Indiana University Assembly Hall

I’m giving Assembly Hall 5 stars because that is where Bob Knight coached, because that is where IU went undefeated in 1976 (the last team to do so!), and most of all because that is where I had many great college experiences.
You still can’t beat the pep band (always amazing musicians – probably the best in the country), the cheerleaders performing a routine to the William Tell Overture in the fourth quarter, and the old Hoosiers in red sweaters talking about «our boys» (who are unfortunately more often than not from Bedford-​Stuyvesant rather than Bedford, Indiana). If you have the chance to go to an IU game, you should go, just to see what remains of Hoosier culture (and if the team is doing well, the atmosphere can be electric – regardless, the fans are never mean like fans from Kentucky or or Michigan).
But lets face it, the building always was an architectural monstrosity. I’m not sure if it is the last gasp of the International Style or Brutalism or how to characterize it, but it certainly doesn’t fit in with the rest of the campus. Moreover, it is now full of advertisements and surrounded but other buildings.
So really, I could give Assembly Hall one star on the merits, but I could never profane the great state of Indiana.

What more can be said about Assembly Hall. Five banners, legendary coaches and players, and a fantastic Hoosier Hysteria 2015 event!

If I could rate this higher than a 5-​star, I would! BEST SPORTS ARENA EVER!
Now, I may be a bit biased — but I don’t care. I know non-​IU grads feel the same way about this being a pretty great place.
There is something extra special about Assembly Hall. I love that the court is so simple and not overpowered by sponsors. Seeing the banners hang on the wall is iconic. And the seating is so unique compared to other basketball areas.
If you ever have the privilege to visit Bloomington, make time to stop and see Assembly Hall.

Assembly Hall-​IU Bloomington — 4 Stars: Indiana University basketball citadel. If Pauley Pavilion is the Holy Grail for the west coast, Assembly Hall is its match in the Midwest. Nice venue for the Hoosiers, all above ground and on the main campus. Right next to the football field, so parking is plentiful and easy. Opened for the ¹⁹⁷¹⁄₇₂ season along with the arrival of Bob Knight, and since he stayed for 29 years it is still considered his house.

I’m an IU grad so therefore probably a bit biased, but how can you *not* get excited when you can see 5 NCAA national championship banners hanging behind the stands on the east end of the stadium? This is truly a basketball mecca and any fan visiting from out of state should make the trip to Bloomington to see a game here. It’s also interesting to view the trophy case, the portraits of the former All Americans, etc.
I went to the IU vs. Ball State game last night, really great to see IU score over 100 points. Admittedly, the balcony seats here are not good. I would probably skip going to a game if my only option was a balcony seat… thankfully I had much better seats than that last night. My very first IU game as a college freshman? Balcony, last row, partially obstructed view of the court. Good times…
I was a little tired on the drive down because I went to the Colts game *and* the IU game yesterday. That’s how I roll sometimes (apparently). Once I got to the game, the adrenaline kicked in and I was wide awake. The pep band does a great job of getting the crowd involved during timeouts and the fans are great.
I hope to make it back for a couple of more games this season and for many years to come.

This is the best atmosphere in college basketball. It’s one of the best stadiums in the country. The Dean Dome, Allen Fieldhouse, Cameron Indoor Stadium and Hinkle Field House have some company.

Saw the the Hoosiers defeat the then number 1 seeded Kentucky Wildcats on Dec. 10, 2011. The arena is clearly outdated. One can tell it was built in the 1970s. However, it has its charms. Its funky look adds to its uniqueness. While I have seen better venues, the atmosphere is great and the arena’s rich history is very apparent. The seats where I sat were very comfortable and cushy; however, I rarely used it because everyone was on their feet throughout the entire game. All I can say is that if you ever visit Bloomington, then you must go to a Hoosiers basketball game!

They can cram a lot of people in this place. Don’t go if you’re claustrophobic or afraid of heights.

Super interesting fan experience. First, about 90% of the seats are located on the long ends of the basketball court, in three main tiers. The arena is tall and thin from the inside, and while I’ve heard the view of the court is solid from all angles, the upper seats look like serious nosebleed territory. Meanwhile, the short ends of the court go straight up, creating an interesting orchestra/​cathedral feel.
Fortunately, even in a down season, IU’s crowd was fanatic. During an exciting game that unfortunately ended in a loss to Iowa, there were some big moments and the crowd came through with serious energy in all of them, particularly in a deafening roar that ensued after a stellar dunk by #10 Will Sheehey, a roar which lasted for at least the next five plays of the game.
Thanks to the fans more than the structure itself, Assembly Hall is a very solid place to watch a game.

The rating is for the greatest basketball program in the world. Assembly Hall itself is great if you’re in row 25 or below. Anything else is subject to poor sight lines. BUT Hoosier Basketball is special because … It’s Indiana!

I know I’m going to killed for this but Assembly Hall is a horrible place to watch a game. It has history and that is the only reason I would give an extra star. There are so many seats that give you no view of certain parts of the court. I think IU basketball has a chance to make a comeback but I have to imagine that many youngsters coming to Bloomington to check out the facilities don’t care about history and the arena itself is not impressive.

This is where you watch Indiana University Hoosiers Men’s Basketball. An IU Basketball is the most amazing thing you can experience in sports. Every basket made generates a crowd reaction that is so incredible it makes visitors think that we just want a NCAA title. The energy is awe inspiring. I love going to games here. I’m a proud fan and alumni of Indiana University.

It was awesome to see the Dalai Lama here! The event only used half of the stadium but it was extremely well set up. The security was very thorough but quick and polite.
The seats were pretty comfortable (even for being in the nosebleed section!)
