Balayage By Matt

I have been seeing Matt for over a year now, and could not be happier. He is truly an artist.
For all you out there that need some Balayage 101, well, I am here for you! Balayage is a French word meaning to paint or to sweep. It can also be called a free hand technique, as no foil is used to set the color. It allows for sun-​kissed, natural looking highlights. Less is more, and a true Balayage expert will place the color to suit your skin tone and really accentuate your features. It grows out naturally and beautifully, which means: low maintenance!
After seeing Matt, the compliments just don’t stop. He is AMAZING, super funny, sweet, and he works at one of the hottest salons in LA. His assistants are fabulous as well. I promise you won’t be disappointed… and everyone will have to know who your colorist is. Keep his card handy.

I’ve been going to Matt Rez for over a year and I want to update my review to say how happy I am to have finally found a hair colorist who I can trust to do beautiful natural-​looking blonde highlights without damaging my fine hair. I’ve tried others, and I have to say Matt does the best balayage and ombré highlights in LA. If you want natural sunkissed highlights without damaging your hair, the search is over. He did highlights on my hair yesterday and my hair is shinier and than when I walked in. (That’s not always the case with others colorists who specialize in the ombré look) You know you are in good hands when people stop you on the street to ask where you get your hair done.

Matt is an incredible colorist and the chilliest guy you will ever meet. I went to him with virgin hair and vow to only use him for the rest of my hair-​dyeing life. He eased me into adding blonde and softened my look so much. I would trust him with any hair color I attempt in the future. Now I feel like a better, more approachable & more Californian version of my old self. Never going back!

Love my hair color! I found Matt Rez after searching Instagram photos and website photos of hair color that was natural looking while also standing out. I loved the photos of his work. I booked an appointment with him based on that research.
I came to him with very damaged blond hair. He spent time with me talking about my wants and his recommendations. Very pleased that Matt took the time to listen and have a full discussion with me.
The shade and placement is perfect. My hair is tricky and often comes out brassy. No brassy with Matt!!! I have blond hair with natural looking dimensions. I was able to go 4 months before a touch up based on his placement of the highlights.
I’ve had 3 visits with Matt and my hair is noticeably healthier and finally started growing without frustrating breakage. Every suggestion he’s made has turned out great! Matt’s incredible attention to detail is unlike any other colorist that’s done my hair. It has made a wonderful difference in my color. It’s nice to have complete trust in your colorist. I’ve found that trust in Matt.

Matt is an artist! I know when he touches my hair I will leave the salon loving it. He is meticulous and he and his staff put out a great vibe. I love the whole experience and most of all my hair! Thank you Matt!

Wow! So excited about my hair. After trying out so many people over the past few years, finally feel like I’ve got the look I’ve being going for. Matt has a whole different approach than anywhere I’ve been. He corrected all the problems and left me with a natural but striking new color and cut. His assistants are super nice as well and the salon is beautiful. The process does take awhile but they are working on you the entire time. Very happy. Will be back.

My usual stylist stopped doing hair when he started his own skincare line, so I was on the hunt for a new stylist. He referred me to Matt and told me Matt does some of the best coloring/​highlights that he has seen. I trusted his judgement so I gave Matt a visit. From the moment I walked in for my consultation, Matt was extremely friendly, warm and honest with what he could do with my hair. I wish I had the before photo to show you the magic that he worked on my hair. I went from a dark brown (with reddish tints), to a beautiful red and it’s the best color I have ever had (I color my hair often and do drastic changes). He managed to do a drastic change without sacrificing the health of my hair. Matt is amazing and his talent results in gorgeous hair. It is now the best accessory I could ever have. I’m so in love with his work. He is truly amazing and I highly recommend. I’m lucky to have discovered his work.

My hair has been victim of terrible hands in the past. I’m so happy to have met Matt. It took me 2 years of struggle and disappointments to finally meet someone who knew what he was doing. You know what they say… «You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince» haha.

Let me just start off by saying that Matt is a hair color wizard. I found him on Instagram after I decided I needed to break-​up with the stylist I had been going to for years because the color was never what I wanted despite explaining each time. After tracking down Matt, I made an appointment to go seem for a consultation. I explained that my hair is very dark and easily picks up reds, oranges and copper tones when lightening it, which I absolutely hate. Well, Matt and his assistant did an AMAZING job paying particular attention to the front pieces to ensure none of the yucky orangy colors pulled through. He did a fantastic job and I have gone to him several times now. Yes, this salon is expensive, but in some cases you get what you pay for. I promise that if you go to Matt for color, you will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend seeing Matt if you are looking for a change in your color. I brought in photos and he pretty much nailed it (on the first try). He gave me a natural warm blonde look with a bit of edge… Not too drastic from what I had but enough of a change. Most importantly, it was exactly what I asked for. I’ve already booked my next appointment. Thanks so much Matt!

Matt is an insanely talented colorist and the ONLY person I trust to touch my hair.
I have very dark brown hair which other «stylists» have attempted to lighten in the past and they ended up damaging my hair and turning it orange.
Needless to say, I was so hesitant to try going lighter after my bad experiences. I am SO GLAD I found Matt. He turned my hair from blah brown to bronde beauty in ONE sitting. He is seriously so amazingly talented and knowledgable with color. He caters his work to each individual client and knows how to lighten with little to no damage to the hair. So glad I found him!!! 4 sessions in and never turning back.

I won’t let anyone but Matt touch my –now sun kissed, healthy– tresses anymore.

Matt is awesome!!! I had the fortunate luck of being added to his schedule unexpectedly and he could not have been any nicer and more accommodating! Him and his team were super attentive throughout my appointment and I am so happy with my color! It’s the best it’s ever looked!
I know color can be tricky and time consuming but after showing a few photos and talking about my desired color, he nailed it on the first go!!!
What was also nice was he spends actual time with you and is so personable and friendly… A lot of colorists pack them in and maybe spends 10 mins on you. Personally, I prefer Matt’s experience!

You know… it’s funny… you know those people you meet in life… the ones that resonate with you… that strike a chord… that stay with you forever? because of their energy… this is honestly my experience when I went to Matt. I feel like I’ve known him forever… he’s just that kind of person. Kind, warm-​hearted, professional, thoughtful, interested, funny, and REALLY hard-​working. I just have a lot of respect for him even though we’ve only met once.
I initially found Matt via Instagram… Like many people, you scour IG, and you look for through a ton of photos of hair… it can be a little overwhelming picking the «right» colorist.
I had virgin hair and had never gotten my hair colored until recently, where I had it highlighted in OC. I liked it, but I wanted something more drastic. I have dark brown hair naturally and wanted a dramatic change fast. I really wanted to go back to my baby blonde hair. After spending months contemplating who I’d go see in LA, I kept feeling a good feeling about Matt, especially after reading reviews and seeing his amazing work through pictures. I sent him an email and sent him my current hair and baby photo pics, and he suggested he would need to see me in-​person to «come up with a plan».
While I hated to drive all the way to LA for a short consult, I loved the fact he said he wanted to come-​up «w/​a plan». That was right up my alley! So off I went! I’m a perfectionist and I loved that he was not going to make a decision on-​the-​spot after meeting me, for a major color change. When I went up to LA, Matt and his awesome assistant Erica met with me. I explained what my goal was and Erica took notes. The plan was set and I headed back up the following week, with the expectation that I’d be spending the entire day in the salon.
When I went back, I was late because of traffic, but Matt was so understanding. Over the course of the next 11 hours (yes, 11)…I got to know both Matt and Erica really well. Tim was also awesome. I went through about 4 processes and never felt as though Matt was actually working on various others throughout the day. Both he and Erica were always attentive to me, making sure I was ok, making sure I ate something and got me food, always «super obsessive» to the timers they would set for each «step» in the process. Matt is undeniably a perfectionist with serious attention to detail!
One thing I will say is that Matt is very BUSY, (a great thing because you know he’s in high-​demand), and he is the hardest worker EVER! I’ve never seen such dedication to one’s craft — he and Erica are at the salon most days 10+ hours… yet you can’t tell. You would never guess if he’s tired, feel rushed, or stressed. When I left the salon, he was still working on clients, and had at least a couple hours to go. It was pretty phenominal… and impressive. I never felt as though I was neglected at all in the process! :)
After my amazing, gorgeous, beautiful ashy blonde color was done, Jack cut my hair and did an amazing job. I wanted him to cut my hair, because over the course of my 11 hours there, I watched him cut other client’s hair throughout the day, and he was like Edward Scissorhands. He did an amazing and very precise cut.
Overall, I could not have asked for a better experience that day, and cannot wait to go back and see my new «friends». My color is gorgeous and I’m in love with my dramatic new look. I felt like a princess. Admittedly, I felt nervous that I’d be going to a «factory» going up to LA, esp to a top colorist like Matt, but it was not that way at all. BEST EXPERIENCE EVER… I read someone else call Matt a «Color GOD»…and I couldn’t agree more!

I’m not sure what can be said about Matt that hasn’t already been said! He is nothing short of a hair styling GOD.
I first saw Matt after a horrendous encounter at another salon left me with orange streaks in my hair. I was frantic and called Matt after seeing his amazing work on Instagram. Not only did he reverse the atrocious damage done by my previous stylist, but he made my hair a million times better. He is seriously an artist and takes his time analyzing and planning every piece of your hair.
The result is absolute perfection! He is insanely talented– see my pictures for a taste of how talented he is! He can practically read your mind and turn a vague «I thought I might want to go a little lighter or something?» into the perfect hair color that you’ve always wanted but couldn’t put into words. It looks unbelievably natural and he colors it in a way where your roots are virtually nonexistent for months. He makes sure your natural color blends perfectly with your new highlights and creates the perfect amount of contrast and dimensions in your hair. It’s actually kind of mind blowing how precise and beautiful his work is!
I have COMPLETE peace of mind when I walk in to see Matt, unlike the feeling I’ve gotten when I sat down in other stylists’ chairs. I’ve happily referred my friends to him, knowing they will leave 110% happy with the results. It doesn’t hurt that his salon is absolutely stunning and luxurious.
I honestly don’t think I can ever go to another stylist after seeing Matt. Ever. If you’re on the fence about booking an appointment, you should do it RIGHT now because he will work wonders on your hair and you will never want to go anywhere else :)

What would I do without Matt. Seriously, he’s the best! I don’t mean to state the obvious, but he definitely knows what he’s doing and he’s just incredible.
I seriously have horse hair and he just works his magic on it. I’ve seen him twice and I just told him I wanted my hair lighter and showed a pic or two and he gave me exactly what I wanted, with his own take of course and with his technique but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
He’s so sweet and reaches out to see how I’m doing and if I need to come in with a toner, etc. he also gives great recommendations if you just reach out for any hair care suggestions etc.
