Dr. Cohan is board-​certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is certified as an HIV Specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. In recognition of his many contributions to the science and practice of medicine and to the community, Dr. Cohan was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.) in 2003.

A Philadelphia native, Dr. Cohan received his undergraduate degrees in English & Biology from Amherst College, did postgraduate research at Cambridge University in England and completed his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Cohan has received special training in HIV care from San Francisco General Hospital.

Dr. Cohan’s medical training coincided with the early years of the AIDS epidemic and, while most of his medical colleagues were shying away from this devastating and highly stigmatizing disease, Dr. Cohan devoted his medical efforts to combating this new plague and caring for desperately ill and often neglected patients. After 25 years on the front lines of the HIV/​AIDS epidemic, Dr. Cohan is now nationally recognized as a leader in HIV-​related healthcare & research.

Since 2004, Dr. Cohan has returned to his roots as a primary care Internal Medicine physician serving a wide variety of adult clients at the Robertson Diagnostic Center in Beverly Hills.

Everything written here is true. Dr, Cohan is the best. Prior to being Gary’s patient, I avoided medical care, it was always such a hassle. Not so at this practice, scheduling, billing and receiving care are all easy and efficient!
Gary’s encouragement and reasoning about annual physicals has had me in there regularly for many years, and the discovery of a few issues, since caught early will not reach their dangerous potential. He is also readily available on short notice whenever I am not feeling well. On the few occasions when I have had to see specialists, however reluctantly, his network is just as excellent as he is. Most of whom, without a referral from Gary, I would not have been able to access. And, Dr, Cohan does not refer out and check out, while another Dr. may be treating me, he is still managing my care, keeping in touch with both me and the specialist.
He is just a good person and fantastic physician. He is kind, smart, patient, funny, communicative, trustworthy, friendly, approachable… I think you get my point!

I have friends who are doctors and, with all due respect to my friends, I’d see Gary over my doctor friends any day. He isn’t the kind of doctor you turn to because you’re sick and can’t avoid a trip to the doctor’s office; you go because you have a doctor who can truly manage your health. He’ll spend as much time with you as you need, is relentlessly warm and funny, always down-​to-​earth, listens without judging and just plain knows his stuff. I quite literally trust this guy (and the awesome folks in his office) with my life. He is a bit on the pricey side and doesn’t accept insurance (though he will bill your insurance so you see at least a little money back) so be prepared to pay a reasonable amount out of pocket. But if you’re fortunate enough to not have to skimp on preventative care I don’t think there’s a better choice in Los Angeles.

Dr. Cohan has been my trusted physician for more than 15 years. I just left his office because I have had a bad cough. He checked me out and gave some medicine and I feel better– confident I am on the road to recovery. That’s how it is with Dr. Cohan. You feel sick and something is wrong and then you go see him and he helps. I am always confident with his advice. He is a warm and intelligent health care provider with the cutting edge of science at his fingertips and an excellent bedside manner. I love his office staff. You’re lucky if you have a doctor this good!

For over twenty years Dr Gary Cohan has kept me in tip-​top shape. «Gary» practices the kind of medicine that is deigned for long term well being. When something comes up short notice, I always get his attention quickly and in no time at all, he has personalized a get-​well strategy. As a «mid-​lifer» my excellent health is proof enough for me of Gary’s highest degree of medical expertise.
When I am out of town Gary and his office remain interested in my healthcare and continue to support my healthcare needs. When Gary is away his network of referral doctors have been available to care for my needs. It has also been my experience that any referral from Gary’s office has been well vetted.
Not to be overlooked kudos to his nursing staff Marien and Mary who play by his rules — get the job done right! Thank you very much ladies for taking such good care of me for so many years.
During the past twenty yeas I have recommended Gary to many other friends and have never heard a chilly word. I am with one of the blue plans and the office is always helpful with filing my paperwork. Yes, private practice healthcare costs more than an HMO but the benefits are worth every dime for me and my busy urban lifestyle.

I often tease Dr. Cohan that he’s my longest relationship! For nearly 20 years I’ve driven 50 miles (roundtrip in city traffic) for my medical appointments. I can honestly tell you that he’s worth all the trouble! I bring in my «laundry list» of complaints and he patiently goes through each, one by one. You are never rushed with Dr. Cohan, he totally gives of himself to his patients. Never once in all the years that I’ve gone to him has he ever answered a phone or have been interrupted by one of his staff knocking on the door. Your time with him is your time. And when it’s time to leave, you always feel better because of his bright and enthusiastic demeanor. I could go on with examples of his great medical skills but what I like most about him is that Dr. Cohan takes care of you because he cares. That alone, is some pretty darn good medicine.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Gary’s since the days when he was part of a large medical group. I was referred to him as I was tired of a doctor who had appointments available in 3 weeks; not the same day or day after. I wanted a doctor who would return calls, or at least of a staff member return calls. I wanted a doctor who would spend more than 6 ½ minutes with you and write you a RX to get you going out the door. I wanted a doctor who helped you ask questions you didn’t know you should ask. Gary Cohan is all of that, and more. When he left the large medical group, I had a choice, stay with the group or choose to leave and join Gary, and I chose Gary.
When I need an appointment, that means I’m sick or there’s a problem and I want to see him now… and I can and I do. That means the same day most of the time. I don’t have to wait in the lobby only to be transferred to an exam room and wait; I am able to come in at the time designated and I see either his nurse (Marien) or Gary right away.
His office is managed very professionally by Mary; and the hassle of insurance form completion is done for you… you sign and you are done. I don’t have to worry about spending only 6 ½ minutes; I am comfortable talking with Gary and he in turn, asks me things I don’t know to ask. When I leave and may have a RX, it is called in and when I hit the pharmacy, they have it and I don’t have to hassle there either.
I have referred 4 friends to Gary and they all remain patients of his as do I. I have the ability to choose my health care, especially my elective care. Gary is most concerned about living well and staying healthy which I find most important in my life. Hard to measure the reward in terms of dollars, but in terms of a healthy life and feeling my best, my vote remains with Dr. Gary and his professional staff.

Star ratings are best for movies and restaurants, not near enough for someone who is literally responsible for saving your life. Since September of 2007 I had not one but FOUR major medical issues, three of which required advanced surgical procedures. Not only was Dr GARY responsible for diagnosing them, but also referring me to the best possible associates without delay, and has continued to follow up with me every few months since then to this day. He’s like the fictional Dr. House on TV, only sane and rational to a fault! Had I not gone to Dr. Gary i am absolutely certain I would not be here to type this small token of my appreciation.

Dr. Cohan is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met. He has been my doctor for almost 10 years now. Although, it is very difficult for me to just call him a doctor. He is like «family» to me and my partner who also sees him. Please let me clarify, I don’t mean like the «family» you dread seeing at family gatherings especially Thanksgiving. Think more like a close family friend you want to go have drinks with. But be prepared for him to tell you to limit it to just two.
I guarantee you will be hard pressed to find a doctor with a better beside manner. Even those turn your head and cough examinations along with all of the other dreaded south of the border ones don’t seem quite so bad here.
All joking aside, when you are a patient of Dr. Gary’s, you get more than just a doctor who cares. You get a highly qualified physician who runs on-​time, doesn’t rush you through your appointment, answers questions, and is up-​to-​date on all of the latest protocols in medicine. He is easily accessible via RelayHealth and can in some instances do a web visit which is a great timesaver.
Manager Mary and Nurse Marien are a dream to deal with and they provide excellent personalized service. No front office nightmares here. If you’ve been reading other reviews you know what I’m talking about.

Dr. Cohan deserves way more than five stars. So if you need an awesome doctor he’s the best man for the job.

I used to go to the Pacific Oaks Medical Group, until Dr. Cohan left. I did not want to continue there, and so I decided to stay in Dr. Cohan’s care! And I am so glad that I have. He’s always wearing a a smile on his face, and with his nurse and office staff Mary, I always feel at home or one of the family. I never feel rushed at all or uncomfortable, and it’s nice to always finish my appt, sitting in front of him at his desk, than sitting on a sterile hospital table/chair/desk…what is that anyway? I have been his patient for at least 10 years, and I highly recommend Him.
Parking could be better as far as price, but there’s metered parking on the street. They will do your insurance forms for you, and since he is in NO network, you will have to pay a percentage of est. costs. I have insurance but I can’t use a co-​payment which is the downside, but from what’s out there~ the scale is balanced with pros and cons. Appts are necessary, but I have been directed to another doctor in the same office,

hands down, the best doctor i have ever had. not only is dr. gary cohan brilliant (he constantly stays up to date with the latest research,) but his personality and bedside manner are second to none. i never feel rushed or ignored, he is ALWAYS punctual, and his office staff are the definition of accommodating. i cannot tell you, how many times i’ve had them assist me with insurance forms… but that’s the level of care i’ve come to expect, as a patient of dr. cohan’s.
