Business Owner

After four years teaching in the Oakland public schools, Ethan is launching Stark Studio in order to empower Bay Area musicians to fulfill their musical potential.

Ethan spends his days sculpting music in his studio, teaching that craft, playing with local band Seven Factorial, and running a music collective at Oakland Technical High School.

Taking music lessons with Ethan has been a pleasure. He has enthusiasm, is completely non-​intimidating, and knows his stuff. He’s been super flexible and responsive to my personal needs, even choosing songs to teach me that have lyrics that I like! When my instinct is to feel silly and unskilled, he points out something I don’t even realize I’m doing right. Basically, he’s an outstanding teacher. And he started me right away on specific songs instead of generic skills that might have left me feeling less productive. Exactly the patience a person would want when they start out, along with the knowledge and skill to still be relevant after you get going and knowing more. I started with Ethan over a year ago, btw.

Ethan is uncommonly patient and kind. He has a great way of offering guidance while also making it all about the artist’s vision. When I brought my song to him, I was impressed by how quickly he found the chords and melody and how easily the arrangement came together. The whole time, he remained flexible and supportive in helping me dial in on the tone and feeling I wanted the song to convey.

Ethan is truly a master in the studio. He is everything a musician could ask for in a studio technician and musical collaborator. Beyond having access to an incredibly diverse set of sounds, Ethan has a warm and patient demeanor that makes for a truly smooth and enjoyable recording experience. I’ve seen him work with musicians at a variety of different levels, and he is always able to meet folks where they’re at, helping them get the best out of their sound.
I’ve been truly impressed with the tracks we’ve been able to lay down together, and I know I couldn’t have gotten this sort of sound without Ethan’s expertise. No matter what level you’re at, if you’re keen to get recording in the Bay Area, Ethan is the guy to go to!

Ethan is amazing! He is highly skilled in music recording, he is patient and helpful, and creates an environment where you feel free to play without judgement! I don’t have much experience recording music, and Ethan instantly helped me feel calm and at ease.
I also had a lesson with Ethan learning to make electronic music. He is a fun, playful, and patient teacher.
I would highly recommend the Stark Institute of Music Production!

Woah! Last Tuesday I spent three hours recording a song with Ethan at the dials. He’s something else; a beast of knowledge, kind direction and unequivocal support. And humor! The space he creates makes music so fun. When I had doubts, he knew just what to say to alleviate my fears and gently position me into my more creative self. What a treat!
All this, and he’s got the technical stuff down too. He’s well versed with his equipment, knowing just what to tweak in order to achieve the sounds I wanted, something especially difficult for me (a drummer!). I was vert impressed.
Thanks Ethan, I’ll definitely be coming back for more!

I had an awesome recording experience with Ethan! He’s great to work with in exchanging ideas of how to improve a song, provides great recording skills and is in a band himself, so he has good perspective. He’s very patient and understanding of what vibe you’re going for in your music to make sure the best sound is produced rather than just rushing you through to finish. I’ve definitely been suggesting him to other friends looking to record their music!

I’ve always been uncomfortable listening to my own recorded voice, a real problem for a singer. But Ethan at the Stark Institute unlocked something in me that made it not only worth it, but an absolute blast. He pushed me to challenge myself, but did it while creating such a safe space I honestly couldn’t believe what I was capable of. Thank you Ethan!!!

Ethan of Stark Institute was an aide in my classroom for years. He is an amazing educator to both kids and adults and is so passionate about sharing the joy of music. As someone who personally knows the «Stark» who heads the Stark Institute of Music, I can honestly say that this is one passionate dude who will stop at nothing short of perfection when it comes to the music he works on. He is also one of the friendliest, most helpful, easy-​going fellows to ever grace this good earth.
