History

Established in 1952.

Smith’s Shoes was founded in 1952 by Phillip Smith. The original location was on the east side of the downtown square. Sid Smith took over the family business from his father Phil. Smith’s Shoes continued operating on the downtown square, but when the College Mall was built in 1965, Smith’s became one of the first occupants.

Sid operated two Smith’s locations until 1967 when he closed the downtown location. In 1990 Steve Smith became the 3^rd generation to carry on the family business. He used his experience with Foot Locker to add athletic footwear and apparel to the mostly casual and dress shoe assortment. Smith’s Shoes quickly outgrew several locations in the mall.

The store grew from 2,400 sq ft to over 13,000 sq ft and also experienced a small name change to become Smith’s Sport N’ Shoe. In January 2009, after over 40 years at College Mall, Smith’s moved to 1917 S Walnut St. Steve Smith purchased the strip center formerly called The Maxwell Center.
