The Mill At Blacksburg

Let’s keep it short.
It’s cheaper than other places.
It is old and dirty.
There are ants and hornets.
If there are any damages, they will ask you to pay for it when you leave.
You will get half of your deposit back by end of the year.
You will save some money living here and you will lose some money by the time you move out.
If you want to live here, it’s your call.

I had no problems living here. The apartments are well maintained and they are quick to fix any problems. They allow pets; large and small dogs for an additional fee and deposit. The staff is friendly and willing to go the extra mile for you. They were able to find someone to take over the remaining 3 months of my lease. I have not lived at a place where the management staff really works with you. The units are built to allow for good ventilation. You hardly need the AC, but it never really gets that warm in Blacksburg. The 2 bedroom apartment had good sized rooms and closets. The Mill is very affordable and a quiet place to live. It is in a good location, near restaurants, shops and a grocery store.

My son lived here for a while after graduation. I was glad when he moved out.
The first floor apartments are actually about four feet under ground, so that your window sills are at ground level. This makes for a dank, musty smell, and good luck trying to get rid of it.
The apartment was decent in size, with the exception of the kitchen, which is just a narrow little strip. If you have anything on the counter, you’re left with no room for food prep. The small bathroom is okay, but the tub and sink caulking looked like it was done by a preschooler.
The walls were painted without any effort to remove pieces of tape, etc., which were just painted over. Most of the light switch and socket covers weren’t screwed on properly, or in one case, at all. The oven door handle was just about falling off. The shelf in the bedroom closet was warped to the point where it formed the letter ‘U’.
The floors are very creaky, so if you have an upstairs neighbor who weighs more than 40 lbs., it sounds like a herd of elephants above you. The carpeting was put down without any effort to remove objects from the floor first, so as you walk barefoot around the apartment, you get a painful surprise here and there.
My son never had any problem with management, so I can’t offer any personal experience on that topic. Parking seemed to be adequate, and they do allow pets (for an additional monthly fee). Most of the dog owners I saw there were responsible with regard to their friends’ «deposits».
The big draw for The Mill is that it’s affordable, and located away from campus so there aren’t a lot of obnoxious parties on the weekends. If the above-​described problems don’t bother you, then maybe this is the place to hang your hat while you’re in Blacksburg. If not, well.. .
