Gagosian Gallery

So you want to see some modern art but the Broad says they are nice enough to let you in three months from now… That’s how I felt so I scratched my itch and went to the Gagosian instead!
They are currently running their 20^th Anniversary Show which showcases a piece or two from some of their favorite artists. It’s a first rate collection of pieces that leaves you wanting so much more, and that’s a good thing. When someone gives you a chip with avocado on it, one chip with guacamole is just not enough, right? Same with this exhibit. There’s Jeff Koons (more on display at The Broad). There’s a mind fracking black sheep with gold horns in formaldehyde by Damien Hirst. Cy Twombly is the only repeater with a painting and drawings on display. Ed Ruscha? Roy Lichenstein? Takashi Murakami? Urs Fischer? Why yes.
I last came here in 2007 for the Damien Hirst «Butterflies» show. AMAZING. One of the best shows I have ever seen anywhere.

There are two main rooms, but don’t forget the third and fourth smaller viewing rooms on the 2^nd floor. They always provide a list of works at the front desk. Entry is free.
The Gagosian is a commercial gallery so they have outposts in New York, Paris, Rome, London, Hong Kong, Geneva, Athens. If you want to see what is hot or trending in contemporary art, the Gagosian is the place to be.

Very nice gallery.
Great space.
They have major artists and nice opening events.
Good location. If you’re in the «Golden Triangle» in BH, it’s an easy walk over.
Convenient to stop in during a show and plenty of restaurants & cafes nearby.

I’ve been here twice. It is a big space, well put together. I would like to be able to afford one of the Ruscha paintings I looked at… Too bad they are like 15 million, Im guessing the price… but must be in the millions. This dealer had his start in LA/​NY, so it’s nice to see him keep a gallery here.

A leader in the contemporary art world, Gagosian Gallery is by far my favorite gallery in Los Angeles. The gallery is enormous and is architecturally stunning. The white walls serve as the perfect backdrop for any art work featured in this space. They always have wonderful shows and never disappoint.

The space is lovely but I have to question the pieces on exhibit. The William Eggleston show was clearly chosen because of the artists imminent departure from this earth which will undoubtedly double his prices. I understand that Mr. Gagosian is a businessman and I respect his abilities in that area but it sure would be refreshing to walk into an LA gallery and see some actual legitimate art. I tire of the art markets insistence on looking backwards instead of forward. Mr Eggleston’s work was neither the first to use color nor the best and the fact that he was one of the first to show in a museum does not impress me in the least. Mr. Gagosian used to be a visionary who saw something in artists that others missed, now, I just find his shows to be a bit like Wal-​Mart, a big brand with little quality or substance and the main spectacle is the people. Sorry. Please try again.

I came here for the William Eggleston exhibit featuring work from his Los Alamos.
The gallery is extremely spacious and curated the work nicely. The receptionists are also very friendly.
There really isn’t anything negative about this gallery except that it’s in the middle of Beverly Hills and the musky smell of arrogance and snobbery can be smelled for miles.
Other than that, it’s a winner.
PARKING TIP: If you are following your GPS, it may take you to a church. This is NOT the gallery– the gallery is not in the church. But DO however, park where that church is then walk down towards the gallery and save yourself the hassle of trying to park in BH.

opening parties = lots of pretty people

This place is such a gem in the middle of Beverly Hills. I was wildly surprised at how much I enjoyed it here. I’m not really into art and I mainly went just to see the James Franco Exhibit, but wow, this place is impressive. I would definitely recommend this to those visiting the vicinity. It’s in a great location as well. Also, there is lots of street parking too.

Beautiful space, great opportunity to see great art.

Great gallery. Classy yet modern. It’s hard to balance out classy art and modern, trendy, fusion art.
I’ll admit. I’m not one of those artistic people. I’d rather buy a work of art than walk around it. But this time it was entertaining. This is one of few galleries I don’t mind walking and «aweing» at.

If you like the best of the best, take a stroll over to Gagosian Gallery. Great artists from a great enterprise!

*** An amazing space and reception for Nancy Rubins. ***
I first stumbled upon a Nancy Rubins sculpture 3 weeks ago
when I was at Aria Hotel Las Vegas,
It is definitely eye-​catching work. So when an art dealer asked
me to come for Rubins opening reception here, I gladly agreed.
Several guests at the reception and the gallery space itself were
actually more interesting than Rubins work shown imho. (haha)
This bi-​level space features four rooms for exhibiting, very nice.
A beautiful piece of contemporary architecture in Beverly Hills.
And the guests? Well I have never seen so many Louboutins,
Manolos, attractive outfits … like an informal runway show. ;)
The few conversations that I had were all very entertaining.
Unfortunately, I can’t say that I was impressed with the exhibit.
I gotta problem with modern art that requires a story to explain
its significance (if any). I’d say the narrative failed to help here.
«Big Edge» at Aria Hotel speaks for itself. This exhibit does not.
The graphite on paper pieces are particularly underwhelming,
yet they did make a fine backdrop for a smashing reception.

I was here for the Franz West show. Parking is close and easy. Staff was not snobby. The exhibition space has two levels. This is a blue chip gallery so the artists in their stable are definitely not starving.

Tasteful Modern Art. Free Wine. Starving Artists. Celebs. Private Collectors.
That’s what you can expect at any opening exhibit at The Gagosian Gallery. The Gagosian Gallery is owned by Larry Gagosian. The gallery’s collection and exhibits focus mostly on 20^th Century Modern Art.
My roommate and I attended the opening which was free to the public of Collaborative Works between Jean Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol back in 2002. The gallery is known for being very selective and procuring rare pieces. The space is very tiny. So you could easily walk in and out in 5 minutes. Complimentary cocktails and wine were served. Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Forlani all attended. At the same time, there were local artists in attendance just to appreciate the art work. And you had me who was there for the free booze! =P
So don’t write off The Gagosian Gallery as a hub for celeb watching and wealthy snobs. The gallery welcomes all.

Designed by Richard Meier, known for the Getty Center stunner, this bright, well-​lit space features blue-​chip modern and contemporary artists such as Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and Richard Serra.

They do great work while making a pile of money. I wish more big businesses thought this way.
The recent Anselm Kiefer show is better than museum quality.

LA chapter of debatably the worlds preeminent gallery. Gagosian represents all the big-​name living artists, and a lot of their shows are better than museums.
This is where the celebs buy their art, and you should definitely try to go to an opening. Very A-​list affairs.
