More About Oliver Winery
Our winemaking philosophy is about capturing fruit-forward flavors, thoughtful craft, and sourcing and growing the best grapes and fruit possible.
Oliver Winery produces more than 45 wines, including 15+ estate bottled wines from Creekbend Vineyard, our 50-acre vineyard in northwest Monroe County. Creekbend is our commitment to making great wine from Indiana grown grapes. Our Creekbend Collection includes dry wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin and Chardonel as well as sweeter style wines like Traminette, Catawba and Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.
Oliver’s classic vinifera wines include Zinfandel, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. We also produce award-winning, sweeter style wines such as Soft Red, Camelot Mead, and Beanblossom Hard Cider in Original and Peach flavors.
History
Established in 1972.
Oliver Winery started in the 1960s as a hobby in the basement of Indiana University law professor William Oliver. His enthusiasm for making wine led him to establish a vineyard northwest of Bloomington. Soon the flourishing vines produced grapes far in excess of his needs as a hobby winemaker, and he began plans to open a commercial winery.
Professor Oliver was instrumental in passing legislation allowing for the creation of small wineries in Indiana. The Indiana Small Winery Act passed in 1971 and Oliver Winery opened to the public in 1972. Initially, sales were modest but grew quickly after we began making Camelot Mead.
Professor Oliver’s son, Bill, took charge of the winery in 1983. He focused on enhancing the visitor experience by increasing wine quality and variety, establishing gardens and providing great customer service. Bill reestablished Creekbend Vineyard in 1994 and continues to lead the winery with the pioneering and innovative spirit of his father.
