Whitney is warm and professional. She gave me some beautifully soft, updated color and nailed the cut! Wheelhouse values continuing education and hires some of the most talented stylists in Birmingham!

As a preface, this review is not actually for the hair services of the salon (as I never experienced them) but for the customer service and booking of my appointment prior to going to the salon. I was visiting Birmingham for the holidays and was looking for a place to get a haircut, and decided to try Wheelhouse based purely on the reviews. Now, I completely understand that it’s the holiday season and everyone is busy, but I’ve always felt like customer service and the interactions while waiting for an appointment/​with the receptionist for any service (hair salon, day spa, doctor’s office, etc) were important to making the experience a quality one, no matter the season. When I called today to make my appointment, I was put on hold not once, not twice, but three separate times (each time, I was put on hold for up to 7 minutes and assumed the person on the other line had just forgotten about me so I just called back about ten minutes later). Again, I completely understand that the salon was probably packed and very busy but to be put on hold for that long repeatedly seems almost ridiculous — and then when I was finally taken off hold, I barely received an apology for my wait time. Nevertheless, based on the other rave reviews here on Unilocal,I booked my appointment for the following day. Then later in the day while doing some holiday shopping, I decided to venture into the Hair Group in Homewood on a whim and found the space warm and inviting and the receptionist personable and charming. They were able to fit me in for a shampoo, cut, and dry and Sarah did an amazing job with my hair! I called Wheelhouse when I decided to get my haircut at the Hair Group instead, and (again after being put on hold and also strangely after the guy answered the phone with his name instead of saying «Wheelhouse Salon» as one would expect, prompting me to have to ask if I was indeed calling the right place) was told very snootily that usually they have a 24 hour cancellation policy but they would do me the favor of cancelling it for me as I had just booked earlier that day. I just have to say — there are so many great hair salons in Birmingham and, while Wheelhouse may have excellent hair stylists, I’d much rather spend my time and money at one that treats their customers with some decency and respect.

I went in and had my hair done by their assistant Mandi and I’ve never been more pleased! I will definitely be going back! I’ve been using the same lady to do my hair for over 7 years and now I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to her!

If you live in Birmingham and are looking for a né hair place, look no further. The most happy I have ever been leaving a salon. Took the time to figure out what you want, explain everything they will do and then explain and give tips as they are blowing your hair out. All the girls just seem so fun and love their job. Even scheduled for my boyfriend to get his hair cut tonight. Love it!

Drop what your doing and call and make an appointment with Helen! I have gone to the same hair stylist for 8 years and since moving to Birmingham I realized we had a break up. Not because she’s not good but because long distance never works and my hair has need people!
After being told I would love the vibe of wheelhouse I did some internet snooping and found beautiful photos of the hair Helen did and had to book a cut. I got a hair cut with her first and I will say I was so nervous. Having a new person cut your hair is a lot to take in! But she is so sweet and talked me through the whole cut and made me feel calm and confident in her.
Fast forward a month later I got a color. HOLY SHIT I LOOK LIKE A GODESS. My hair is so amazing. She added a lot of warmth to my locks and it looks so good. It’s even super healthy even thought she lightened it quit a bit.
To top it all off Wheelhouse prices are kind of amazing. Like when they told me how much it was going to cost I was shocked and thought she was kidding. Anywhere else (in other cities) I have been quoted $ 200 – 270 to color my hair. It was around $ 140 for the color! That is a steal!
If you want to look like a sexy glamazon diva super model go and get your hair done at Wheelhouse. Don’t forget to go buy a bat when you leave BECAUSE YOU WILL LOOK SO GOOD YOU WILL HAVE TO FIGHT THEM ALL OFF OF YOU HUNTY!

As a Birmingham transplant I was not having the best of luck finding a new stylist. That is until I stumbled upon Wheel House. It is extremely refreshing to find a place in Birmingham that looks like it could be in several of the large cities i have lived in but still has a sense of warm southern hospitality! My stylist was Whitney and she couldn’t have been more accommodating. She gave me exactly what i was looking for… A great cut with some new bangs. I will definitely be back!

Hellen is amazing! I have naturally dark brown hair and have always wanted to go red– hellen made that happen. What I love most about her is that she gives you a hair plan and talks about how to take the look to the next level, she’s also got great tips.
We started with coloring my hair a copper red at my first appointment (bottom right is immediately after it was done). 8 weeks later I came back in and had a root touch up and balayage highlights to the bottom. The balayage was a recommendation Hellen made after my first appointment, she was already thinking ahead about how to add dimension and improve the look for my next visit.
I highly recommend her for coloring, highlights, & a hair cut because my hair has never looked this good before.

I was disappointed with my experience after reading some rave reviews. I felt like I left with a shorter version of what I came in with, when I asked to keep the length but change the shape. Not much engagement on the stylist’s part as far as getting a better sense of what I wanted.
After posting this however, I received a call from the owner asking if I’d like to come in to have them try again. Very thoughtful, and much appreciated.

Wheelhouse is in a great location in Homewood, one block over from bustling 18^th Street. Even at 11am, parking was easy to find and I was greeted with someone offering a beverage when I walked in. I only had to wait 5 minutes for my appointment, and Rebecca did a fabulous job! For a shampoo, cut, and blow dry/​style, I was in and out in less than an hour and the price seemed reasonable as compared to other area salons. The vibe is funky and kitschy, which is refreshingly different! The salon seems to always be collaborating with and promoting other small businesses in the Birmingham area. I will definitely be back again!

Wheelhouse salon is a unique boutique salon located in the heart of downtown Homewood. The owners Courtney and Johnny have created a unique experience you won’t find in any other salon in Birmingham. From the unique local jewelry, eyewear and other handmade goodies, unique Harold and Mod furniture for sale to the free Octane coffee you won’t find a friendlier more relaxed atmosphere. My stylist Helen is amazing. She trained at Bumble and Bumble in NYC and is the kindest person I know! Rebecca is amazing too!

Brook Armistead at Wheelhouse did my hair yesterday & it looks awesome! I wanted very specific highlights & low lights & I’m kinda picky about my bangs too.
Brook listened & delivered exactly what I ask for — then styled my hair beautifully! Love the urban, vintage, kitschy décor of the salon.
Cool addition to downtown Homewood & I will definitely be seeing Brook again.
