I rarely write reviews! But I have to Unilocal about this salon. If you are a woman with curly or wavy hair, and you prefer your hair natural, this is the place. I got a Deva cut by Diana — she cut it dry, then washed it, set it, then correct it, and voila, the best cut ever to wear my hair curly. Sure, I looked great leaving other salons after elaborate blow dry, but that only lasted couple of days. Here you get your hair styled for how you wear it every day. I love Diana, she is no nonsense, down the earth, matter of factly stylist who does not waste words or time. No pressure to spend money on other services or products, just sincere recommendations on what would be good for you, decision is yours.
$ 75 for a cut may sound a bit pricey, but you only need it about 3 times, maybe 4 times a year for medium to long hair, and if you wear bangs they will trim them for free in between cuts. I am definitely going back to this salon, and I will research getting some color as well, after this first and positive experience with Anita.

My 13 year old daughter’s new hair style looks amazing. I allowed her go to the salon alone for the first time because she was paying with her own money. Frankly I was afraid what she was going to going to look like when she came home. But her stylist Brian, did an great job. She is going back today to provide him with the tip she should have given him immediately after service. Thanks for making her first grown up visit to the hair salon great for both of us. Sorry about the tip. I guess she still needs me

I recently moved to the Boston area from Philadelphia. That being said I had no idea where to get my hair done, nails done, dentists, ect. So of course I went to Unilocal.I’m mixed and have your typical big puffy frizzy mixed girl curly hair. Though due to heat damage my hair was broken, dead, and some strands permanently straight. I really wanted to do the chop & go team natural! I’m very picky with my hair and was scared to chop a couple inches off. I picked Anita Kurl and got a DevaCut by Kandace… best decision I’ve ever made. Salon is clean, staff is friendly and very educational, and Kandace clearly knows what shes doing and I feltcomfortable with every snip she madeas she was explaining it to me as she went. Needless to say I’m in LOVE with my hair now and I suggest AnitaKurl and a DevaCut to anyone with curly hair especially african american/​mixed girl. You’ll leave a happy camper!

After deciding to go natural and embrace my extremely curly African-​American hair, it was finally time to have a professional tame my mane. I saw the Unilocal reviews for Anita Kurl, and although they specialize in curly hair I was still nervous and on edge. Street parking was easy and the entire staff and environment was classy and enviting. The appointment started right on time and I was offered a beverage upon my arrival.
This review is for newcomer Brian. After realizing how knowledgable and passionate he is about his craft in my initial consultation, my nerves were immediately put at ease! I got a color, blow out, flat iron and dry cut. The whole experience was amazing from the shampoo, to him being gentle and taking his time to do it right was top knotch.
I have to say that I’m not one to go to salons because I always dread having my hair destroyed. This is the ONE time that I have ever walked out of any salon feeling happy. Brian was a little taken aback after noticing my tears of joy. As a woman, my hair is extremely important to me and I’ve been on a long journey to getting it long and healthy. I am so grateful to have found a stylist on my first try and in a brand new city. I will be visiting Brian again every chance that I get. I even got a few compliments right after leaving the salon while running errands.

Diana did a fabulous job! She cut, blow dried and flat ironed my natural curly hair & it was amazing! It was shiny bouncy. The style lasted about a whole week/​the longest it’s lasted after being straightened. Needless to say, I received a lot of compliments.

I got a DevaCut from Diana. There was a bit of a wait past my appointment time when I got to the salon, but I didn’t mind. They have a comfy seating area and it was nice watching other people get their cuts. When I finally got into the seat and told Diana my vague ideas for what I wanted («anything that looks good around my face as long as my curls look like… curls and not a frizz bomb»). Diana immediately took the reins and started snipping. After the cut I got a wash, some products, and a hooded dryer. Once my hair was dry Diana checked the curls again and then did a final spritz with hair spray.
I absolutely loved how it looked. My usually dry hair felt much softer, the curls were defined, there was some nice volume but not too much (I have a lot of hair and it likes to poof up). It was everything I wanted and I walked out feeling great.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to replicate the look at home. Diana walked me through the routine carefully and I made note of all the Deva products she used and picked them up but it seems I’m still doing something wrong. :(
But that has little to do with Diana, Anita Kurl, and the incredible time I had at the salon. Thank you, Diana!

This is my first time since moving to Boston and I’m so glad I chose Anita Kurl. Diana was my artist and she is so nice and talented! I had a Deva Cut and Set, my first ever. I used Deva Curl for years, but never bought any when I moved to Boston in August. Since then my hair half curls, half slumps dead, and is a total frizz ball. Not anymore. It was cut well, layers were added, and as I’m drying now I know it’s curling like God intended. I can’t thank Diana and Anita Kurl enough. I highly recommend the salon and Diana to anyone with curls and #hairfordays.

Diana did my hair for me 4 years ago and I have been going to her since.
Not only is Diana a great hair stylist she is a honest one too!
l have always wanted to go red but I was afraid it would look horrible on me. Diana reassured me it would look good with my features, so I did it. I have received multiple complements from friends, family and strangers. People have stopped to ask me just to tell me the love my hair color.
I love my red hair and been red for the past 2 years. I don’t think I will ever go back to blonde. Thank you Diana

This review is long over due. But i love this place. If you ever want a great hair cut and dye, for your curly hair, this is the place. I met great people and they were so nice! Thank you for giving me a hair cut i truly love!:)

I have hair that can be really curly or really flat waves depending on the cut. Diana listened to what I wanted– volume and bouncy curls while keeping the length and talked to me about how much realistically would need to be cut. She delivered and gave great tips to how to get the same curls at home!

When I walked out of Anita Kurl on Monday I wanted to cry. Not because something had gone horribly wrong but because my hair — which I spent the better part of the past decade destroying via flat ironing, blow-​drying, you name it… was a gorgeous, frizz-​free and perfectly curly masterpiece. I had come so close to giving up on ever having my curls back, but Kandace had proved me wrong.
The atmosphere is inviting and relaxed while still being highly professional. Before even picking up any shears or tools, Kandace and I chatted about my hair, my aspirations for what I hoped it could be, and then she outlined exactly what she was going to do to make sure I felt comfortable with everything, which I did. They washed it out to get a sense for how my natural curls fell, and then cut according to this to make sure everything was just right. Then they washed it again and explained in detail the Curly Girl haircare system, and how I could achieve the same look at home (which I attempted tonight and it worked wonderfully). I have never been happier with a haircut in my life!
Five stars for all of the folks who work at this salon — I can’t wait until my next appointment in a few months!

Precursor: I am African American with very curly hair. I’ve been looking for a place for 5 years. I’m trying to grow my hair out and was referred by 3 people at my job to go here. It was worth the wait.
The best hair care experience in Boston! Not only was I in and out in less than 2 hours, mind you I was getting a deva curl cut which I expected to take a lot longer, they took me right on time (a rarity in any salon). I got Kandace who told me everything she was going to do, she cut a perfect amount and was very professional, approachable, and attentive. The girl who did my hair was very gentle and very nice. I will definitely visit and refer this place.

I just had my hair cut with Diana and she is great! She’s very kind and took time to check the pictures I saved for some ideas I had for my hair. She cut it dry, then washed with Deva products. Back again to the chair and scissors to get rid of the last tricky curls and after that my hair now it’s just great! I love the layers, the length and how comfortable I felt sitting in there. I will definitely come back for the next cut! Thank you so much, I had a great experience!

Best friend came for a visit and on a whim we decided we wanted to get some fun color in our hair. I called around a bit but no one could accommodate the last min request until I called here. They told us to come by same afternoon.
Annie was my stylist and she is amazing!!! Super cute and very stylish she listened to what I wanted and my concerns and together we came up with a plan. Love my new purple peek a boo highlights!!! Color came out great and awesome blow dry. I would def recommend her and will go back!

Believe the hype. Went to Anita Kurl to get some color /​ombré done. My appointment was with Kandace, who is extremely sweet, knowledgeable and funny. The vibe of the salon is very laid back and chill and they offer you some refreshments as soon as you walk in.
I am generally pretty clueless about hair so I definitely wanted guidance in terms of what color to get to make the ombré actually look nice. I didn’t want something super dramatic and blonde — would look tacky with my skin color (I’m of Southeast Asian descent).
Kandace worked on my hair SO diligently and suggested a toffee-​ish color for the ombré. I went with her advice and am so glad I did — my hair came out AMAZING. She kept working on my hair even past the closing time of the salon. I left the salon lookin, feelin, smelling like a million bucksssssss-​aahhh *Ludacris voice* We even hugged it out at the end to celebrate how good of a hairstylist she is.
Oh, and to top it all off, the salon is located next to Flour Bakery so you can stuff your face with some sticky buns while looking fly with your new hair.

I visited Anita kurl for the first time last year in April for a Deva Cut. I’ve done the deva before but in North Carolina where there are very few options for stylist and they charge you an arm and a leg (monopoly anyone?).
Diana has cut my hair three times now — that’s all you need with proper deva cut in a year span. She is patient and a brilliant stylist. I’m usually like — please just make it better and less triangle-​y. And somehow she does and I can actually replicate it from home.
The salon itself is very casual — it’s got south end prices but not south end snobbery. They have coffee, water, Etc. However that’s not what makes the salon great — it’s the excellent styles.

I had my first visit to Anita Kurl today. I felt bad cheating on my regular stylist but our schedules aren’t really jiving lately and a girl has needs lol…
I was greeted as soon as I walked in and was offered tea, coffee, or water. The receptionist/​shampoo girl/​assistant then offered to take my coat for me and I waited for my stylist. Looking around the salon it has some interesting art on the walls and is actually pretty small. The set up of the salon uses the space they have pretty well. So, you don’t feel too cramped.
I was able to snag an appointment with Michelle for a wash color and blow dry. I expressed all my requirements and requests to Michelle and she listened closely, heard me out, and gave me exactly what I was looking for. The blow out was great and she made my curly hair smooth with just the right volume. I’m a tough customer when it comes to a blow out but Michelle passed the test.
The 10% check in offer on Unilocal brought the total to $ 81 which is pretty good considering the quality and location. Added bonus– online booking feature as well! Will def be a repeat customer.
I deducted one star for the long walk from the T and limited parking in the area. Additionally, the semi sketchy characters hanging outside convenience stores between the Mass Ave T station and the salon were less than my favorite at night.

I’ve had my hair cut here before and they’re wonderful.
I wanted to write this review however because I recently walked in just for a bang trim and was equally impressed with the service.
Even though they were incredibly busy, one of the stylists took me right away. She was incredibly patient and cautious in trimming the bangs to make sure I was happy with them, despite how busy the salon was (it was a Friday night at 6 pm). I was really impressed with how nice they were and I’m loving my shorter bangs!

I needed a last minute haircut and Anita Kurl was the only place I could get an appointment day of. I don’t live in Boston but could not take my grown out faux-​hawk one more minute. I hooked up with Diana Almonte who was awesome. She listened to me and gave me suggestions. She slightly modified my neckline and I really love it — the past few days it has been a breeze to style. She is talented and I definitely recommend her. I thought the salon as a whole was clean, modern and not pretentious at all. I’ll be back when I am in town!
