Glen Oaks Big Sur

Loved this place. Had a room with an indoor/​outdoor fire place and it was lovely to sleep with a fire going at your feet. Heated bathroom floors were a plus. Scrabble for post dinner was fun and different than tv! Especially compared to other hotel options in big sur this is THE way to go. Not insanely expensive, but still lovely, comfortable and enjoyable.

So incredibly awesome that we almost don’t want to tell anyone! The cabins are clean and well appointed and the grounds are rustic enough to be beautiful and peaceful but clean and well maintained. The staff is nice and welcoming. Well worth the costs for a great experience!

I’ve stayed here twice and I love it. I love how cozy the place is, plus the cool midcentury modern vibe. I love the in-​room fireplaces, private little balconies, heated floors, and helpful staff who give great recommendations on their favorite hikes, etc. If you go during the slow season be sure to inquire about an upgrade as they’ll upgrade you to empty better rooms if possible!

I can’t say enough good things about this place. I was searching for places to stay for a December weekend in Big Sur for a long time. Everything was expensive and/​or tacky /​not well connected. Glen oaks had the cheapest rooms for $ 175, and by far the best rooms I’ve seen in pictures.
Turned out, reality was even better. The front desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful with recommendations and directions. Our cabin was gorgeous — I really appreciated the nice interior design and décor. But that doesn’t even parallel with how much I appreciated the electric fireplace, and heated bathroom floors. The heated floors were practically life changing — made me hate my own bathroom at home a little bit.
There’s a little patio with a table and two chairs by the front of the house. I grabbed a coffee from the front desk in the morning, came back and read on the patio as it lightly drizzled outside, and two beautiful jays came over to play.
Only regret was that we only got to stay one night here. Would definitely come back next time I’m in big sur!

Reasonably priced room close to Andrew Molera, Pfeiffer Beach, and other great Big Sur attractions. The front desk was helpful, check out times were generous, and the whole stay was well worth it. For only $ 200, we stayed in a beautiful room! Minutes away from Pfeiffer State Park campground with a lot of great trails for running and hiking.

My husband and I just stayed here on our honeymoon, and we loved it! The décor of the rooms is amazing. They did such a great job at upgrading/​renovating in a style that is modern (mid-​century modern), but still very earthy, so fits right in with the Big Sur surroundings. They have a lovely fire pit that is on in the evening until 10 pm, which we sat by with 6 other guests and chatted under the trees and stars. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating.
We didn’t have any cell service, but the WiFi was free, so we used that. We also made a local call from the land line in the room, which is free for local calls (e.g. to a restaurant or your possible next stop).
The restaurant across the street (The Roadhouse), is also so nice! We only had coffee there in the morning, but heard from the other guests that dinner there was really good. Next time we will definitely be having dinner there.
This hotel is maybe not the most luxurious compared to some of the resorts in the area, but it is perfect for the price point (it’s less than half the price of those resorts/​spas) and we would definitely stay here again.

I was so lucky to find this place, literally two nights before we journeyed from LA for a birthday road trip to the sur. I was freaking out, big sur seemed so complicated, with few places to stay, and most of them costing about a months rent for a night, I thought my birthday would be ruined ! Alas, hotel gods smiled upon me and led me to glen oaks. I really just booked it because it was the only available place, didn’t even realize it was going to be so nice ! The price was fair for the area so I figured if it’s not over 400 it’s gonna be a roach motel, luckily I was wrong !
This place is beautiful. And the best part, you don’t need to leave! With a restaurant and bar across the street, a fire pit for communal smores, and scrabble in the room it’s a perfect getaway! I didn’t even know the room came with a patio. I was so excited I quickly forgot there wasn’t a tv or an air conditioner. Best part of the room? Heated freaking bathroom floors. Actually amazing. The beds were so comfortable, and I loved the wine bottles for purchase from local wineries in the room. I had such a great time here. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting a quick romantic getaway !

An absolutely BEAUTIFUL boutique hotel in the heart of Big Sur. I stayed here with my husband for our honeymoon, and it was really lovely. We stayed in the Adobe Motor Lodge, King room. We had a private entrance through our courtyard, which I really appreciated and was perfect for enjoying the evening weather with a bottle of wine. The room was very well-​furnished, and it was just so pretty that it kind of makes me want to redecorate my whole home with mid-​century modern furniture, muted paint colors, and natural finishes. There was also a fireplace that I wish we could have enjoyed, but we were there in the summer.
My only real complaint about the room is that there was no air conditioning. This is not normally a problem in Big Sur because the weather is so nice, but while we were there it was pretty warm (upper 70’s in the evening), and our fan was broken in our room. So it did get a little warm at night. Also, I felt like the woman checking us in was kind of rude, but the woman we talked to at the front desk when we left was extremely nice, so I think it depends on who you’re talking to.
At the front desk, they serve coffee and iced tea in the afternoon and really GOOD coffee in the morning. Definitely stop there before heading out for hiking or exploring.
Overall, this hotel is very romantic, modern, and hip. I would recommend for any couple looking for a romantic getaway in Big Sur!

Had a fantastic time in Big Sur… with the help of Glen Oaks!
We stayed in the Fireside Lodge King room. Loved the décor and vibe of the surrounding. It comes with a private outdoor area, with a double-​sided fireplace to be viewed in and outdoors.
The floor in the bathroom has radiant heating, so super nice when stepping out of the shower:)
Big Sur coffee and pastry shop is about a mile down the road for your morning brew. The peach strudel was amazeballs as was their coffee.
Glen Oaks does have a trail in the back of the property, which has you hiking alongside the river and there are a couple of quaint beaches that you can easily access.
Ordering dinner from the Roadhouse was tasty and literally across the street from Glen Oaks.
If staying in Big Sur, this is the place to be. Great location to state park and beach.

After reading about Glen Oaks in a sunset magazine article I had to check it out for myself and YES! They DO have private outdoor claw foot tubs! Good luck leaving your room.

One of the most amazing places I’ve ever stepped in to. I spent one very short night at glen oaks in June and it was breathtaking.
Awesome cabins, great ambiance and comfortable service. The relaxation and tranquility of glen oaks is incomparable.
I can’t wait to go back again soon!

OMG, Glen Oaks. We stayed here one night and I swear it felt like I was here for a week due to the wonderful relaxation factor here. We checked in and drove over to the Sycamore Cabin, which I wish I had rented for more than one night. We loved the layout of the cabin: a modest living room with floor to ceiling windows (and a light up fireplace), a small bathroom with a HUGE shower and heated floors, a «kitchenette,» and the big master bedroom, complete with yoga mats and a vornado fan (SQUEEE). I love having a fan in a room for the noise and air circulation — A+!
Our firepit beneath the redwoods was really the best part. So relaxing. I went exploring and quickly found a path down to the river, where I then found 3 chairs on the «beach» where you could watch the river flow by in comfort. Sooooo relaxing — I sat here for quite awhile in the evening and the next morning totally undisturbed.
The Roadhouse was closed for dinner so we had dinner at Big Sur Bakery, which was awesome. While there, I bought a bag of marshmallows to avoid spending $ 9 on the s’mores kit in the room. Hubby built a fire and we just had the most relaxing time sitting outside in the bug-​free redwoods. I know there were other cabins about, but we felt totally private outside our cabin. So nice!
And omg, the bed. The pillows, sheets, and mattress were divine. I slept like a champ in the Sycamore Cabin! The next morning, we took our time getting up and were luckily granted a late checkout — yay!
The next morning we walked to breakfast at the Roadhouse through the redwood forest, which was absolutely glorious and beautiful.
We truly had a romantic wonderful stay at Glen Oaks Big Sur, and I think in most part, thanks to selecting the Sycamore Cabin. We truly didn’t hear or see anyone else except at the restaurant. This was perfect for our anniversary! I posted a map of the property to Unilocal so you can look and see where all the cabins/​rooms are in relation to one another. Ours was not on the river, but it was super easy walking distance to the river and the beach with the chairs.

Really not impressed with Glen Oaks. The cabins are nothing more than a detached hotel room — and definitely not worth the money you’ll be paying to stay there.
Staff was friendly, cabins were clean. Other than that… it was nothing much

Unapologetically Hostile Towards Families
So sad. This was our second time staying at Glen Oaks. We had a splendid time last year in the Sycamore Cabin. This time that particular cabin was booked so I reserved the Redwood Cabin.
Upon arrival, the lady at check in took a look at our 5 year old and said that children are not recommended in the redwood cabin because of the shared wall. She said people come here for a romantic getaway.
I said, «what do you want us to do?» She said there was nothing we could do as the single cabins were all booked. So I asked her why she would say an unwelcoming thing like that and she said, «for next time so you know.»
The next morning at the Roadhouse restaurant the waitress disregarded our son’s breakfast order. She brought food only for my husband and I. When my husband asked about son’s order she shrugged, turned away and said in an absurdly dismissive way, «I’ll let the kitchen know.»
We didn’t eat at the roadhouse again after that.
Today at check out I dropped off the key and asked for the general manager’s contact info. I mentioned how we were treated at check in. This staff member said we were «lucky to not have been turned away» because of our child. I swear to god. What is WRONG with these people?
We’re done with Big Sur. Next time we’ll bring our talents to Yosemite where families reign!!!

Amazing location! The rooms are nice and great that they don’t have TVs! The heated bathroom floors are heavenly!

Just a few comments:
–Walls are thin.
–fireplace can make a random noises. This kept us up at night.

The lodgings are terrific, but the staff are terribly rude.
The behavior and general unfriendliness of the staff aren’t commensurate with the $ 400 a night charge.
Big Sur is lovely, stay somewhere that will give you a pleasant experience.

Loved this place. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights on our honeymoon in little cabin #8. Everything was so beautiful and rustic, couldn’t have been a better experience. The cabin was intimate, the bed was comfortable, staff very accommodating. We were right on this peaceful stream and the air is so fresh and crisp. Great location for restaurants and attractions in the area as well. Really appreciated the staff accepting my request for cabin #8 since that is what I read was the best one. Amazing experience here, hope to be back one day.

First, I want to say that I had NO idea how expensive Big Sur was. So I was shocked when our rooms were close to $ 400 a night.
But I guess that’s just the area. The next step up on hotel is the Ventana which is close to, if not over $ 1000 a night. So $ 400 a night doesn’t seem that bad!
If this hotel were any other place I would say it’s overpriced for what you get, but since we have established that Big Sur is overpriced, I will say it’s just right for what you pay.
Updated bathrooms which are great. Nice showers with great water pressure. Rooms are clean and tastefully decorated. There’s a real retro feel to the hotel. I love the yoga mat they provided and the ice tea and water in the lobby.
There isn’t an iron in your room. So either iron before you come or you’ll need to borrow one from the front desk.
There isn’t air conditioning which usually is fine but of course we were there during a heat wave and were dying. Our room was closest to the highway and unfortunately we were woken early every morning due to needing to sleep with the window wide open and the noise of the highway.
There is a great little breakfast place next door at the Ripplewood Resort (don’t get excited. It’s more of a cabin/​campsite than a «resort»), and there is a little market there too if you want snacks or forget some essentials.
All in all a nice experience and a decent value for the area.

We stayed in the Cottage.
Private. Comfortable. Pretty much everything you’d want in a little cabin in the woods. We didn’t have neighbors up against our walls, so I can’t speak to the thinness of the walls that seem to bother some guests. I will say, it was pitch black and quiet when we wanted it to be, and that’s fantastic by me.
I’m cracking up reading about needing «more to do» at night… the lack of TVs, etc. We’re you confused as to where you were? (surrounded by woods) Are you/​your traveling companions that boring? It’s like the toddler that the parent has to shove the iPad in front of so they’ll sit still — hilarious.
Or the people complaining about other guests having fantastic sex… LOL. Lo Siento Mucho that it wasn’t you. People = funny. They need to create a feature on Unilocal where you can mock other reviews. I’d pay for that add-​on.
The only complaint we had was the water heater crapped out temporarily, and I hesitate to complain — they were on it in an instant, and did something very nice for us due to the inconvenience. The Wife wants to just move in there and bag this whole San Diego life we have going. Can’t say that I blame her.

Scrabble, Jenga and s’more kits in the room? Yes.
Whereas Deetjen’s will always have my preference for its old world, deep woods, lockless charm, Glen Oaks is a close second for being the mod-​deco antithesis in the heart of zero cell signals country. Blink and you’ll miss the sign marking, what, 15 rooms of sleek, stylish rooms that reek of Euroluxe. Is that a thing? Is now.
Heated stone floors in the bathroom, thermostat-​activated fireplace, see-​through fridge with Brita pitchers and the aforementioned board games give enough creature comfort to help you forget there’s no TV. BUT WHAT ABOUT PRETTY LITTLE LIARS I CANT MISS A SINGLE EPISODE DONT YOU GET IT!!! Relax Ponch, there’s free wifi, so you can app in to your DVR and make sure Facebook punks don’t spoil the big reveal. (It’s the nerdy chick!*)
Very comfortable bed. Very. The shower pummels your back achy from moderate hiking, while washing away high quality shampoo/​body wash from your now rejuvenated self. Sure, the carpets have seen their fair share of tar-​slicked shoe soles, but you won’t notice between steamy shower jaunts and steamier bedcapades. Which reminds me: don’t stay here with your brah, brah. Too much quaintness and romance for buddy crashing — couples only!
And if the night falls cool (which it will), pop out to the fire pit and meet some other mirror pairs feeling the same greatness you are. S’mores while basking in the afterglow, amirite? Wouldn’t know. Never made it out of the room.
*I have now idea about any PLL spoilers. If I’m right, it was a lucky guess. And I should totally write for terrible post-​tween programming.
