Underground Cupcakes & Cafe

So we just had lunch here. I had the Club Elite but on a Croissant instead of the sour dough. It was amazing but pretty small. The other person with me had the Chicken Salad Croissant and it was delicious as well. He got the half sandwich and soup. he opted for the Cheddar Soup and it was really good. They only have coffee and canned sodas which was a bummer. We can put away beverages so that was not very impressive. I got a big bowl of the Sausage Broccolini soup and it was really good too. After eating all that we opted for two cupcakes, one peanut butter chocolate and one raspberry. Both were great. I thought there was way too much frosting on the Raspberry one so I took it off and the cupcake was really tasty. The staff was friendly and they allowed us to sample the soups first. We will definitely go back. My problem with them was portion size and cost. Our lunch with a gratuity was $ 30 and then another $ 7 for the two cupcakes that we went back and bought afterwards. That is pretty expensive for 1 ½ sandwiches, two drinks and a couple of soups. That is really steep for a lunch for so little.

Advice to them: Add a Pepsi fountain machine and Brew some sweet and unsweet Iced tea. I am also not a fan of places that make you order at the counter and then expect a gratuity. What for? I don’t tip the Chick fil A people and they do as much work. I think that is in poor taste.

Seriously an experience! Each cupcake is perfection!!! Whenever I have a special event or simply want to thank somebody I get a dozen to go! The taste delicious and are beautifully decorated. Top notch!

I have never been a big cupcake guy. I visited Underground Cupcake a couple of times shortly after they opened and really loved the cupcakes I had, but didn’t have a strong personal pull to go back. I then moved out of town for a few years and when I came back I found out that they had expanded and were now doing sandwiches and soup.
Wow, what a great, fresh surprise. The sandwiches are great and the soups are very eclectic and delicious. They also do breakfast sandwiches which are just as delicious as what is available at lunch and the coffee options are very good. I had an excellent espresso there recently. Plus, the staff probably couldn’t be friendlier.
There’s no reason to keep this a secret. Highly recommended and definitely the best option in Ellettsville and probably on this side of Bloomington.
Oh, and I am probably a cupcake guy now.

Unilocal reviews were/​are so stellar that we drove nearly to Ellettsville to check this place out. Very friendly staff but SLOW service. Took quite awhile to get our food (soup and half sandwich). So long that we thought maybe they had forgotten us. We were the only people in the restaurant around 5pm.
The soup (and I cannot remember what kind it was) was weirdly sweet. Honestly, I have forgotten what kind of sandwich I ordered but it was just not great. Apparently, it was forgettable. Drink we ordered was «Russian tea» and it tasted like warm Tang.
The place is very big, but the décor is very weird. If I recall, it has stock photos of San Francisco. Odd.
I honestly wish these folks the best and it seems that most Unilocalers really like this place. It just is not my cup of (weird) tea.

I’ve been here more than a handful of times & know other people who go as often as they can! It really is great.
The cupcakes that I’ve had (chocolate, chocolate-​peanut butter, & a couple others) are great. I had one that I think may have just been chocolate chip but it kind of tasted like banana bread too… it was amazing.
But really, I’m a soup person. I eat soup all the time. Even just cans of Campbell’s at home on the regular. I’ve had several of their soups & I have to say the cheesy broccoli almost killed me. I got a cup of it & it was so good I went right back up & bought another one. I wish I had bought the really big size to begin with! Sandwiches are also great. My mom loves the bird on a wire & I’m a fan of the hot pursuit.
All in all, a great little café in a small town I never thought much of. You got a good one here, Ellettsville!

Wow, I had a cupcake here five years ago. I had no idea they did such a nice lunch. Terrific fresh and tasty sandwiches. My business contact suggested it and I will be back. Vegetarian options, very good lattes. I was so pleasantly surprised.
They have recently expanded so there is plenty of seating and we did not feel like we were squeezed in with a shoe horn. A VERY nice addition to the more limited options of Ellettsville.

We live just outside of Ellettsville and when I have a sweet tooth craving this place fits the bill. The lemon marscapone and the pistachio are to die for! Be sure to look on their website to see the store hours, they are limited.

I am from out of state and ordered three dozen cupcakes, a dozen each for three relatives in the Bloomington area, the day before Christmas Eve. The employee that took my order was very friendly and guaranteed my family would love them. The cupcakes were all delivered by 1:00 on Christmas Eve and everyone loved them not only for how each was uniquely «beautiful» but also they were delicious and moist! A great surprise gift!

I called in to ask when they were going to make the salted caramel cupcakes. Told the young man that I had wanted to order a few for my bosses Birthday on Thursday (it was Tuesday) as well as others, so about a dozen. «hold on let me ask my boss» gets back on the line «she’s doesn’t know, but we can call you when she decides». I told him never mind, I’ll call that morning and if you do not have them, We’ll go someplace else. Sorry, we tried… someone else can make the $ 30 plus dollars, and they’ll be a lot closer. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I found this place for a co worker looking to get something special for her sister on her birthday. She got a dozen assorted cupcakes and they were beautiful. They made me proud to suggest them.
I decided to try them myself and went in with three of my daughters. We ordered a cupcake and one for them to split. Moist and delicious and the frosting is perfect and (subsequent experience) never overly sweet. Try them — a real hidden gem of a place.

AMAZING soup and sandwiches… but oddly, cupcakes have generally lacked flavor, pizazz/​décor and size. However, I cannot stress enough how much I would go for the soup and sandwiches. Zucchini green curry is my fave! Butternut squash is a close second (though the best butternut squash soup would be scenic view in the fall. Cinnamon sugar croutons. Need I say more???) They also do a great veggie sandwich and really reasonably priced lunch combos and kids meals with a cookie (which was «great» per the 10 and 16yo boys that ate them).

When I’m visiting Bloomington I make a trip to UCC. It’s great that the selection changes from time to time. The only thing they could do to make it better would be to post their daily soup specials on their website. That way I’d know if one of my favorites was available that day.

Amazing cupcakes, great sandwiches, and wonderful service.
I haven’t had a bad cupcake yet, but steer clear of the cherry pie cupcake. It wasn’t bad, but a cupcake filled mostly with pie filling just didn’t hit the cupcake spot, ya know?
Kinda wish they had a «buy x cupcakes get one free».

Had them manage a large order for work and this was as smooth as can be. They are very friendly and made it very simple to place an order. I had no idea what I wanted and they just delivered a perfect batch of cupcakes. I got so many positive reviews from the party about the taste of the scrumptious cakes… not to mention how BEAUTIFUL each cake was. They are so good at what they do.
I had never been here before but the cupcake experience makes me anxious to try their deli for lunch.

Such a nice quaint spot! Their food and desserts are both wonderful. I love their chicken salad sandwiches. I was craving a sweet treat this week, but with gestational diabetes this usually isn’t an option. I was pleasantly surprised when I went and they said they did have sugar free cupcakes! I had a sugar free pistachio cupcake that was so delicious, and perfectly hit the spot! It was hard to tell it was sugar free! Thanks, Underground!

This place is the best. They were extremely helpful, friendly and willing to work with us.
We called from Massachusetts to order our son that stayed in IU for summer camp a birthday cake. It was last minute order, even they were very busy that day, they still tried their best to get our order in.
Later we had to change the cake pick up time multiple times, they were so kind and did their best to help us.
The cake was beautiful and tasted delicious (according my son).

This place really is a gem, and how fortunate we are to have it in the Ellettsville area; it would do great anywhere!
Though their claim to fame is cupcakes, they could just as easy be called «Underground Soups & Sandwiches.» Their rotation of exotic soups such as Ethiopian Stew, Hoppin’ John (a Cajun/​creole stew), and my personal favorite, Potato Spinach Artichoke, could stand up against the most acclaimed in the area. The sandwiches don’t change as often as the soups, but they don’t need to! There are plenty of choices whether you’re a carnivore or herbivore. Furthermore, their daily dishes are always noted as vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, etc. so you’ll know what you’re getting. Every dish I’ve had here has delicious tasting, fresh ingredients — especially the vegetables. Just to name one, the avocado and tomatoes on the Turkey Cobb are always great.
The place has a really clean, city vibe to it. One wall features a silhouetted skyline, the opposite wall has menus, self-​serve ice water, and pictures of confectionery work, likely created by one of the owners or employees who works on the cupcakes. Pictures of London on the walls really set the scene.
A review of a cupcake store cannot go without a mention of the cupcakes, no matter how good the soup. The cupcakes are without a doubt professional, both in design and flavor. You’ll find a list of all flavors at the front, and it’s a long one. I would mention as many as I could, but it wouldn’t scratch the surface of their repertoire, so here’s just one of my favorite flavors: Root Beer. They have a range of 5 – 10 different flavors ready to serve each day, and make the others on request for bigger orders (yes, they cater). The more intricate flavors can get a little pricey, but it’s worth it to give them a try. Try their many coffee options, too.
Underground and its employees really know what they’re doing. The owners are often in the store, taking your order and making the food on your plate. They’re always trying new, adventurous dishes, and they seek out costumer feedback. Underground really sets the standard around town for small, quick eats, and they deserve recognition.

We have stopped by and enjoyed treats here and there, but after ordering 72 cupcakes for a birthday party I am confident in saying THIS PLACE IS GREAT.
Amazing flavor choices available and I went with the birthday boys favorite flavors, which included Guinness (amazing and my new favorite), Dreamscicle, chocolate, chocolate cherry, and red velvet.
The cupcakes are absolutely beautiful and delicious. They are perfectly moist and the frosting is on point.

Not just Cupcakes! Sandwiches, Soups, Salads, and of Course Cupcakes. Includes both Gluten Free and Sugar Free Cupcakes. All of their sandwiches also come in a Gluten Free option and they offer at least one Gluten Free Soup choice a day along with a Vegetarian selection on their yummy soup menu which rotates daily. Several Vegetarian Sandwiches are available on their regular menu which is very refreshing for Ellettsville IN. Really, the food is great for this tiny little town just outside of Bloomington.
The theme and meal names are fun and inventive but the storefront is tiny and service can be a little slow, especially during lunch and dinner rush. You can call ahead and speed things up and I am pretty sure they have lunch delivery now. However, the staff is very friendly and work hard to make sure you leave happy. I will add that if you have a big order of cupcakes call ahead to make sure there are enough. When they run out… well they are out!
The flavor combinations for their sandwiches and cupcakes work well and the ingredients are fresh and tasty. The prices are reasonable, and there are different combo meals or al a carte options.
As stated above, the cupcakes are yummy and vegan and gluten free choices are offered daily. The soups, usually 4 choices daily, are tasty and also come in gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan.
My favorite sandwich is the gluten free Pot Roast!
Catering order on cupcakes which are simply delicious is available, even customized flavors!

I think Underground Cupcakes & Café must still be a well kept secret for both vegetarians and/​or cupcake lovers because it seriously excels in both of those categories but is often times still half empty when I come here.
There is a separate vegetarian section of the menu with four different sandwich options. I have tried three of them so far – Popper, Torta Vegetarian, and Veg on Wire – and all of them are unique and delicious. I have also had a couple of their vegetarian soups and they have all been super tasty as well.
And the cupcakes! This place has some of the best cupcakes in the area! They always offer several different varieties and show a lot of creativity in all of the cupcakes they offer.
If you like them on Facebook, they advertise what cupcake flavors and different soups they are offering that day, which will for sure make you want to give them a visit.
Definitely one of my favorite places in town for vegetarian lunch and cupcakes.
