nothing more than to be inspired. Grey’s does not stop at inspiration, though. They offer classes to people who have minimal experience to those of us who have some skill but lack in areas in which they want to improve. It is this care for the customer and the designer in all of us which allows Grey’s to exceed its expectations as a small business and become the gem that it is.

Solidly impressed. Will travel miles to come back.

I stopped by Grey’s Fabric today to grab some replacement buttons for my coat. I was stumped a bit at selecting my choices, and the owner gave me some super helpful and super creative suggestions. I thought my visit to her store was worth it based on her advice alone — highly recommend this!

I found Grey’s online when I was looking for a class to learn how to sew. This shop is great! Sarah the owner was also our instructor. The class is limited to 6 students which is so nice to have 1 on 1 time to ask as many questions as you would like. The class runs in two sessions both three hours. The first class we made a pillow, I was very happy with my 1^st sewing success. The second class we made a tote bag which was also really cool. It was great seeing how everything comes together. I was encouraged after these classes to really start to look into what else I can make with my new skills. It helped me get familiarized with a sewing machine. Sarah was such a help when I made oh so many mistakes but I really learned a lot from her. You can tell she is very passionate about what she does. Also during our class customers would come and do a little shopping and the way she interacted with all of them and giving advice makes you feel really welcomed in the store. When arriving make sure you look down because the store is on the ground level. I had never been to 450 Harrison and didn’t exactly know where I should be looking. There is some street parking on the weekends for free (on some side streets) but also there is a lot to park in as well ($ 10 for 2hrs. I think). I hope you go and take a peak in Grey’s Fabric! So happy I did!

I love this place. Sarah and her staff are amazing. They rarely judge me when I ask novice sewer questions and are always super helpful.
Yes, it’s a little pricey, but the quality of service is why I go. Also, whenever I’ve taken a class here, Sarah let’s me bring wine :)

I picked up some fabric for my daughters’ upcoming sewing class yesterday. I don’t know much/​anything about sewing & Sarah (Grey) was there to help us identify the type of fabric that we needed for the projects they’re doing. We found fabrics that we liked very easily. I’m not in tune with costs for nice fabrics, but these were in line with what I expected based on a visit to a few online sites (we bought some quilting weight patterns @ $ 10.50/yd.).
I found the shop to be warm & pleasant. There were a great deal of sewing-​specific accessories around. Sarah helped us pick out some matching thread for the fabrics as well. She even shared some nice cookies at the register. Based on our purchase, we got a credit for future purchases that is nice.
Store is located in cool crafty section — SOWA. I haven’t really been there before, but it’s a neat area to check out & I bet it’s a fun scene on market weekends.

This was a really cute store with a unique selection of fabrics that you can’t find at many sewing (quilting) shops. Not only were the fabric patterns themselves unique but also the materials. If I still lived in Boston I’m sure I would be dropping a decent amount of money here, but, alas, I live 1000 miles away now and have to make do with JoAnn’s. What a shame!

A lot of cute fabrics, a little bit on the expensive side, but they are great quality. I took their intro class. I found it went pretty fast and I was a little annoyed that I had to share a machine with someone. I felt like the instructor showed a lot of the basics of sewing (cutting fabric etc) but not being able to try to cut the fabric myself was a little annoying… i feel like that is something you need to be able to do. Overall it was a good experience-​not great and not horrible.

I visited this shop over the past summer. It’s quaint, small, and tucked away in a small strip looking plaza. The owner who tends the shop is friendly, helped me pick the right fabric, and was really interested in assisting me in finding the right things to go about my project. She also stocks amazing, and very beautiful fabrics you won’t be able to find elsewhere.
I had an overall good experience here. I wouldn’t come here any other time without a coupon though just because I can’t afford her fabrics (though oh so gorgeous!) :(but that’s not the shop’s fault.

Today I went to Grey’s Fabrics and Notions and was shocked to find the cutest sewing shop with the nicest owner. She was knowledgeable and kind as I learned to sew a small bag. I would definitely recommend her classes and her shop for purchasing supplies. An added bonus was that parking was a breeze (which I am sure isn’t true when the SOWA Open Market is running). Definitely would recommend or go back. The owner’s passion for sewing shines through as she guides everyone that enters her doors.

Wow! Stopped into Grey’s to pick up everything I would need to get back into sewing after a very long hiatus. Sarah was patient, supportive, and incredibly helpful. She helped me get everything I needed and also provided loads of encouragement. I left Grey’s feeling excited and ready to get going! Additionally, when I got home I realized one of the items I planned to purchase was not in my bag (I had not been charged for it either). I returned a couple days later and sure enough, Sarah had the item waiting for me behind the counter. I will certainly be a regular here!

I was in need of basic fabric to go with African fabric I bought abroad to make a dress. I saw a Unilocal deal & immediately grabbed it. While the store may be hard to get to on the T, it was easy with a car. The woman in the store was so incredibly helpful, knowledgeable & kind. I know absolutely nothing about fabric, so she helped me select the right color and material to go with what I had (which I brought in to the store). She also directed me to the right zipper and thread color to match that, of course I again had no idea what thread color I would need. Because they don’t do sewing, I was going to by a pattern and hopefully find someone else to do it. She referred me to a local girl who she highly recommended as capable of making the dress I wanted.
I only needed plain colored fabric to go with my cloth, but the range and availability of different colors, prints, and patterns was incredible.
The bonus– there was an absolutely incredible dress (already made) on display as a type of pattern, and it was so much better than my original vision for the dress! So in short I walked away with all the materials I would not, the name of the seamstress who could do it for me, and a picture of how I wanted the dress to be done exactly.
This shop is amazing!

I signed up for the basics class with a friend not having any prior experience. I’m
completely hooked on sewing for life! In two classes we made a pillow and a tote bag. When knew I could sew a straight line?!?
Sarah is an amazing teacher. Very warm and encouraging, even when you pin something completely wrong :-) I highly recommend taking a class. It’s a great learning environment for all types.
Quality, not quantity! The store has everything you need. Fabulous fabric with adorable prints, buttons and zippers of every color. I feel inspired to create something every time I’m there!
Definitely check it out! I promise won’t be disappointed :-)

Great selection of fabrics and patterns with a friendly owner and knowledgeable staff. I love stopping in to see all the wonderful fabrics, classes, and patterns for all of those projects I wish I had more time for. Last year I made a series of half aprons for my girl friends paired with handmade wooden spoons. They went over extremely well and I now want to try my hand at making a dress.
There is a discernible difference between shopping here and going to a box store for your supplies. The selection of fabrics is thoughtfully curated, the staff is friendly, helpful, and passionate about what they do, and I’m certain that beginner and advanced crafters can find exactly what they’re looking for here.

Summary — For amateurs in the world of fabric and thread, Grey’s is a reasonably priced fabric store with a nice selection of fabrics and buttons. The woman working in the store was knowledgable and very helpful. I will definitely come back here for my fabric needs.
Store vibe — The store is small but very organized. If you look around, you see shelves of fabrics, patterns for skirts dresses and bags, and sample projects made in Grey’s various sewing classes. A cookies and tea station was hidden away in the corner, but we were too shy to ask.
Products — My friends and I are amateur crafters, and for us this store was adorable. There were a lot of fabrics to choose from, and we didn’t have a problem finding a fabric we liked. In fact, the problem was that we liked too many! Also, they have a shelf with discounted fabrics! They have a nice collection of buttons at 25 cents a pop. There are a lot of sewing accessories, but my knowledge is limited so I can’t describe them in too much detail.
Service — The woman at the store was very helpful to us. She was patient with our indecision and helped us choose fabric patterns. She also provided good advice for our projects, and we appreciated it a lot.

I wandered in here as an inexperienced dolt who can’t make anything with fabric, but in desperate need of some material as finishing touches on my Halloween costume.
I’d imagine that people like me are annoying to deal with in a fabric store.
The gal working was patient, friendly, and informative. She didn’t make me feel like a bother, and I left having found what I was looking for and wanting to come back again. The fabric in stock was all so pretty, it made me want to explore more!

If I only lived in the Boston area, I could take advantage of the classes they offer…
I have taken a new interest in sewing and after reading Grey’s F&N’s blog (
), I thought I would spend some time in the store and see what useful items I could include in my starter kit.
I highly recommend the store for anyone who is new to sewing. Sarah, the owner, was incredibly helpful and genuinely excited about my newfound interest in the art of sewing. She offered some suggestions on books and patterns (including free, downloadable patterns), with no pressure to buy anything.
I purchased very little fabric because I have limited luggage space to haul everything back home, but I loved, loved, loved the fabrics in the store. Sarah has a great eye. You can tell just by a first look in the store, which is a great space.

I love this place! I have checked out ALL of the fabric stores in Boston and Grey’s ranks near the top. Grey’s has a really well curated collection of fabric and patterns. The store is spacious and clean, and conveniently located near the SOWA lot. Free parking behind the shop too! There are 6 or 8 machines in the back of the shop for lessons or open studio hours where you can just hang out and sew.
Sarah is really patient and great about offering sewing tips. She’ll help you pick out patterns by body type and pattern difficulty and you can tell she is genuinely excited about her work. Definitely stop by if you are in the area and if not, it is worth the trip!

Ok I can’t stand seeing this shop remain review-​less.
I visited Grey’s a couple weeks ago with my mother and we instantly concluded it would fill a huge void in our fabric shopping universe here in Boston. Unlike most of the other shops in town Grey’s is not filled with bolt ends and big four patterns. Instead it has a well curated selection of fabrics, patterns and of course notions. I bought some Anna Maria Horner Voile (beautiful) and a Colette dress pattern (adorable) and can’t wait to go back to get more for my next project. I spent enough money to fill up a frequent buyer card and earn myself a discount, HUZZAH!
The proprietress was lovely and super helpful, recommending fabrics and patterns and showing off samples. I now follow the store on Twitter and Facebook because I like to have my finger on the pulse of the fabric scene (nerd alert).
Online stores may have larger selections but nothing compares to picking out fabric in the flesh. I am so happy Grey’s is here.
