Description

Specialties

Zut! specializes in regional Mediterranean/New American dishes prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients by Executive Chef Jim Wimborough.

Among our notable starters are the meze platter, local squid stuffed with savory chorizo, and braised white beans with roasted peppers and goat cheese.

Not to be missed are Zut’s seasonal salads and pizzas and exceptionally prepared whole fish, rotisserie meats, and vegetarian entrees. For dessert, diners can enjoy seasonal fresh fruit granita, muscavado pot de crème, and the Zut sundae.

The bar features hand-crafted classic artisan cocktails and creative house cocktails. The extensive wine list features small production grower/producer wineries from California and around the world.

The elegant atmosphere composed of custom chandeliers, cast-glass bar shelf, zinc bar tops, and hand painted mural were crafted by local artists.

Zut is an ideal venue for large groups and private parties.

History

Established in 2010.

Zut! comes from an exceptional restaurant lineage: the location on Fourth St in North Berkeley has re-opened its doors after Christopher Lee’s Italian-inspired Eccolo and the earlier Fourth Street Grill by Mark Miller. Chef Jim Wimborough joins the crew with credentials from Kokkari, Home, Grand Café, Boulevard, and Rubicon in San Francisco and Evvia Estiatorio in Palo Alto.

Owners Denny Abrams and Rick Millikan took up ownership of Zut as part of their larger development of the Fourth Street shopping district. The cuisine is focused on the freshest, local sources available and the ambiance is also ripe with local flavor, featuring the work of craftspeople from the East Bay and surrounding areas. A wraparound mural by Emily Farish adorns the walls, while Paco Prieto’s zinc-topped bar and John Lewis’ custom cast-glass liquor shelving occupy the cocktail area. Crystal chandeliers designed by a Marin artist hang from the ceiling.

Zut is proud to be part the Fourth Street community.

Meet the Manager

Michael P.

Manager

Michael Petrilli is the manager at Zut On Fourth and his career working for family-owned, local-minded restaurants in California has generated a deep passion for food, wine, mixology, and service.

In collaboration with the bar staff, Michael has created seasonal, artisan house cocktails and pre-prohibition classic cocktails featured in the Bar Book. Some outstanding house cocktails include Emilia’s sangria, made with Lambrusco, cassis, and orange liqueur and the Maltese with Ketel One, grapefruit, lemon, mint, and ouzo. Zut also offers hundreds of spirits, focusing on European aperitifs and digestifs.

Michael is also the wine buyer for Zut’s extensive wine list. The wine list specializes in Californian and European small grower/producer wines with an emphasis on sustainable, organic, and biodynamic wine practices.

As a casually elegant restaurant, Zut focuses on providing fine dining service, fresh locally sourced food and beverage, while remaining flexible and friendly.
