Burrito bar is amazing. My wife and I plowed through breakfast(chorizo and egg) and carne asada burritos. Then washed it down with a smoothie. The carne asada contained nice, big chunks of meat, while the chorizo was a perfect level of spicy. They didn’t skimp on egg either. Each burrito contained a veritable garden of veggies as well.

Burritos from the burrito bar are a total score! We were going to eat at the restaurant next door but the wait was too long. Burritos were super fresh. Will definitely stop on the way back down the coast!

I cannot believe I am telling folks that a General Store that has a burrito shop in it is any good. My family and I were driving home from Monterey and we agreed no more stops for fast food chains. The restaurant next door was closed for a wedding and they suggested the food in back of the General Store. That was a correct call. You walk to the back pick up a burrito order slip 4 choices of everything to build your personal perfect burrito. Organic chicken, spinach tortilla, filled with bastmati rice, black beans, cheddar cheese and sour cream. Bliss burrito I would say in the redwoods next to the sea.

You know, after a long couple hours of driving along PCH, having a nice stop by the general store in Big Sur might just seen like another pit stop. But no. It’s so much more than that! Spacious parking in the lot. Restrooms available(one at a time). After that, make your way into the general store, and in the back is where the magic happens. The Burrito man. Pretty delish. Grab a sheet and check off the items you want in your tortilla wrapped slice of amazingness. I had the tomato basil tortilla, which admittedly didn’t have too much flavor beyond that of a regular tortilla, but that’s okay! Generous portions and awesome food make up for this tiny shortcoming. And of course, it being a general store means you can grab a drink to go w/your food. Now, the fun begins. Grab your goodies and head round back, down the stairs, and into the little creek/stream running through the place. They have a couple large wooden chairs for you to sit on. Enjoy your Burrito along w/the soothing sound of the free flowing river. Don’t rush it. Taste your delish food and relish the calm of the shade and the cool of the water. It’s an awesome place to be. And please. When you’re done, don’t forget to pick up your trash on the way out yeah?

Ok so, part of me wants to give the burrito bar 4 stars but let’s be real, it really only deserves 3. I’m so glad we found this place after driving along the coast for a couple hours. My BF was starving and informed me that we’d be stopping at the first sight of food. Well, burrito bar it was! We ordered the Chicken Cesar wrap and Thai chicken wrap. The chicken wrap tasted like tuna haha but if it wasn’t tuna, I think it was canned chicken! I’m not totally disgusted with this if it is canned chicken, mainly because they’re out in the middle of nowhere so I’ll cut them some slack. The Thai chicken wrap… I’m not sure what makes it Thai?! Maybe a spice they use but it might as well be a Thai burrito considering it has beans and rice. The burritos are $ 9.45 which is definitely pricey but that’s to be expected. The store itself has lots of food and different essentials so I guess it’s worth checking out. I’d probably come back to the burrito bar, but order something else. Oh yea btw… the wraps are massive!

The General Store is my go-to stop on days I am on photo shoots along the Big Sur coast. The interior is rustic, kind of like you might expect a trading post along the Oregon Trail in the 1800’s to have looked. The floor is a little uneven so look down as you shop. Ample parking separates this store from others along this stretch of Highway 1. The staff I have encountered are genuinely nice people. Yesterday I met the owner. He stuck out because he was the only person in the region wearing slacks and a business casual dress shirt. Obviously a professional that cares about his business. He has a great spot and an enthusiastic crew. The store is within yards of the Big Sur River. If you stop in be sure to take the path and few steps to view the river setting.

Very surprised! We decided to check out the general store before having lunch and we ended up ordering burritos from the burrito bar instead. I ordered the Thai chicken wrap which was actually very disappointing and I do not recommend it BUT my wife ordered the carnitas burrito and that was amazing!!! To give a little more detail of my Thai wrap: was mainly filled with rice and lettuce, the chicken had no flavor and I could not taste the peanut sauce they spoke of… Like I said it wasn’t good! My wife’s burrito was wonderful, it was filled with all the good stuff, pico de gallo, guacamole, beans, sour cream and carnitas. It was delicious! I would go back for that or even the carne asada one. Definitely a nice option compared to the nicer more expensive restaurants in the area.

Stopped here after a long day out. Grabbed a carnitas burrito. It was really good and it gets made to order. You fill out a little order form. I gave it 4 stars because it was a little too oily for my liking. Friendly service here too.

The burrito bar is definitely worth checking out while driving through Big Sur! I had the best burrito of my life here! I ordered a carnitas burrito with a spinach tortilla, Spanish rice, sour cream, spicy salsa, cilantro, and avocado and I fell in love. It was loaded with fresh stuff and they don’t skimp on ingredients either. The picnic chairs by the stream at the back of the store gave a nice shaded place to eat and relax. The general store has a great selection of beverages and the Heart Beat and local arts stores next door have some neat stuff worth checking out.

Found this burrito bar accidentally. Amazing made-to-order burritos. Huge portion and was ready within five minutes. If you’re on the 1 traveling or staying in big sur definitely stop by for a bomb burrito.

5 stars for the Burrito Bar! The burrito was huge with tons of fresh ingredients. It was so delicious I wanted to eat the entire thing but I figured waddling out wouldn’t be so attractive. If you’re driving up the coast and are hungry I really think this is one of the few options for eats so I def. recommend checking it out.

Nice General Store with lots of character. Surprisingly good selection of beer. The burrito bar is very good. They have early morning breakfast burritos the ones we had were definitely hand prepared, including the ingredients. Great potatoes which well perfectly seasoned, sauteed scallions, thick bacon and the egg was fried and made part of the wrap rather than being scrambled with all the other ingredients. One of the best I’ve had and I’m from San Diego.

Like most general stores in remote ares, the items are a bit pricier than a super market but that is is to be expected The true highlight of this place is the Burrito Bar at the Big Sur River Inn General Store. This place serves fresh burritos made to order, daily from 11AM till 7PM. If you are on a budget I recommend ordering up a burrito buying a cold beer and taking it out back so you can eat along one of the many chairs in the river. We talked to the cashier and they explained that as long as the beer can is inside a paper bag then it is OK to take your drink out there. Sometimes the restaurant next door has live music, making your eating experience at the river even more pleasant. Either way its a good location to stock up on supplies and relax by the river. Plus the river provides great photo opportunities. I would consider this is place one of Big Sur’s hidden secrets for travelers on a budget who want to enjoy a cheap meal in a beautiful setting. Remember to pick up after yourself so others can enjoy as well.

Pricey Goods, but Available! Plan ahead, if you do not want to pay the higher prices. They have a nice range of items, mostly food goods. Nice General Store, next to the River Inn Resort and Big Sur Village Shops. Down by the river or creek, enjoy yourself and relax. =)
