LKQ Pick Your Part Blue Island

This is my usual yard to go to when I need to pull parts. The place is huge, organized by make, and relatively clean for a junkyard. They used to have «all you can carry» specials before LKQ took over that were great. Everything you could carry for like $ 20 I think it was. They also had wheelbarrow specials as another reviewer mentioned. A full pullcart/​wheelbarrow was $ 50. Sadly LKQ discontinued these specials. They occasionally have free admission months now though. Watch your back in the yard though, and go with a friend. It’s in a hood ass area. I was there a few years back with a buddy when two shady guys asked me to stick my head in an empty engine bay to tell them what kind of trans the car had. I was like yeah right and just then my buddy walked up carrying the 3′ breaker bar we usually brought with us. They looked at him then the breaker bar and said never mind and walked off.

I love this place when it comes to getting cheap used auto parts. It beats the hell out of getting parts directly from the dealer or from AutoZone if it can be helped. Over the years I’ve gotten replacement door handles that cost me five dollars instead of paying $ 50 at a dealer. I’ve gotten a charcoal canister solenoid that would’ve cost $ 130 from AutoZone for free. I’ve gotten heater blower resistor’s that would’ve cost $ 35 for free. I got a rear used bumper in decent condition for $ 60 when the dealer would’ve charge me over $ 200. I got a new rear taillight housing for $ 20 what it would’ve cost me nearly $ 100 at the dealer. I got a front turn signal housing for $ 10 when it would’ve cost nearly $ 60 at the dealer. I got a new windshield fluid reservoir with pump after mine cracked due to cold weather for eight dollars and would have paid nearly $ 50 for it had it been purchased from the dealer. i’ve got an odds and ends like lightbulbs bolts and other knickknacks for free. The people that work here are very nice and friendly at least they’ve always been to me. However I do see them give other people grief but rightfully so on the account of some of the clientele that visit them being shady to put things very lightly. it cost two dollars to get in and you can get stamped to come and go as you please and to also visit to other junkyards that are in connection with them. One I believe is in Kankakee any other without a doubt is on North Avenue in Chicago. This is the best junkyard out of the three by far because the kankakee junkyard is small and the Chicago junkyard has high amounts of traffic which leads to a lot of cars being picked clean. I do final sidenote should you ever purchased a part that you end up not needing you have a month to return it for a full refund. So go knock yourselves out fix up that used car of yours and save some money.

Yard is OK. I’ve had the same issue Grant has had with the early closing time; I arrived well before they should be closing the gates and was allowed to enter the yard but within just a few minutes there was a guy driving around chasing everyone out. He was calling out «Its 5 o’clock, everyone head to the exits» but once I got back out to my car it was only about 4:30 and feel I was kicked out much too early.
Other than that however… The yard is very large and the turnover rate is pretty quick. Prices are typical — IE, in line with their other locations and with competitor Pick-​n-​Pull. A friend of mine used to have a deal worked out here where he’d get a full wheelbarrow of parts for a reduced price, say, $ 50, or two full wheelbarrows for $ 75. That practice has ended with all the new people working here now.

First time there, I paid more than expected. PLUS $ 2.00 to visit the yard that is not deducted later at parts purchase, PLUS I paid a $ 1.75 «enviromental fee» to have the privledge of removing a door lock actuator myself. This place is a last resort for me. Went there a second time for a discontinued muffler mount and U bolt for my Dodge. They said the part was $ 5.00. The pipe on the car was already cut up by another customer so I brought the bashed in muffler with rusty holes and the bracket (which was welded on this one) and he said $ 35.00 for any muffler, useable or not even if I just want the bracket he originally said five bucks for. I told him to keep it and left. No more.

Summer hours listed as 8:00am-5:30pm both online and the recorded message when you call them at 708−597−5128. However, when you go there, they close the entrance at 4:30 and say that everyone has to be out of the yard by 5:00, pointing at the hours on the door. I can’t review the rest of the yard based on my last trip there since I got there just after 4:30 and the entrances were closed. This place has definitely gone downhill since LKQ took over.

Very well organized by make. All cars are up off the ground with plenty of space in between. Tons of pre 2000 cars for the picking. I’ve gotten like 17parts for my car there. Prices are good and they even give you a price sheet so you don’t walk around the yard wondering what that part is going to cost. Costs $ 2 to get in. You can see the yard from both sides of I57. About 20 minutes from The Loop. Bring tools because you will be pulling your own parts.
