La Quinta Inn Berkeley

I was in a bit of a pickle and had the book a room last minute while visiting SF area. This hotel was the most affordable for the Berkeley area. The front desk worker was very kind and quick about booking a room for me, as well as answering my questions. The room was clean, the heater warmed the room quickly, water pressure in the shower was good.
I believe the elevator was being worked on, but that was fine for me, as I didn’t have any luggage, so 3^rd floor wasn’t inconvenient. It was a quiet neighborhood, with the only loud noise coming from the bathroom light/​fan. Breakfast was very minimal, but sufficient.

Stayed two nights over xmas/​new year’s. Arranged our reservations via online; when we arrived, the manager noticed that we had four adults and the room wasn’t quite size-​suitable for all of us, so he gave us two connecting rooms for the same price as the single room. Sweet!
Place was going through some remodeling, elevator was being worked on, but we were on the first floor so we didn’t have to deal with stairs.
Morning breakfast was perfect and catered to all of our food favorites.
The location isn’t the best, but it’s safe enough. Plus, there was a 99 Cent Store and 7 – 11 within close walking distance, if you like that sort of thing.
Would we stay there again? My wife said sure, so if it passes muster with her, i’m fine with it as well.

We stayed here for two nights when traveling with our two dogs. We stayed in a recently remodeled room on the first floor. It was nice and clean as well as comfortable. The breakfast was good as well. We would stay here again.

Everyone who gave it a one star were spot on. If I did not have to stay for work I would have left in a heartbeat.
1. The place smelled like diarrhea or dead rodent, give or take. They covered it up, eventually, with a nasty lemon glade spray bomb that made you sick. This is why they keep the front door open.
2. I had to change rooms next to one that was empty because the walls are so thin, you can hear the person in the next room going to the bathroom as though they are doing it right in front of you.
3. It took 3 minutes to get to the 2^nd floor on the elevator, which smells like paint and mold.
4. The refrigerator made a creaking noise to the point I had to unplug it.
5. The «new» bathroom toilet did not flush and when they «fixed» it, it overflowed when you flushed it.
6. The worst was the breakfast, the coffee I spat up, it tasted like burnt flavored water. The plain bagels were yellow and the apples were all molded.
7. The neighborhood looks very sketchy.
8. I was nauseous and had a headache the entire time because the hallways smelled like poop, mildew and old paint.
9. The «workout center» is NOT a workout center, it is 2 treadmills thrown into a small closet (just see for yourselves)
I have stayed in hostels, in motels, camp grounds, in nice hotels, in crappy hotels around the world but THIS hotel was THE nastiest, worst and seriously probably the most unsafe health wise hotel I have EVER seen. They put you in danger with the mold, the fumes, it should seriously be shut down.

Staff was warm, friendly and helpful.
We got a really great deal (used points) so I shouldn’t complain but our room smelled like cigarettes and there was a pee stain on the pull out sofa.
Definitely not the fanciest or cleanest hotel we’ve stayed in.
Needs an overhaul!

My mom and I stayed here for one night while we were in Berkeley. I’ll start with the positives… The front desk was very helpful and friendly and the lobby looked great. They also have a washer and dryer that you can use which was helpful since we had to do laundry. We didn’t use the pool or the gym because we were there for such a short amount of time but it’s nice that they had that. They’re renovating the bathrooms in all of the rooms and I thought the new shower was really nice.
Now for the bad… Seeing as we only had to stay in the area for one night, we didn’t do our research, and the neighborhood seemed really sketchy. We were really nervous coming back late at night after a business dinner. When we checked in, one housekeeper was in the hall all four times we walked back-​and-​forth to the laundry room complaining about how hot it was and about her job loudly to herself which made us feel a little uncomfortable. Once we got in our room we saw that our curtain had a huge tear in it. We also were walking around and my feet were really itchy it felt like there was something biting me when I walked on the carpet which I think may have been from whatever they use to clean the floors but I ended up wearing shoes in the room to avoid whatever was bothering my feet.
Overall if you’re looking for a cheap place to stay for one night it’s fine however I wouldn’t stay here again.

The hotel room was fairly lackluster, we didn’t have a trash can in our bathroom, and the bed sheets and blanket had stains on them. When we asked for new sheets the staff took several minutes.

Eh… ok 2 stay 1 nite… if u must. but check out is at 12 pm… n already 2x the maids have just barged in 2 clean the room. .n all this after I told them we were checking out at 12 pm… seriously annoying .but rooms do have a cute lil balcony which is nice. n beds r comfy. not the newest or cleanest but for 1 nite… def do ’ able..

My parents-​in-​laws, husband, and I stayed at this Inn during Father’s Day Weekend. This place is a solid two and a half to three stars. Here are my reasons:
The Good:
The rooms are newly renovated with neutral colors, fixtures, and appliances.
The place is conveniently located near Cal.
The waffles, fresh fruit, and potatoes were pretty good.
The front desk lady gave my in-​laws and I water and travel size snacks.
They had a refrigerator, microwave, and cable television with HBO inside the rooms.
The Bad:
The small elevator makes a creaking loud noise when people want to go up or down a floor.
The hallway in the third level smells in between fresh paint and mold. It gave me a headache when I first step foot outside the elevator.
The beds are way too firm. It felt like I was sleeping on concrete floor.
The bathroom sink is a bit too small.
The complementary breakfast was mediocre. The breakfast sausage links tasted like Jimmy Dean Sausages – frozen and overly processed. Do not expect anything fancy. They don’t have fresh pastries. It was all pre-​packaged and processed pastries.
In my opinion, the neighborhood looked sketchy.
Personally, I would not come here again. I guess you come what you pay for. .. a mediocrity hotel trying to look like they upgraded their services.

It is great they allow dogs. But when you call the front desk and want them to come and bring me towels while I’m here and they don’t That pisses me off. All I want is new towels. Not to have the room cleaned just TOWLES. NOW. NOT IN AN HOUR. I have stuff todo. Heaven for bid I have them do things out of order.

This put all these reviews into one context that explains how they all can be true, one must understand the Berkeley area.
Anyone who gave 3+ probably understands the area and is giving them credit for being less awful than some of the Mom and Pop Motels… And being very competitive on rate. These people also understand that this is an old facility that has been retrofitted to meet current codes.
Those who rated it less, actually aren’t being unfair… But aren’t giving them (La Quinta Inn Berkeley) credit for the positives mentioned above. The TV is a nice Samsung flat panel, but the lamination has fallen off the foot board of the entertainment center.
If you are looking for a place to vacation, this isn’t your place, if you are looking for a cost effective place to crash and have a nice continental breakfast it is. The bed linens are new and very nicely made.
Bathroom… Super dated and showing age from liberal use of caulk over the years. But all that aside still clean.
I’m trying to paint an accurate picture of the facility. So if you are even mildly finicky… Move on to your next choice. If the advantages of cost and proximity are attractive, or you are a regular camper… Book it right away.
It should be also noted that the staff is truly amazing and super friendly! Way to go front desk!

This la quinta is a solid 4. I am really shocked at low reviews. Any place under 150 in «the city» would have hookers and drug users outside. This is a steal especially if you love berekley. Was 100% booked night we were here so book early

In 2011 I came here with friends… One friend had checked in first and had already started sleeping. We got to our room at around 1 am… When he opened the door, he was covered in BED BUGS!!! NUFF SAID

1. Do not park on the street. My car was broken into after coming back late and being unaware of the parking in the rear of the hotel (thanks staff).
2. This place definitely smells like mold.
3. Room was not clean. I discovered stains on the bedspread on the last day I stayed there that must have been on there all week!
4. I wouldn’t touch the breakfast as the place grossed me out too much, but the coffee was nasty.
If I hadn’t been forced to stay here for work I would have sought other accommodations immediately! Avoid at all costs!

It’s rare that I give one star for anything, but this place doesn’t deserve to be open for business considering the amount they charge, as if they were a routine La Quinta. They are not. The place is filthy and poorly maintained. The «design» (and I use that term loosely) is simply weird. Like something out of Blue Velvet. The actual room cleanliness was not as bad as the public spaces, but it was creepy knowing that they neglect the property so badly.
Biggest complaint: No WIFI. I should clarify that in the evening there was a weak WIFI connection. But in the morning, when I had important business to transact, there was no WIFI at all. Neither of two ipads, an iPhone nor a laptop showed a WIFI signal at all. We called a number of times and even spoke with the woman at the front desk. She said the router had to be reset, but she couldn’t leave the front desk because she was the only person there. She said that she would inform the custodian, but WIFI never appeared. When we asked to speak to the manager, she said that the manager wasn’t in, even though there was a sign on the wall behind the counter with a name under «Manger On Duty.» We left for a Starbucks so we could get a much needed WIFI connection.
2^nd complaint: Breakfast was the worst La Quinta breakfast we’ve encountered. Aside from a lack of options, their idea of breakfast was warm hard-​boiled eggs and sausage that had a weird flavor. I asked the lady in the dining room for yogurt, which she obtained from some back room. Fortunately they had it, but I’m not sure why they were hiding it. Another, younger, woman stood by, doing absolutely nothing. I don’t blame her personally. She obviously is lacking in training/​management. With food in hand we tried to find a clean table, but there was not one among about a dozen tables that was clean. And I’m not talking squeaky clean. These tables were all smeared … disgusting. We ate in the lobby, on our laps. My wife had oatmeal with nothing to accompany it because they had nothing to offer. i.e. fruit or dried berries.
In the parking lot, old mattresses were stacked against the heavy metal security gate. Not sure which was propping up which, but it looked like a ghetto back there. A large part of the parking lot appeared to be rented to a third party for storage of their trucks.
My wife eventually spoke with the manager. She requested a refund, but the manager would only offer a 20% discount and a coupon for a free night at the same La Quinta. That was 4 days ago and there is still no adjustment to our credit card account.

Front desk smells like a dead rodent lives in the wall, thus is why they leave the front door in the open position as often as possible. The hotel uses bleach to hide the mold smell in the remainder of the facility. My tv/​fridge cabinet has mold growing in the cheap formica cabinet. Housekeeping doesn’t respect the do not disturb as they have entered multiple times after my request not to. A couple of the front desk people are nice but just as many are rude. I average over 140 days a year in hotel and have never been this disappointed.
Adding to insult, the housekeeping person took my quarters. I’m on the road for 18 days and have been collecting quarters for laundry. While they were kind enough to not steal my electronics, they assumed I wouldn’t notice the quarters. I would give this place a 0 if Unilocal gave the option.

Here’s what I wrote to La Quinta:
«We’ve stayed here 4 or 5 times over the years (and at other properties) and once after renovation, which isn’t that long ago. The property is now in disgusting condition and it’s surprising that it still bears the La Quinta name. And as we travel (responsibly) with our dogs the La Quinta name is a name we used to trust.
It’s. Just. Filty. It’s clearly changed hands and no one cares. Even the front desk was filthy with a filthy carpet, trash over-​flowing and used sugar packets, etc littering the rug,
The room 203 was just perfunctorily cleaned, not a professional job. At all. Makes you not want to touch anything. The carpet is dirty enough to make you never want to take off your shoes. As there are not enough power outlets we need the spike strips and got the chance to see behind furniture and it was just filthy. Awful. The toilet over-​flowed. The shower backed up to my shins so I was standing in dirty water and my partner didn’t even try to take one, which was fine as the towels were of such low quality and don’t even get me started on the bed pillows: 5 sad small squares. 5 for two people…
So disappointing. Such a bad reflection on you. And another thing: The hall carpets hadn’t been cleaned forever and there were even dog pee spots and the elevator was just scary. Even the luggage trolley was filthy and the staff runs around giving guests the stink eye.
Just hated our stay. Absolutely shocked that it could get so bad so very quickly. We would have stayed several more days but we found a nice clean Airbnb…»

Stayed overnight. While the hotel needs some remodeling and it’s probably past due, my bigger concern is that my room is clean and that everything is in working order. My room was perfect, not even a dusty TV. The TV, microwave, and frig were newer and in working order. This location also just purchased tons of new mattresses.
The breakfast this morning was great. I’ve had different versions of continental breakfast at La Quintas as this one might have the best. In addition to the typical waffles, cereal, and fruit, this location also had bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy, and a bunch more. The coffee machine is a nice touch too.
Dislikes — The parking. Unless you ask, they don’t tell you about the back parking lot, which would have been helpful, as the front parking lot is very small. That’s about it for me!

Hotel in guter Lage. Das Parken vor dem Hotel ist kostenlos. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das Zimmer war sauber und das Housekeeping ist sehr schnell und sorgfältig. Jederzeit wieder!

Dated but serves it’s purpose. We stayed here for two nights while apartment hunting around Berkeley. Conveniently located and close to UC Berkeley and good food areas. The pool looks nice enough but it was dated as well. I didn’t have any problems with staff. The beds were comfy and clean. I just wished the bathroom area was the same. There are dirty spots/​cracks on the tub floor that really creeped me out. We were located near the lobby, which was awesome because there’s a bathroom located near there. Wifi was faster than other hotels I’ve been to. Free breakfast is always a plus… your typical fair of plastic like DIY waffles, bagels, hard boiled eggs, sausage, ect. I think there’s a good selection of a variety of different things you can have for breakfast.
FYI– don’t put your room key near your cell phone or credit cards. I accidentally deactivated my room key twice :(hahaha

Weeeelp Unilocalers, I have had better and wont be back.
La Quinta usually reserves a place in my heart as a budget friendly do-​able location. This one, falls slightly short of that mark.
We looked for a place that was accommodating while not busting the budget while in for a weekend football game. It provided a place to sleep, literally nothing more.
We walked in, waited at the service desk for about 5 minutes waiting– nothing other that wet floors from the pool and mildew in the air. Finally we managed to wave someone down and get into our room…
The elevator was barely in proper function– the carpets weren’t overly clean. It was average at best.
The room was ok. It was clean (enough) and I slept there… I am not going to be overly snobby about it. Once inside it was ok.
Overall though, this place left bit and then some to be desired. The location is not that great (didn’t seem as safe as other area hotels), it smelled of old smoke and mildew, and service was just enough to get the job done.
