History

Established in 1995.

David started out engraving while he was running the metal shop for National Resophonic Guitars in San Luis Obispo. Owner’s Don Young and MacGregor Gaines were having trouble finding someone who could engrave the old traditional designs on the metal body guitars. David bought 2 engraving chisels from a friend and began experimenting in his free time at home. Learning mostly from books he was soon able to quit his job at National and begin working full-time engraving musical instruments. For the next 10 years he engraved metal guitars, banjos, snare drum shells, electric guitar parts (for the Fender Custom Shop) and worked on many fine pieces including engraving for Larry Robinson on the Millionth Martin for Martin Guitars. Throughout this period David studied goldsmithing, stone setting and jewelry engraving. Eventually he transitioned out of musical instrument work and now works engraving and producing beautiful handmade jewelry in his little studio in Berkeley.

Meet the Business Owner

David G.

Business Owner

I feel pretty lucky every day that I get to come into my studio and work making and engraving beautiful artifacts that are treasured by their owners. I imagine that my occupation is a little like the path of a Zen monk. Every day I make an effort to get closer to the job at hand. Each stroke of my chisel is an exercise in relaxed concentration. I enjoy a very personal and intimate relationship with my materials and I am lucky that this seems to attract a clientele who are appreciative of the results and sometimes the approach as well. My goal is, and has always been, to create things that set themselves apart from the world of the ordinary.
