History
Established in 1991.
The Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center building dates from 1923 when it was originally designed and built by Henry Ford as a Model T assembly plant and showroom. As the automobile industry developed over the years the business outgrew the original building. New uses for older buildings became a popular new way to retain history and character across the nation and especially in downtown Bloomington beginning in the 1980’s.
Continuing the building’s tradition or community popularity, the community came together to transform it into the Bloomington/Monroe County Center in 1991. The Monroe County hotel industry as well as several local businesses saw the need for a meeting facility and invested in the restoration. The meeting and event space immediately drew thousands of people for statewide association events, regional public events, corporate recognition and family social events.
