Argos Dog Training, Inc. specializes in Dog Behavior Modification, On and Off-​Leash Obedience Training for pet dogs, Puppy Development and Socialization, and helping people to communicate with their dogs.

History

Established in 2002.

Argos Dog Training, Inc was born out of Argos Pet Care Specialist which was started by Martin’s wife, Nil Berkman, in 2002. From the very beginning, Nil was concerned with service and how her actions affected communities around her. She let the joy in her work, her awareness of her communities’ needs, and her service speak for itself. In 2008 Argos Dog Training, Inc was created by Martin in answer to clients’ need for dog training.

Martin attended National K-​9 School for Dog Trainers in Ohio, focusing on obedience, puppy development, and behavior modification. Martin was designated a Certified Professional Trainer. Martin started taking training clients when he returned home and has been training dogs ever since. Thanks to our community of dog owners Argos Dog Training, Inc continues to grow.

I was born in Nightingale Groove, Jamaica in 1977. My father and my grandfather were farmers. I spent my early years around dogs, cats, and other common farm animals. I was taught to have respect for all living things, but I always have had a special respect for and relationship with dogs. I attended National K-​9 School for Dog Trainers in Ohio. My focus is and was on obedience, puppy development, and behavior modification. The course went far beyond that. At the end of the course I was designated a Certified Professional Trainer. I also became a member of two worldwide Trainer Associations: National K9 Dog Trainers Association and International Association of Canine Professionals. I also became approved as an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. I have been training dogs ever since.

I brought my super smart and high energy Golden Retriever/​Border Collie Mix Darcy in for training with Martin and Heather when she was about 9 months old. She had poor leash discipline, would jump on everyone, played too aggressively, and wouldn’t respond to commands. Martin was able to immediately see how smart she was and focused the training on channeling her energy into behaving as we want in our «mental picture» of a well-​behaved dog”. Martin is a dog-​whisperer of sorts and is able to find the «goldilocks» zone for correcting each dog. This is evident in group class, where there are various levels of temperament amongst the other dogs. Both Martin and Heather are great at communicating and answering any questions you may have. Darcy can now walk on the leash with ZERO tension, has full command of sit, down, heel, as well as variations of these. While she is still very high energy, and can be mischievous if she doesn’t get a full regiment of exercise, the training has provided night and day differences that are evident. I plan on continuing with advanced off-​leash training with Martin and Heather. I would highly recommend them to all.

This review is about the process of setting up a program. We all gotta hustle, but Argos took it too far.
We tried to set up a program with Martin to work on recall. Despite saying we could design a flexible program over the phone, Martin wasn’t open to deviating from his pre-​set program, and only offered packages. For people interested in recall, essentially his only option is a full training for 18 classes/​sessions for $ 1,000+. I wanted to let people know that if you are looking for a tailored training, this is not the place. Don’t spend the initial $ 50.
There are two aspects of the process that are frustrating, bordering on ridiculous:
1. It begins with a $ 50 «consultation.» This was actually a 1 hr sales pitch (seemed to be memorized verbatim). Martin didn’t engage with our dog and only asked 5 – 10 minutes of questions about our dog.
2. Martin insisted that he needed ~2 days of dog day school to be able to work with our dog (for another ~$ 200). Our dog is initially shy, but warms up very quickly. Instead of taking the five minutes to make friends with her during the 1 hr sales pitch, he insisted he had to add a couple of days of dog day school to the package.
Oh yeah, he was also 15 minutes late for the sales pitch, so plan on some extra (ahem, wasted) time.

This has been my first experience with a dog trainer and I have been nothing but pleased! I have a 1 year old American Bulldog who when I had brought her to Argos was stubborn, didn’t listen to me, and made me feel as if I had no control at all. Martin and Heather knew exactly how to help me right away and understood my goals for my pup. They are both exceptional individuals with an amazing amount of patience and really care about the long term relationship that you will have with your dog. Since bringing my dog I have noticed a HUGE difference in her behavior and am extremely pleased with the way things are going. I would absolutely recommend Argos to everyone that needs help training their dog, you surely won’t regret it!

I cannot say enough good things about Argos Training, Martin and Heather. They tailored a training program for my best buddy, Dexter, that far exceeded my expectations. We leveraged multiple training approaches including doggie day school, private and group classes based on my schedule and Dexter’s specific personality. The results have been phenomenal. Everyone who meets Dexter comments how relaxed and obedient he is.
I recommend Argos to absolutely anyone looking to train their dog. Martin and Heather are kind people and experts at what they do!

I rescued a border collie pointer mix and she was a stray so she had some issues to work on. She had a lot of leash aggression and always jumped and pulled on the leash when she saw other dogs. After training with Martin she made a complete 180. His techniques are easy to follow and any one can learn them.
*Please note that you must put aside 15 minutes each day to train and practice with your dog the techniques you learned in class.
I would recommend Argos to anyone because even if your dog is well behaved it’s a lot of fun for the both of you!

My dogs are extremely reactive and bulldogs so a ton of fun to try to train and Martin did a great job getting them and me to know the basics. The group classes are amazing as far as taking dogs together and getting them to respond to commands. Martin is very calm cool and collected even when I am not and is a great at helping me understand how to get the most out of my dogs. Totally recommend him for anyone who wants to be an excellent dog owner

My husband and I adopted a 6 yo pit bull about 3 months ago and quickly realized we needed help. After interviewing a number of trainers, I decided Martin was the best fit. We’ve had four private sessions and three group classes so far and it has been invaluable. We spend 10 – 20 mins per day practicing. We are all a lot more confident and calmer and Buttercup is regularly complimented on her behavior when we are out and about.

Martin was extremely helpful in teaching me to train my rescue lab mix puppy. When my puppy first came home he was very «mouthy» and would constantly nip at my hands, feet, and clothes. I had never been a dog owner and was reassured by friends and family that this was normal puppy behavior. I tried substituting appropriate toys when he bit, saying «ouch», and using the Pet Convincer puff of air device to get his attention. Nothing seemed to work and it escalated to where my vet suggested using a basket muzzle on walks since my puppy was particularly prone to attack me on walks.
I didn’t want to resort to a muzzle and instead called Martin. When I first brought my puppy to Martin, Martin confirmed he was among the top biters he had encountered. Martin taught me a simple move to hold my puppy after he bit and wait for his breathing to slow down and relax before releasing him. I used this move after each bite and within a week my puppy resisted the urge to bite humans altogether. I continued to go to Martin for obedience training and my puppy (now an 8 month old dog) can now heel, sit, lie down, roll over, and loose leash walk. Such a difference from when he first came home!

I thoroughly recommend Martin to anyone who needs obiedence training for their dog. We have a very high energy goldendoodle who has to my surprise responded greatly to Martin’s techniques and tools. Martin’s techniques focus on learning to communicate effectively with your dog, rewarding good behavior with praise, and correcting unwanted behaviors. I love that the reward system is praise based and not food/​clicker based which we had tried and just didn’t work. My dog, who has been discribed as «crazy» and «out-​of-​control» by many, is now listening and responding to me. Walks are becoming a pleasant loose leash experience instead of him dragging me and lunging at passing dogs. Using his techniques and tools I feel like I have better control of my dog.

We highly recommend Martin to all dog owners. He did a fantastic job with our three-​year-​old welsh terrier, Winifred.
Who says that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? And for that matter, a terrier. Martin’s training methods are extremely effective and within a few private sessions our little welsh terrier, who is known by many to be a bit of a wild child, was responding to our commands and actually listening to us. We’re currently working on refining our basic on-​leash commands (sit, down, heel, come) and mastering those commands while off leash.
While it’s not easy and takes time and patience (of both the owners and their dog), you will be amazed with the results.

Martin has been helping us train our puppy Nicky for the last 4 months.
He is doing a wonderful job with the puppy and with us!
Martin has a very calm and gentle way about him and he takes the stress out of puppy training. We have just started off leash training and now our walks are a joy and relaxing rather than stressful and full of tugging and «no’s»

We started Argos Dog Training with Martin when our golden retriever was a year old and the only command he knew was sit. We really wanted a well-​behaved dog that we could communicate with and Martin made it happen. We did the initial 4 private session classes that focused on sit, heel with auto-​stay, down and leash walking and a few group classes to work on on leash socialization. Once we had those down we talked to Martin about off leash. We are a very active family and wanted our dog to be able to be off leash walking, running, hiking etc. Martin worked with us in another 4 session course introducing us to the right commands and the proper uses of an e-​collar. Jax is now a majority off leash dog and we couldn’t be happier. Martin is a wonderful trainer who really knows his stuff. We would recommend him and Argos Dog Training to anyone looking for dog training.

We have completed four private sessions with Martin at Red Dog (Southampton Street) and the transformation with our pup Parker has been incredible. We adopted Parker nearly one year ago and had done no training before coming to Martin. We had a lot of issues effectively communicating and Parker had a lot of anxiety meeting new people and other dogs. In only four sessions, Parker now knows loose leash walking, heel, autosit, down, and come and we are continuing to work on new skills! He still does quite a bit of whining and barking from anxiety, but we are able to correct him and calm him much more quickly. Martin even brings his own (extremely well trained) dogs into the room to introduce moderate distractions into the training environment.
Martin clearly loves dogs and really wants you to succeed. He doesn’t just train dogs but teaches owners how to be effective communicators. We will definitely continue our training with private sessions and group classes. Thanks for your expertise and guidance Martin!

As my boxer Morton got older (read: stronger), so did his training needs. I looked around and saw Argos Dog Training conveniently located at Boston Red Dog. Morton was already a frequent visitor of Skipton and a client of Boston Animal Hospital, so I figured I might as well try out Argos. Argos Dog Training has been a Godsend for us. From the first evaluation to the most recent training experience, Martin has been extremely professional while also making the training fun for Morton and I.
During each training session, we try to work on what we learned the week before, along with something new. Martin will observe and comment on progress as well as what he notices can be improved upon. In between sessions, you, as the owner, are expected to practice what you and your dog have learned. To help with this, Martin provides his clients with a one page Training Session guide to make sure you stay focused and on task with your dog. If you commit to the training, you will be amazed at the improvement in both your dog’s behavior as well as in your relationship with your dog.
Generally speaking, unless you have very specific training you want to address, you will begin with on-​leash training and a specific set of commands. After graduating from the on-​leash training, you will move to off-​leash training. Along with this, there are group classes that help teach your dog not to break commands when they have other distractions around them.
I highly recommend Argos Dog Training and Martin Wright. He provides a safe, fun atmosphere for you and your dog to bond and train together.

Martin is wonderful. He is patience, responsible and knowledgeable. We had our dog trained by Martin twice: once for basic training when he was a puppy and then another one for more advanced off leash training. He did an excellent job both times and achieved everything we set out to accomplish. We took our dog for hiking last summer off leash and we had the best time. Martin focuses not just on the dog but the owners which I must admit I was probably the one that really needed the training… We definitely would use Martin again if we get another dog to keep our dog company in the future.
