Went all the way from Concord never again… Wanted a 4 way but no chicken extra link they said no substitution. Really… And the chicken was some little ass leg that’s it. Huge pieces of fat on brisket and ribs… Still looking for good BBQ…

brisket– decent, ribs– dry, chicken– ok, hot sauce, good! price– high, minimal seating inside, outside seating in a sketchy neighborhood… disappointed…

This place has always been good to me. I’m a big fan of this place. The size of the meals are enormous. I always get the two way. The deserts are great also.

I’ve been wanting to try this place because it smells so good from the outside. I got their rib«sandwich» tonight which was pork ribs, two slices of a cheap bread(packaged in plastic), and potato salad. Disappointing. Sauce was good, but the ribs were dry and I wouldn’t give the potato salad to my dog. Worst of all, the cooks in the kitchen and the woman taking our order were weirdly hostile. The woman taking my order heard me incorrectly but swiped my card anyway. Rather than hold up the line, I went with it but she and the rest of the staff were very patronizing. Pass on this nasty establishment and get some real food from nicer people.

If I could give a zero I would. This place has always been hit or miss, but today was down right disrespectful. They only still in business because of their reputation. Links ok and chicken too. But today they sold me the ribs that cooked with the wood in the smoker. Charred BLACK, hard and barely any meat. Not just the top layer was hard all the way through. Totally disgusted. Try to support a black business that’s been around for decades and you get a below subpar meal. I get keeping costs down by not throwing things out. But I just paid $ 13 for something that should have been thrown out because it’s burnt. Smh… shame on you

This food is so good that I live in Sacramento and will wake up real early to take a drive to Berkeley just to get it! I get the 2 way, chicken and mild links w/mild sauce, potato salad and baked beans. The brisket is really good too! Yes it’s worth the spontaneous trip from Sac to Berkeley! Why does bread go w/BBQ? I have no idea but it works!

Really solid BBQ on San Pablo. I heard from my co-workers that this place is an institution, so after some cold ones, we rolled up here for the postgame dinner. They have a TV overhead, which was showing the Warriors dusting some new opponent, naturally. While the cost hovers around $ 20 minimum for most items and combos(they do take that plastic though), you get a huge portion. For a tick under that $ 20 spot, I got a decent amount of brisket(I went with the combo), beans, two pieces of bread, and my sides were potato salad and mac and cheese. This is a really small establishment, with a small counter inside and then outdoor seating. I went with the medium sauce, and was happy I did. It had just the right amount of kick. I heard the hot was just that, and I wasn’t looking to burn off all my tastebuds that night(though I have no problem with spicy food). If I’m ever in the area again, I’ll be sure to stop by this place and give it another run.

Good BBQ. Mac and Cheese(not usually my fav) was tasty. Need more sides. And bring some of that southern soul connection to Berkeley. The people there were super nice. And I didn’t leave anything on the bone. I would like to do this on a warm night so I could sit outside.

I came in to order 2 sandwiches for my husband & myself as it was his Birthday. I hadn’t been to this particular establishment in about 15 yrs & I wasn’t chancing it on buying Dinner portions… I ordered a Link & Rib sandwich. I was told that I was Lucky because the links were fresh. They were right! But they forgot to say that the Ribs will be hacked up & Tough/Chewy drizzled in watery BBQ Sauce! Disgusting Potato Salad! Now I know I Won’t Ever be back. To stay in Business you need to represent your product & Cook with Love! When you don’t do that you have a Crappy Business that will be closed down before you Smoke your next Brisket! Very Unhappy Still after 15 yrs!

They only take cash! My order wasn’t properly packed. BBQ sauce spill all over the plastic bag, thankfully bag didn’t leak! Otherwise I would have bbq sauce spill… all over the rug of my brand new car. She gave me two slices of bread… one of them was the Butt! Yes you read correctly. Lol. what restaurant gives you the butt of the loaf? Chicken was hard and bbq sauce watery, needless to say $ 10 lunch. What a dissapointment! Totally not wort it!

Got the brisket and the ribs lunch set. Honestly I only ate the meat in the set, threw away the white bread and the potato salad. The environment is a bit weird/sketchy too. The bbq sauce was not bad! I felt like the meat was a tad dry and there were too many burnt bits so it’s not the best BBQ I’ve ever had but definitely not bad for this area. It is a bit pricy though in my opinion for just meat(since that’s all I ate). Not sure if I’ll be back! Maybe I’ll try some other bbq places around here first.

Went in here for the brisket sandwich today. What a loser! $ 10.40 got me some tough, chewy meat, most of which went into the garbage can. Not to be forgotten were the two pieces of squishy Wonder bread and the mediocre potato salad. I don’t mind paying good money, but I expect a good product. I will definitely not repeat. I can’t help but wonder how a place like this stays in business.

Yummy yum yum! I’m on a BBQ sauce high right now. Circumstances led us here today in lieu of a Labor Day BBQ and I’m so glad we came in! The place was packed and i had been here before in my college days, but I was craving some ribs. I ordered the pork rib dinner and honestly wish we had split the order– very generous portions of food. Guess I’ll have lunch for tomorrow. The dinner comes with ribs, potato salad, and baked beans for $ 15. The owner was there handing out a jar of sauce to everyone who came in as a token of her appreciation. They also sell the sauce at Whole foods if you need your fix. We’ll definitely be back for the cobbler.

Oh E&J, what has happened to you after all these years? I’m not sure if it’s this way now or if it was because it was near closing time. This place has gone downhill since the last time I was here(~5 years ago). The place/décor has not changed which means it’s a cool dive. But, the food? OMG, I was so disappointed. Let me run it down for you: 1) Brisket — Cut thin and long but was tough as leather. I thought it used to be cut/chopped rough where the pieces weren’t all the same shape, etc. Regardless, I remember it being so tender and juicy. What happened? Did the recipe or quality of meat change? Where’s the smoke ring? It cost $ 21 for a two-way. That’s a lot of money! 2) Chicken — A bit tough and missing any smoke flavor. Tip: start providing knives as it’s too hard to eat the chicken and brisket without one. 3) Green Beans — Lacked any flavor 4) Mild Sauce — Basically colored water… I should have asked for their medium sauce. 5) Mac n Cheese — ok 6) Beans — ok The only«saving grace» was their beef link sausage. They tasted just as they did years ago. Mind you these are not hot links! But the flavor and texture were spot on! Oh, they do not accept credit cards. But, they have an ATM there so you can get cash after having to pay a fee. Argh! I am so glad Emergency BBQ is close to me. The only issue is I have to wait until its either Wednesday or Saturday to get brisket! Oh, Armadillo Willy’s brisket is good and better than E&J.

Back in the days this was the spot to hit after work or just because you wanted you bbq. I was quite shock at how bad the quality of was food, it was bad. I order ribs and links combo tow of them with potato salad as the side dish, one peach cobbler and german chocolate cake. It comes to 55.00, buck, wow this should be heck of good. I text my husband, I I got us BBQ for dinner, my text back was yummy! lol, I get home and I should took a picture of the food, I had about 4 ribs and a whole link, with sauce, meat was tender and season well. But the potato sales was horrible, dry NO seasoning at all, with the skin left on still. I deal with that, but dry as heck. We both threw that out to the dog. The dessert cake was dry, my husband said it had to be sitting out for a few days, for it was so dry. My peach cobbler has no juice and but lots of crust, bottom-line we will not go back.

I truly enjoyed the food(barbecue ribs, chicken, mac & cheese, and greens). It was delicious. I also have to say that you get a lot of food for your dollar. I had enough for seconds! I can’t stand going to restaurants and simply paying for the presentation of the food. After I leave I’m still hungry. THANKFULLYTHATWASNOTTHECASEATEVERETT&JONES! The only reason I can’t give 5stars is the amount of time we had to wait on our food.

I came here after a long day of eating, so my appetite wasn’t at its highest. I grabbed a beef brisket dinner which was on the higher end(19 dollars for meat and two sides). This place is take out only so we headed home to go eat. The beef brisket was quite tender and the sauce was very yummy. However, the my two sides, Mac and Cheese and green beans were just okay. I wasn’t impressed with either. I also tried the ribs and the chicken which were both good too. The ribs was a huge portion! I was told before coming here that this was the best bbq my friend had ever had, so I cam in with high expectations. Although the food was not bad, it was not the best bbq I have ever had. For the price and the portions, it might be worth it to share an entrée.

I’ll tell you what, this place smells fantastic. I didn’t know anything about this place, but I followed my nose to find it. I got the beef brisket and was very happy with it. My mother got the chicken and she was happy with it as well. The second time I came I got the Beef links and I wasn’t really a fan, the links themselves were basically flavorless and the only saving grace was the sauce. As the other reviews say, the staff is pretty dry. They move slowly and are a little terse, but don’t come off as rude.

Service here felt like I was on another planet. As I walked in, nobody was at the front counter, but there was a man chopping meat on the back counter just behind it. He motioned me over to the register, which wasn’t visible from the door, and asked what I wanted. I said a brisket sandwich. He seemed to nod OK, then went back to chopping meat. Wait a while. Then, without having talked to anybody else in the interim, he came up to the register and said they were out of brisket. OK, I said, I’ll have the rib sandwich. He said OK, then went back to chopping meat. I figured that eventually two things ought to happen:(1) I would give him money;(2) He would bring me food. But it wasn’t clear when these things might happen, or in which order. Eventually they did. My so-called sandwich was a small order of ribs, a scoop of potato salad, and a couple pieces of bread inside one of those plastic clamshells so fiercely sealed I literally cut my finger open — blood and everything — while trying to unfasten it. THe ribs were meaty, but very chewy — the opposite of tender, which is what bbq is supposed to be — and rather undercooked. The sauce, tasty but watery. This is not the great bbq you’re looking for.
