KBOI (formerly KBCI) was once the highest-​rated and most-​trusted news station in Boise. They were the only station to cover important events including the state prison riot in the 1980s and even helped topple a mayoral administration in the early 2000s.
Then came a series of unfortunate events, mostly involving corporate consolidation. Fisher Communications (then-​owner) outsourced the master control department to Seattle and laid off the entire staff. They also adopted newscast automation to effectively reduce their staff from as many as 8 production personnel down to 3 — this is blatantly obvious whenever the talent goes long and the video sources don’t switch as fast as you’d think.
Their latest acquisition by Sinclair Broadcast Group from Baltimore has resulted in a dramatic shift to appeal to the conservative right, similar to a localized version of Fox News. My biggest pet peeve is when a television station tries to persuade me how to vote or see a particular issue — just give me the news.
I have to give props to a select group of the anchors who try hard to keep the station somewhat competitive with KTVB-​7. However the decline in news quality just to save a couple of bucks is sad.
