Specialties

We specialize in awesome handmade leather items and leatherworking tools and supplies. We stock leather hides, patterns, tools and hardware. We do repairs including tack and saddles. We also teach leatherworking classes.

We hand tool designs as well as laser onto leather. We do LARP and SCA gear, cosplay and steampunk items as well. We make custom motorcycle gear including chaps, vest, saddle bags and hand tooled seats. We also sew on patches and replace zippers.

History

Established in 2009.

Started as a hobby then moved to selling at craft shows. Opened retail shop in 2014. We are a member of the Maine Craft Association, and Made in Maine program.

Business Owner

Mike started leather working in 2009 when he took a job with Tandy Leather in Albuquerque New Mexico. In 2011 Mike moved to Maine and started selling his leather goods at shows. In 2014 Mike was one of the winners of the Heart of Biddeford main street challenge. In April 2014 the shop opened for business.

Mike is also a veteran of the USMC.

Went in and Unilocal was actually there taking pics or video. They stopped until I was done talking to the owner. I wasn’t sure what I wanted when I went in there but had some things in mind. I ended up buying a bikers wallet with the chain and such. He had holsters there that were samples of what he could do and a few belts and several other leather items. Most of his things seem to be made to order and he doesn’t have every holster for every gun there but will make it for you. He said it would only take a couple of weeks to make one of the holsters I inquired about. I was on vacation when I went there so didn’t order one right then because I can order them online or on the phone once I get back now that I have seen what he can do. The pricing was good for the items I looked at and the the materials they were made of looked like they would last a long time. I will probably end up buying a shoulder holster from him soon. He said he could make it anywhere from plain to elaborate so I’ll have to find some design first.

I stopped into Desert Moon Leather unannounced with no appointment and made and inquiry about having some alterations done to my motorcycle vest. Within two hours they fabricated side panel extenders with eyelets and had it completed. The craftsmanship was impeccable. The leather and interior nylon fabric perfectly matched that of my vest. I would recccomend these gentleman to anyone. They’re extremely talented and very friendly.

Not surprisingly, Desert Moon Leather sells leather. Belts, bags, tools, and supplies for leather craft hobbyists are all here. There are also leather working classes and workshops for making things like cell phone holders. I don’t know too much about leather and don’t have much use for it beyond a couple of belts and a pair of shoes, but it looked like there was some quality stuff here.
This is obviously a small business (that’s a good thing) and the owner is a really friendly guy who’s trying to figure out what people want to buy. If you’re looking for leather, visit Desert Moon and see what they can do for you. Now that I’m thinking of it, the seats in my car need to be reupholstered. I wonder if they do that.
