Westbrae Nursery

We actually stumbled upon this place after visiting the Berkeley Horticultural nursery and we bought most of our plants from this place! Staff is very friendly. They have a wide selection of succulents as well as indoor plants. I bought a lipstick mini plant and some variegated string of hearts succulents which are very hard to find so I bought one for myself and my mom.

I found it to be more expensive than other nurseries, and they also have a smaller
selection. However, it’s less crowded and still nice.

While they are not as cost efficeint as the «depot», their plants are far above the quality you’ll find at lower cost plant sellers. They consistently have beautiful plants and there is always an adequate amount of staff to help you find what you need or answer any questions. I’ve been a professional gardener for 14 years and while I do the bulk of my plant shopping at wholesalers, when I do need to buy retail, this is one of my favorite places to go. Parking is easy, the nursery is always fun to look through and the people have always been friendly. The plants I’ve purchased from here always perform very well, vs. buying from big box or drugstores where they haven’t been cared for beyond delivery and likely were not top quality plants to begin with. There’s a reason the higher priced retail nurseries like this charge more — you get what you pay for and it’s worth it!

I love this place. It’s a cozy and pleasant neighborhood nursery that still manages to have a large selection of healthy plants. The staff is very knowledgeable, patient, and helpful, and it’s easy to find someone to ask questions of. It’s on my walking route, so I wander through about once a week, and there’s always something new that catches my eye or gives me new ideas. Too many new ideas, but that’s a different topic.

Great selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff. I love browsing through the beautiful flowers up front before heading to the things that are harder for me to kill– succulents and veggies! They are great at helping me pick out things that will thrive in my somewhat foggy area of Berkeley (sorry, peppers and most tomatoes!)

I don´t like this nursery at all.
Unfortunately they were completely unfriendly and not helpful at all– Went there to show the leaves of my tomato plants, to ask if it was a fungus or sthg else.
The first guy said «it might be an illness» and asked the second one, who stood behind him, for his opinion. The latter on said «it might be the coldness during the night». So I asked, what do you think it is? I mean, if it was an illness I don´t want, that the other plants get ill as well! The 2^nd one (the rude person): «Well if you fear for the plants, just throw the others away».
Ok, I have 2 little kids at home — they would be sad, if I simply throw the plants away… as they helped me planting them. That´s why I answered «Well I don´t want to throw them away, if I don´t need do. So what do you think it is?». And the rude on answered «I think I already gave you my answer. What do you want from me?» And I «You work in a nursery — I thought you could help me as an expert.» Finally he was so kind to look into his computer… surprise, surprise… it was not the coldness, but a fungus. Thus he sold me a bottle of fungicide for 11 $ — he assured me it wouldn´t be toxic for my kids etc… but now I looked it up on the Internet — well it says the contrary.
Will never go there again.

What first attracted me here were the cute colorful pots in the window. I bought one and it was a perfect house for my plant (until I killed it with too much sun ~ opps).
The people who work here are lovely. And so is the space.
I just wished I had room for a huge garden so I could buy one of everything ;)

This summer we did a complete re-​landscaping of our front yard. We sheet mulched the entire yard and we’ve had to buy a large amount of plants. So we’ve visited a bunch of nurseries as a result and this is one of our favorites.
Two great things about this nursery are the selection and the how the plants are organized. I’ve found some very cool plants that I haven’t seen at other nurseries and the plants are easy to find; they’re separated into perennials, annuals, shaded plants, and so on.
The workers are also very friendly and helpful.

This was a fun nursery to browse through. There were some plants we haven’t seen before, very different. I wish now I wrote down the names.
Anyway, the selections are great and the plants are identified with markers letting you know if they are drought or deer resistant. Always very helpful here in the hills.
All the plants look very healthy and there are little garden pretties and statuary type things tucked here and there. It’s a lot of fun just to look around.
We found three different types of ground cover to help with our less watering efforts.
Today they had a pumpkin patch with lots of different sized pumpkins.
Here you will find: herbs, vegetables, ornamental and the ordinary. Indoor and outdoor. Trees, shrubs and again ground covers.
We kept saying «Wow!» and «Look at that!» as we toured the grounds.
This is a very clean, well organized and well cared for nursery.

It seems that when ever I go into this nursery to browse. I see something that would look good in my garden. The plants always look very healthy. The ones I have purchased have done well.
The garden art that is placed around the nursery is reasonably priced.
They also have a large selection of house plants.

Very helpful, knowledgeable. Typically when I visit the nursery, its just to browse; but when I do need some help they spend as much time as needed. They never seem to busy to answer questions or even joke around for a second.
As the caretaker for a preschool, I was looking for certain plant foods and other items that are safe to be used within a garden. Unfortunately, the fellow’s name slips me — anyways I spent nearly 45 minutes being taught whats just fine — passable — and not so great even for grown ups. I enjoyed the conversation. In the end, I feel that every time that I visit here, I am also learning — as this is a newer hobby of mine.
It even out of the way from my house and I still prefer this place compared to others. Ill be coming here for years to come.

One of the better selections of indoor plants that I’ve found in the East Bay. It’s not as large as Encinal Nursery but the quality of their plants is top-​notch. Unfortunately that’s reflected in the prices. Not that their plants aren’t worth it. I just worry about plunking down over $ 100 for a plant only to kill it in a month.

I have been a patron for over 5 years and highly recommend this nursery. Their plants are superior in every way and the service is excellent. I frequently email Jason requesting a specifc plant and they always respond promptly. Great selection of house plants, veggies, flowers and trees. I recommend them highly.

I can’t possibly tell you how wonderful this place is. The plants are the most gorgeous and healthy I have every seen. And everyone their so helpful its unbelievable.
A while ago, I sadly realized I could not afford to move to the forest, So, I decided to fill every possibly space I have with plants and bring the forest to me. I have filled my home and office floor to ceiling.
I could not have done it without their help. I had never owned a plant before and knew nothing! The staff there, especially Brad, has been so patient about giving me guidance. He helped me pick all the plant for their location, told me how to take care of them in caring detail. He played doctor whenever one needed treatment. Even made a house call once! And gave me so many countless tips. I have learned so much.
I can’t believe the difference all of these plants have made in my life with regard to my happiness. I could not have done it without them. Thank you so much Brad and everyone else at Westbrae Nursery!!!

I really love this place.
The people are great, the plants are vibrant and happy, and most of all, I love the selection. For such a cozy and smallish place, they have so many wonderful things (native plants, organic herbs and veggies, ornamentals, citrus and other fruit trees, etc). It’s rather uncanny, when you think about it. I feel like Berkeley Hort just kind of swallows me up, but Westbrae is just an easy, enjoyable, sweet place to be.
Just don’t go in thinking, «Oh, I’ll just look,» cuz let me tell you, it’s not going to happen. The plants seem to be whispering, «Take me home, take me home,» and I always do.

Five stars for happy, healthy ladybugs in pint containers kept cool and alive when I needed them one spring!
Great neighborhood nursery with a wide variety of plants and supplies to keep any gardener or urban farmer happy and busy all year round!

We’ve checked out several local nurseries, especially ones with coupons in the Chinook book. Several are very pretty — in a beautifully landscaped location but the prices are expensive, the staff is kind of surly or nonchalant, or perhaps the plants die soon after you get them home.
I am thrilled to discover Westbrae. I never would have happened upon it as it’s located in an area of Berkeley I’ve never been. But now I’ll be intentional about my visits.
We bought a number of succulents and a blueberry plant. We wanted two blueberries but they were out so they took our number and called when it arrived. I love that.
Everyone was so nice and mellow… I suppose they like working there.

Wonderful nursery! The nursery is on the small size, but you will notice that the care and condition of the plants are much better than other places. The employee’s are über friendly and helpful. I bought an aloe vera plant and pot and the employee re potted my plant for me. How’s that for awesome customer service?!
The prices (at least for what I wanted) were reasonable. And, the plants are healthy. This statement might seem like a small thing, but it isn’t. I went to several places to purchase aloe vera plants and to my surprise I found them to be in poor condition. The worse a.v. plants were at Orchard Supply and Home Depot.
I love browsing here. The nursery is calm and has great light. I will definitely come back to Westbrae Nursery.

My favorite place to get planties friends. Within walking distance of my house, this place is perfect — I just wish they had later weekday hours!
Very helpful, friendly, down-​to-​earth employees, and a great selection of starters in the spring for your good-​eatin’ gardening needs. I love their succulents, carnivorous plants, and other sweet rarities.
