Specialties

The TMBCC grounds are open to visitors free of charge every day during daylight hours. Meditation instruction is offered every Monday at 6:00 pm & group meditation Monday & Thursday at 6:30pm. Yoga is offered 5 days/​week on a donation basis. Teachings in Buddhist philosophy are held every Sunday at 10:30 and 12 noon. Orientation sessions are held the first Sunday of the month at 2pm. The Happy Yak Gift Shop is open 1:00 to 6:00 pm daily.

History

Established in 1979.

TMBCC was established in 1979 by Tagster Rinpoche (Thubten Norbu), the elder brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In 2005, His Holiness gave the directorship to Arjia Rinpoche, former abbot of Kumbum Monastery in Eastern Tibet. Located on the 108 acre center are a Cultural Building with library, gift shop and 5 retreat rooms, Kumbum Chamtse Ling Monastery and Temple, two stupas, two mani korlo (prayer wheels), and four rental cottages.

Arjia Rinpoche J.

Manager

Arjia Rinpoche is the Director of TMBCC. A Tibetan high lama of Mongolian descent, he was born in Eastern Tibet and recognized as the reincarnation of the father of Lama Tsong Khapa. In 1998 he left Tibet due to the repression of Tibetan cultures and religion. In 2005, he was appointed Director of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center in Bloomington, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His memoir, Surviving the Dragon, published in 2010 recounts his life and the story of Tibet in recent years.
