History

Established in 1997.

In 1997, after working in several private practice offices, Dr. Carl F. Clavenna took over a well regarded Birmingham Ophthalmology practice which was established in 1965. Dr. Clavenna moved the office from Brown street to our current location at 600 S. Adams to create a state of the art practice, with plenty of parking. Dr. Gregory B. Fitzgerald joined the practice at this time. Both of the doctors and the entire staff at Clavenna Vision Institute are very proud of the fact that they are repeatedly praised by their patients on the timely, friendly, and comprehensive services provided to them. Noted as a patient friendly practice, Clavenna Vision Institute provides comprehensive eye care services. Our board certified ophthalmologists perform routine eye exams, LASIK procedures, cataract surgery, treat all eye diseases and fit contact lenses. The optical shop offers a great selection of eyewear for nearly every budget.

Carl F. Clavenna, M.D. and his partner, Gregory B. Fitzgerald, M.D. have developed a comfort and confidence with the latest technologies that provide their LASIK and Cataract patients the best results and care possible.

Both doctors are board certified ophthalmologists, specializing in ocular surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology including routine eye care. Together, they have preformed more than 9,000 vision correction procedures. Both teach and mentor at Beaumont Hospital.

Clavenna Vision Institute, 600 S. Adams, Suite 200 at the corner of Bowers, established in Birmingham in 1965, takes pride in being involved in the community as well as providing the highest quality eye care possible.

Dr Clavenna is really thorough in his work. He is very friendly and professional. I am lucky because he found a temporary condition with my eyes and was concerned so he ordered further blood work with a hematologist. Because of this I found out that I have a hereditary blood disease, one that most people don’t find out about till its too late. This changed my life and I am very lucky. There are many eye doctors but he is one of the best. His office is nice, plenty of parking, and everyone is very friendly. I’ve been coming here for years and wouldn’t imagine going anywhere else!

Dr Fitzgerald performed cataract surgery on both eyes over the last month. I have worn thick classes for the last 60 years and was very hesitant about anyone touching my eyes. I am so happy that I had this surgery. I still cannot believe how well I am seeing and how relatively easy the whole surgical procedure was under Dr Fitzgerald’s skilled hands. Dr Fitzgerald is extremely easy to talk to, takes his time and treats you like a friend. I have nothing but praise and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a top notch eye surgeon. Driving and being around a pool without glasses still feels unreal.

I went to Dr Clavenna for my LASIK done on 5÷4÷2012. I went to him because my father had his LASIK done maybe 8 years prior with Dr Clavenna and was happy with the results, and he seemed the most qualified doctor around town after doing research due to their up to date machines and customVue technology.
My eyes were one of the worst he had seen and also a high astigmatism, and going into it he told me I probably wouldn’t get 20⁄20 the first time around due to the severity of my correction. The procedure was painless and everyone was very professional, I had the procedure done on Thursday and came back to work on Monday (I work in an office at a computer all day).
After a few months it was clear I wouldn’t have 20⁄20. I was closer to 20⁄40. I needed reading and driving glasses. I decided to get the enhancement done one year later. He did it for free the second time because he does enhancements within a year if you don’t get 20⁄20 the first time and are unsatisfied.
Unfortunately he could not get my eye flaps back up when we went to do LASIK again, which happens rarely if they heal over too much. We jointly decided to proceed with LASEK (prk) surface oblation which is another option if this happens. I was pretty upset and worried during the procedure due to the complication, but Dr Clavenna and his OR staff did an amazing job to calm me down and they were again very professional and helpful. The procedure then went along as planned and 5 weeks later after my enhancement I am almost at 20⁄20 with no discomfort at all.
I really feel Dr Clavenna has my best interests at heart and really listens to my concerns. He goes over all possible complications and makes sure you are making the right decision for you. Even with going through the procedure twice (which he told me up front would probably happen) I have absolutely nothing bad to say about him and his entire staff. I recommend Dr Clavenna and LASIK procedures to everyone I meet! It entirely changed my life!

I had my Wavefront LASIK done with Dr. Fitzgerald. I really like that they did the surgery at Beaumont Hospital. It has only been a few days and I can’t believe how well I see, they did an amazing job. The entire staff is very friendly, helpful and professional. I would very highly recommend Dr. Fitzgerald and the Clavenna Vision Institute.

I scheduled an appointment purely on the basis that it was close to my house and covered by my vision insurance. I was delighted with my experience! My routine exam was done by a technician, followed by a visit from the doctor, followed by a glaucoma test and dialating my pupils, and then another eye exam. I’ve never seen anyone be so thorough!
After receiving my prescriptions, an optician (Nancy) helped me with frame selection, explaining all my options from anti-​glare to rounded edges to two different lens options, and how much my insurance would cover on each (as I was concerned about keeping it to a certain price point).
I would highly recommend coming here!

So, I wasn’t blessed with 20⁄20 vision. I’m pretty sure I didn’t even have it as a kid. My first glasses were giant dark blue metal rims… real pretty for a 4th grader! Anyway, I’ve been to my fair share of lenscrafters and pearl visions and although they served their purpose, there is something different about going into an actual doctor’s office for your eyes.
Everyone I have encountered at Clavenna have been very, very nice… very thorough and answer any questions you might have without trying to hurry you out.
In addtion, the women that help you find the perfect pair of eye glasses are awesome!!! They are so nice and will write styles down for you so you can think about it and come back later.
No more giant ugly glasses for me!!!
