Yoga with Maya specializes in private therapeutic yoga sessions. The International Association of Yoga Therapy defines yoga therapy as «the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-​being through the application of the philosophy and practice of Yoga.“[i] Yoga therapy can be part of a holistic treatment for various chronic conditions such as:

low back pain

arthritis (rheumatoid and osteo)

osteoporosis

congested heart failure

high blood pressure

quitting smoking

frozen shoulder

neck pain

fibromyalgia

anxiety and/​or depression

cancer

menopause

asthma

neck pain

hypo/​hyperthyroidism

and many more!

Yoga therapy provides clients with yogic-​based tools (breathing, meditation and asana or movement) that are specifically designed to meet the unique health needs of the client.

Yoga therapy is an integrative approach as it not only nourishes physical well-​being it also helps to create emotional balance.

Sessions include health history check-​in, yoga and meditation practice, and creation of a protocol specifically designed for you. She will also explain the health principles behind the sequences and why they can be beneficial.

Multiple sessions can build on each other by providing follow-​up check-​ins, modifications, and check-​ins about protocol. Handouts and extra resources provided if necessary. Some lifestyle or self-​care suggestions may be advised if appropriate.

Over the past four years, Maya has cultivated her teaching practice in both the private and community setting. Maya is passionate about creating more access to the practice of yoga. Yoga has certainly been transformative for her life and she feels blessed to be able to share this gift with others.

Maya is grateful to have been certified as a yoga teacher through Yoga Tree’s 200 Hour Teacher Training. She then continued her education with an advanced training in Yoga Therapy at Niroga Institute. Maya is excited about the potential of yoga as a holistic means for addressing chronic conditions and illnesses in particularly related to chronic pain and trauma. She works in private practice to address these needs with clients.

Overall, Maya’s classes/​sessions focus on creating an accessible and safe practice so people of all abilities, sizes, ages, races and genders will feel comfortable and motivated to learn the practice of yoga. Through a compassionate approach, she emphasizes body mechanics, mindfulness and the development of self-​awareness and intention.
