Who will you celebrate and remember that has passed on recently? At this time of year, when the veil between the living and dead is thought to be at its most diaphanous, you are invited to gather for the seventh annual Dìa de los Muertos Celebration on Shattuck Ave. between Rose and Vine Streets in Berkeley on Monday, November 2, 5−9PM.
The event hosts food booths and trucks, a wine and beer garden, free skeletal face painting, and art and craft vendors. DIY art projects for kids and adults include ceramic, wooden, or sugar skull painting, calaca bead stringing, pet altar creations, and more. Musicians make the evening magical. Costumes and traditional Dìa de los Muertos papier maché giant heads are encouraged.
In addition to several altars created by local artists, bring photos or stories of loved ones, candles, breads, or flowers to add to the community ofrenda. Cuauhtli Mitotiani Mexica dancers bless the altar with drums and dancing then lead a sidewalk candle light procession through the district following along a path of strewn marigold petals.
The Dia de los Muertos Celebration is sponsored by the North Shattuck Association, Berkeley Art Center, Andronico’s Markets, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Singha Beer, Vintage Berkeley, BETV, East Bay Loop, East Bay Express and Yelp. The Gourmet Ghetto is six blocks north of Downtown Berkeley BART. Free admission.
